welcome to the faculty of agricultural life and environmental Sciences course registration 101 Workshop I presenting to you today from Edmonton Alberta home to the University of Alberta the University of Alberta acknowledges that we are located on 3y6 territory and respects the histories languages and cultures of First Nations mate Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada whose presence continues to enrich our Vibrant Community today in this video we’re going to go through the structure of your degree so understanding your degree tips and tricks uh specifically for your faculty of ALS programs and then we’re going through go through a quick demonstration on how to read your program checksheet and U OFA calendar as well as a course registration on my schedule Builder all of the information discussed today is available on the AL self-guided module which can be accessed through the [Music] uab.edu will need to accept your offer of Admissions and pay your non-refundable tuition deposit before you are able to access the my schedule Builder and enroll for your classes this may take about five business days to process on the back end so make sure to submit your tuition deposit as soon as you can the course enrollment date has passed on April 4th so once you have access to the my schedule Builder you are able to register for both fall 2024 and winter 2025 terms now let’s head into understanding your degree first of B some terminologies to help you throughout your course scheduling Journey so semester or terms the university is divided into four terms fall winter spring and summer fall is from September to December and winter is from January to April whereas the spring and summer are two month long terms so they’re May to June and summer in July to August so other terms that you should be aware of are majors and minors majors are primary area of study in your degree program this applies to Major majority of our ALS programs like Environmental Conservation Sciences where there’s six Majors to choose from there are some programs that does not list Majors uh like forestry or fashion business management uh this is because that is your primary focus of area of study already so there are no other Majors to choose now minors are only applicable to nutrition food science general program uh this is a secondary area of studying your degree program so once you choose a minor um the both major and minor will be listed on your parchment upon graduation Now units is a terminology that you’ll come across very often and it indicates the units for course weight uh it used to be called credits but now the U OFA have transitioned into using the term units in order to complete a full degree so a full bachelor’s degree you need to complete 120 units now going back to the terms if you were to take one course in the fall term you’ll be taking three units during that term and the maximum course load or maximum unit load that you can take in the fall is either five courses which indicates 15 units uh because each course is three units and we do if you do quick math that would come to 15 units and it will be the same case for winter so one course is three units and maximum course load would be five courses or 15 units we talked about how spring and summer are TW month long terms so each course taken in spring or summer are still three units uh but the maximum course load is a lot smaller it’s two courses or maximum of six units so this is because when you’re taking a course in the spring because it is condensed to two months you’re taking a four-month long course in two months that means longer lectures longer labs and longer seminar um so that’s something that you should consider when you’re taking spring and summer term courses so let’s move on to the four-year plan so when the universal Alberta designs their degrees undergraduate degrees of 120 units uh they divide it into four years so each year uh they would generally design it so that students can take five courses in the fall five courses in the winter then that would come to 10 courses per year uh which is equate to 30 units so year one 30 units um in the second year 30 units third and fourth Etc so that will come to fouryear plan but the thing that you need to be aware of is that scheduling in the university is very flexible specifically in the faculty of ALS so you don’t have to exactly follow a 4year plan uh you can do A Five-Year Plan and the faculty of vs actually uh recommends this route so in the year one instead of taking five courses uh in the fall and five courses in the winter uh it will be recommended to take four courses in the fall and four courses in the winter this would extend your degree by a year however uh by extending your degree by a year you are able to experience the university life a little bit longer so you can take advantage of volunteering uh studying abroad of student clubs uh any opportunities internships uh where you can really strengthen your resume before you graduate to uh pursue your career path now here’s some more terminologies uh these are very important so core courses core courses are courses that provides foundations of your degree and these are courses that you need to take there’s no other option whereas the electives are courses that provides a bit of flexibility in your program so there are two types of electives there’s free elective and approved program elective free elective you can take any courses from any faculty as long as you meet their restrictions some courses might be restricted to their own faculty students like engineering faculty you won’t be able to take engineering courses unless you’re an engineering students um there are some courses with certain prerequisites so you have to make sure that you meet those prerequisites and co-requisites before you can register for those courses I’ll talk about those terminologies in a little bit and then there’s the approved program elective or also called AP uh the AP is a specific list of electives that the faculty has chosen for you and you have to choose from that list each als’s program and each major has different list of AP so you have to make sure you view that list under your program and under your major and there is a limit on the number of courses that you can take at each level when I say each level it’s either 100 level 200 level 300 or 400 uh courses that starts with a one or two three or four so it this will be indicated on your program check sheeet or the U OFA calendar uh as to how many of each level that you can take so it just means that you can’t take all 100 and 200 level courses you have to take some 300 and 400 level courses as well the AP list can be accessed through uab.edu and co-requisite now prerequisite is a preliminary requirement that needs to be met prior to taking a course means that this course needs to be completed before you can take the next level course uh this would be an example like chem 101 and 102 chem 102 has a prerequisite of chem 101 it means that you need to complete chem 101 before you can take chem 102 now co-requisite is a requirement that you can meet prior or at the same time as taking that course so for instance Renard 215 is it has a co-requisite of renar 110 uh it means that you can take renar 110 either prior in the previous term or at the same time as renar 2115 now let’s move into Al scheduling tips now in order to effectively build your schedule you need to learn about priorities priorities are very important in helping you choose what courses to choose in your first year second year and Etc your priority courses you should consider our als’s courses and any courses that are prerequisite or co-requisite courses als’s courses are courses that are off through the faculty of ALS like nffs heal renar AR all those all these courses faculty of ALS is a smaller faculty there’s only about 1,500 students in the faculty so it means that there are lesser courses offered and lesser seats offered in these courses so some courses are offered once a year some courses are offered in certain terms and some courses are even offered once every two years so you want to get these courses done as soon as you can the pre prerequisites and co-requisites are courses that are required before you can take senior level courses so as I mentioned earlier chem 101 is required before you take chem 102 and even chem 261 this is the same case for Bio 107 bio 108 and bio 208 uh that are required for some senior ALS courses so you want to get these on as soon as you can so you can move through your sequencing of your courses the second priority that you should consider are other core courses what does that mean these are coures that are required for your degree but it’s not specifically a prerequisite or co-requisites to anything so prime example is English English courses even though they are recommended for you to take during your first year it’s not required for you to take it in first year English is one of those courses that you will notice that it is all full um because almost entire first year students need to take it but University Alberta knows that so it is offered every term so that you are able to complete this requirement as soon as you can so there are lots of options and you are able to take this course maybe in second year or even in third year now you have chosen your ALS courses your prerequisites and co-requisites and other core courses and there’s still a little bit of Gap in your schedule this is a good time to use your electives or approve program electives uh this way you can still uh have a full course load of four or five courses per term and uh be able to meet your requirements towards your program now here’s some tips to keep in mind be aware of the registration restrictions of the courses that you choose once you choose your courses in your my schedule Builder you will notice uh a giant wall of text definitely read that through because all your restrictions of your courses will be listed in there I’ve talked about this already a little bit by take reduced course load um five courses per term is not quite recommended uh so take your time completing your degree this will also help you increase your GPA and apply for scholarship or apply for professional programs as well you can register for senior level courses so if all of your recommended first year courses are full then that’s okay you can register for some senior level courses um that will would be 200 level or 300 level as long as those courses do not have any prerequisites you are able to register for them year one and year two list foundational courses so you might notice a huge class size in classes like Kem 101 stat 151 and you might also wonder why am I taking stats in animal health program I didn’t sign up for this these are foundational courses that will help you throughout your degree you will use those components later on when you’re talking about specific subjects uh so hang in there just get through the first year and then second third and fourth year will definitely be specialized towards your program now this is a tip for specifically forestry students students um forestry and the forest business management it is a requirement for you to register for renar 101 which is a field school and it is a mandatory course and this happens in the last week of August the date hasn’t been released yet but uh you will receive an email a reminder for you to register for this course and you will have to register through bear TRX which is the my schedule Builder uh and add that course in for your fall if you are a block transfer program uh student then uh you may not need to take renar 101 so it will be indicated on your individualized program check sheet that has been sent to you along with your transfer credit listing and things like that uh here’s a small tip about course scheduling so I would recommend that you prioritize renar 120 and renar 205 to take bio 208 because bio 208 is a is a prerequisite to a lot of senior level courses and a lot of the senior courses in renar are offered once every two years years so you want to get bio 208 done as soon as you can renar 120 is offered in the fall and renar 205 is only offered in the winter so you want to get these done um in sequentially so that you can take biot weight in your second year next is for students who are enrolled in preet program these are programs like Bachelor of Science in agriculture with major in animal science or Bach science in Animal Health in both Majors uh for students who are wanting to pursue veterinary school uh you want to make sure you aware of the veterinary school admissions requirement the admissions requirement varies based on the veterinary school that you want to apply for a lot of the students apply for the University of Calgary vet school uh in which case your program outline will meet the uh the UFC veter admissions requirements but if you’re pursuing another veterinary school like University of Saskatchewan uh you might have to select certain courses that would go towards your ad misss requirement now vetenary school is considered to be also a professional program so I will talk about selection of your courses on once we get to that for now here are some tips for preet students I recommend meeting with an adviser early once you start your school in the fall uh this way the adviser can look over your schedule with you and ensure that you are taking the right courses um to meet the veterinary school requirements uh they can also advise you on how to gain a lot of the hands-on experience uh with animals while you’re going through your program make sure to go through your program check sheet as well as mentioned earlier take at least four courses per term as well as it is a minimum course load requirement for vet school admissions and as I mentioned um taking four courses per term will also help you focus on achieving High grades and be able to gain a lot of the hands-on experience that goes towards your uh admissions requirements now I’m sure there are some of you who are wanting to pursue professional programs professional programs are non- direct entry programs so there are some uh post-secondary course requirements that you need to complete before you go in or apply for these professional programs and a lot of students ask me how should I start Choosing My courses I would recommend first of all to look into the admissions requirements uh to see what courses are required to get into the professional programs and then uh look into the course listing that is required for your ALS program compare the both listing and see if there are any courses that overlap with each other prioritize those courses first and then uh select courses that is required towards your professional program because that is your goal you want to go into professional program then you can select the courses that uh would go towards your ALS programs there’s another thing that you should be aware of is that if there are courses that you need to take that is not a requirement of Al’s programs you might not be able to register right away this is because the faculty prioritize is students who are needing to complete these courses toward their degree so if you are trying to take courses that are out that is outside of your degree uh you are not a priority so you will have to wait until uh restriction is lifted which is usually in in July or August and uh that’s when you can start registering for the course if you visit uab.edu to the bottom of the page there are some professional tip sheets available as as well this is specifically for those who are wanting to pursue dietetic specialization dietetic specialization application will be open October 1st of this year until March 1st of next year for fall 2025 admissions so that’s next year fall if you’re wanting to apply for next year uh you can submit an application once the application’s open and uh you will need to enroll for the required courses coming fall and winter now if you’re in the nutrition food general program the first year requirement meets the dietetics admissions prerequisites so you’re you just need to follow your program check sheet to be able to meet these requirements now let’s say you don’t get in for fall 2025 um that’s okay just stay in your program so the second year of the general program is very similar to the first year of the dietetics program it means that a lot of the courses will transfer over into this program uh it will not shorten the length of the D itics degree because it is a cohort program so you will regardless have to do a four-year but you will take lesser course load while you’re in the degree which will help you in GPA and other things you can do part-time and and things like that there will be lots of uh dietetics admissions Q&A uh that will be hosted throughout November December January maybe even in February so uh keep an eye out for those while scheduling for your courses you may have noticed something like this so 3-0-0 so what does that mean uh it shows the amount of hours that you’ll be taking uh of certain components in this course so here uh there’s a b c so where a indicates lecture hours uh lectures are where the professors are speaking to a larger group of audience uh some in k11 for instance you might see about 200 300 students in the same class as you and then we have B for seminar uh where it’s a classroom size group activities this could be a classroom discussion or maybe just office hours and C indicates lab hours where you get to apply classroom knowledge as a Hands-On component and you can try things out uh like a chemistry has a lab where you can actually use beers and things like that okay so going back to this example 3-0-0 would mean 3 hours of lecture 0 hours of seminar Z hours of lapse so there’s only three hours a lecture that you need to take per week now here’s our next example for chem 101 it looks a little bit scary but let’s break this down so it says three for 3 hours of lecture and then it says 1 s that will be 1 hour of seminar per week and 3/2 would indicate three hours of lab every two weeks and our final example for English 102 it says variable when it says variable it means uh there’s most likely an online class component involved because online you can access at any time usually uh that it would State very able and finally here’s some few things to consider as well while you’re scheduling for your courses um how will you commute to campus so are you walking are you driving are you biking um you might have to consider traffic hours and uh you might have to wake up earlier to get to your courses are earlier courses or later courses better for you this will depend on how well you would function early in the morning uh 8: a.m. courses just a heads up would indicate 8:00 a.m. midterms as well um if there is a choice you can choose different schedule based on your needs um but yeah unfortunately a lot of the als’s courses are offered at a specific time so there’s not much of a flexibility but hopefully for other courses you’ll be able to choose uh which buildings are the classes in so how far can you get from one location to another uh you can go to U alberta.ca maps to see the full campus map and see the building names and see how far they might be I would say when you’re going from east to west um then of the campus then you will definitely make it within the 10 minutes however if you’re going from north to south uh because there’s a lot of structure in the way it may take a little bit like couple minutes uh longer but if you know you’re going to be lay for courses uh pretty regularly then you can just inform the professor that you might be coming in a little bit later and they are very understanding about that there’s some other things to knowe like courses that are titled in AU uh it means that it is taking uh place the course is taking place in Augustana campus and where is Augustana campus in chem Rose uh and that is 1hour drive away from Edmonton so you don’t want to take courses that are titled in AU courses that are titled in French are courses that are offered in campus St Johan campus St Johan is not that far away and we have a bus shuttle that goes from north campus to campus Shan uh and it’s about 15 20 minute drive so you can take French courses if you like and they will be credited into your program as well uh things like biology courses in French courses that are located in Yukon are offered in Yukon University which is located in Yukon and that’s a flight away uh unless you’re registered in major in Northern systems or you’re doing a semester in the North or a specific field trip uh you do not have to register for this course so now let’s move into the demonstrations so where can I find program check sheets program check sheets can be found in your Yu baa email uh but if you have not received one yet you can also find it on our website you can go to uab.edu current student you will find this page very helpful uh there’s a listing of degree planning foreign cabinets and all these things as well as the student clubs and things like that today we’ll be visiting this specific link so let’s click on that and undergraduate degree planning will give you lots of resources on helping to plan your degree uh things like approv program elective this will help you access uh the electives that you need for your program and major so you can click on that link and you can see all the programs and majors um and then here’s a program check sheeet so this is where you can access this link directly to the Google Drive and um in the Google Drive you will notice different folders with different year because you have been admitted into fall 2024 you are uh you will be accessing only this folder going forward from 2024 to 2025 is basically your contracer with the university every year the program might update so which is why for yourself you will always be accessing the 2024 2025 so you’re going to go in there and you’re going to see a lot of program check sheets this program check sheeet lists all the majors as well as the programs um today I’m going to access the agriculture one and going to just uh download that okay so we have the program check sheet here uh first of all you want to check and make sure that it is your program and major so this is the program for agriculture and major is Agricultural and resource economics and the academic calendar year uh is 2024 to 2025 and you can see in the table below uh there’s four different columns each column indicating your school year and um as an incoming uh high school student you’ll be starting from year one uh as an incoming transfer applicant it will vary based on the number of transfer credits that you received so under year one you’ll notice there are 10 rows so there’s 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 so it there’s basically 10 courses and we talked about earlier that uh the university plans for a 4-year program where you take 30 units per year and 30 units would equate to 10 courses each box represents one course so this means that you have to take animal science 101 course and then this one here it says AR 214 so you have to take that course um in a box where it lists multiple courses like this you are choosing one of them to fulfill this requirement and there’s econ 101 and 102 and there’s the English three units um a lot of students ask me what English course should I take this is where course catalog page would be very handy if you scroll down to the second page there’s actually a link to the course catalog right here so if you click on that it will take you to the course catalog page I’m going to duplicate that so I have the program checksheet open on the other page okay so the course catalog page is very useful in terms of looking for any type of courses you can look for course description when it’s offered um and course restrictions all these things so under subject line you can just type in egl for English and you click View and leave this empty and click View and you will see a huge listing of English courses um now you can go one by one and see which English course that you’ll be eligible to take English 102 you can read here that this is the description and usually the restrictions or prerequisites are listed at the very end of this paragraph uh here it says not to be taken by students with six units in approved Junior English it just means that for students who have already taken 100 level English courses they won’t be able to take this course so this one it doesn’t look like there’s any specific restriction that would um limit you from registering for this course so you can go ahead and take this course if you like and then next is the English 103 so let’s go through this one and at the end it says the same thing not to be taken by students with six units in appr Pro Junior English and this course can be only taken once for credit um and yeah look into the department for specific topics so this one looks like it there’s no specific restrictions so you can take also English 103 there’s English 125 and this one at the end uh has the same restrictions about the junior English but also it says sections reserved for students in the typ program so it’s a tip program including a 3-hour seminar component in addition to the 3-hour lecture component so this course might give you a little bit restrictions on certain uh sections so you may or may not be registered for this course it will depend on the ter ter depends on the section so um this is kind of a maybe maybe you can take this course uh English 150 uh if you read here so at the end it says credit does not fulfill Arts common English requirements um and then it says restricted to students registered in faculty of Arts so this course has a restriction that you have to be in faculty of Arts to take this course so you won’t be able to register for this course because you’re in faculty of alss the next one you can see it in the title that is English for engineering students and at the end it says restricted to students in faculty of engineering only so you can’t take this course now we’re moving into the 200 level of English courses uh at the end it says uh prerequisite six units of Junior English so you need um at least two uh two English courses in 100 level in order to take this course so you will have a choice of English 102 English 103 or maybe English 125 to meet um the English uh requirement so going back to our program check sheeet where it says uh English three units uh you can take uh any of 102 103 or 125 to meet the three unit requirement for this box it’s the same case for the next box and this uh you choose 134 144 or 154 um this box you’ll take St 151 and where it says free elective is is a place where you can take free elective course uh other things I should cover is the approved program elective so things like this one uh it says 300/400 level approved program elective it means that you have to take 300 level or a 400 level from the list that is provided under your approve program elective and at the right underne this says breath comp um this is a specific group of courses that the faculty has Pro invited you and you have to choose from that specific group so if you go into um let’s go back to the uh als’s SSO so from the student services we will go back to undergraduate student degree planning the same page we were on but except we’re going to click on the approv program electives so when we click on that it shows all the programs and majors and we were in agricultural resource economics so we’re going to click on that major and when we scroll down we’re going to see here right here it says group breath components and even list how many courses of these listing that you need to take so you’ll be just choosing two out of these listing okay so yeah I I quickly went over um the second page of program check sheeet but it lists lots of really uh helpful useful uh resources so definitely look into to read through all of this even list this directly link to approv program elective as well so that’s it for program checksheets now we’re going to move into the UA calendar the UV calendar can be accessed by U.C calendar and what calendar is is uh it it basically is the rule book for the whole university it has all the policies and all the requirements that you need in order to meet your graduation requirements um and you will be able to see that uh the are lots of great information in here first thing to note is your contract de right uh so univers of Alberta calendar it says 2024 to 2025 that is the year that you want to always go back to in order to check your program requirements so this link will be updated uh each year uh so next year will be 2025 d226 you can stay in that specific year only if you want to check some of the deadlines for that year so if you go into the academic schedule this is very handy so we go into that one and you’ll be able to see all the dates and deadlines um here says dates and deadlines from Fall 2024 or winter 2025 terms when we click on that you have lots of different listings here now I want to know about when the classes begin for fall and winter if you click on that we can see classes taught over the full term in the fall is September 3rd 2024 and that is when you will be starting your school which is exciting and the winter term classes will start in the January 6th of 2025 so these are good indications of when you should start preparing for school uh maybe if you have vacations uh this way you can plan a little bit easier okay so going back to the very beginning of the calendar page um another link that you should know about is the undergraduate programs link um these the academic schedule and undergraduate program can also be accessed at the very bottom of the page in this giant green button so academic schedule or undergraduate program so I’m going to click on this one and here you can go into your faculty so faculty avails um if you are choosing to move into a different program in another another faculty then you can select another faculty to see the program and um major course listing as well so for faculty avails we’re going to go into that one and let’s choose the animal health program so when we choose the animal health program it gives you some general information and then admissions requirements which you don’t have to worry about because um you’ve already have been admitted into the program and then a specific requirements so it says all students in The Bachelor of Science Animal Health must successfully complete the course in common program course so complete all the core courses as well as Capstone course um when we click under the majors your specific major so let’s click on companion and performance animals you will see that there are listing of program requirements so there’s 75 units that you need to take in total it will be 75 units and on the major requirements there’s 42 units and then the Capstone requirements which is the three units so if you add the 3 42 and 75 it will come to 120 units which is the full degree that you need to graduate from uh this program so program checksheet is basically a preder version of the calendar and if there is a discrepancy between the calendar page and the program checksheet we will always go with what the calendar says later on uh throughout your degree if you have some time I implore you to explore the universal Alberta calendar page you will find a lot of great details under um under the calendar okay and now let’s move in to my schedule Builder you can find my schedule builder at uab.edu Builder my schedule Builder will open up in a new tab and you will see that there are two panels on the screen so first panel is grade out but in the second panel you’ll be able to access your specific terms as I mentioned earlier you can access both fall and winter and register for both of those terms we going to go into fall 2024 now on the left uh there are some filters you want to set your filter so that you are only selecting courses from the main campus or the north campus uh you can click on campuses and uncheck off campus locations and then locations you can uncheck Augustana and campus Johan now in this search box you can start typing in your courses when you’re building your schedule it’s a good idea to have a couple of tabs open so we have the program check sheeet and the course catalog going back to your program check sheeet you want to think about the prioritization so we want to choose als’s courses or prerequisite or co-requisite to a certain course what you can do do is start from year 1 and with the first box so it says animal science 101 we’re going to go to the course catalog type in animal science 101 and see that the prerequisite is bio 30 which makes sense as to why we require bio3 to apply for majority of our programs but you can see that below this course is only open during the winter term so you won’t be able to register for the fall term so you can go back to your program check sheeet and check the next in the box so arak 214 we’re going to search for arak and now this says prerequisite of math 30-1 which we have but you can see that it’s only offered in the winter term as well so we’re going to move down the list here you can choose one of the courses so I’m going to look for Bio 108 and you can see that bio 108 has fall term 2024 so it is offered during the fall term and when you click on it it will show you the listing of all the lectures and Labs that are available but my schedule Builder is Handy that you don’t exactly have to choose specific lecture or labs and at the end of this paragraph it says pre-requisite bio3 uh so you would have already met this requirement now let’s go back to my schedule Builder and type in BIO 107 108 and let’s select bio 108 now on the right automatically um the lecture was chosen for you and it has added a la for you you can use the arrow button to see other lab time slots and see which one you might like the best and on the course description you’ll be able to see the class remarks or also known as the course restrictions and you can read here that it is restrict to students in faculty of science or to students in the program outside of Faculty of science for which this course is a requirement or require science option until August 15 so if your course do not require bio 108 you won’t be able to register for this class until August 15 okay so add let’s add more classes next is Ecom 101 and I know that Ecom 101 is a requirement for a lot of the business students and resource iomic as well we’re going to go back to catalog and type in econ 101 and econ 101 is definitely offered in the fall term and it says at the end it is not open to students with credit in econ 204 which we don’t have so we can register for this course we’re going back to the my schedule Builder and typing in econ 101 you can see that Eon 101 lecture has been added automatically and if you scroll down of the middle panel you will will see that econ has also uh been added as well let’s move down the program check sheeet I know that Ecom 102 has a prerequisite of Ecom 101 so I’m going to skip that one and we talked about how English is not really a prerequisite to anything in the senior level courses but I do recommend that you go through every single one of these courses and write down what are the prerequisite and co-requisite to these courses that way you’ll be able to tell automatically and see if it is required in the senior year going down the list we have math math is definitely required later on so let’s look at that in the course catalog I’m going to choose math 154 and here you can see that prerequisite is math 30-1 and we have that already credit can be obtained at most one of 100 113 114 117 Etc this just means that you can’t take another same level of calculus and here we can see that it is offered in the fall term so we’re going back to my schedule Builder we’re typing in math 154 and it adds it to the list and we’re going to add just one more which is stat and I know that stat is also a requirement for a lot of the business and resource economics uh type of programs so we can just type in stat 151 I know it’s offering in a lot of the terms so here we go so everything is added and it’s nicely laid out but let’s say I don’t want to do a bio 108 lab on Thursday I can block that out and uh let it move to different location or you can use the arrow button to see if there are other um availabilities out there but I actually liked how math 154 was laid out in Monday Wednesday and Friday so I’m going to go back to where that was like this and if you click on math 154 it’s going to pin it and when you pin it it’s going to hold that specific schedule there so you can move things around and now Ecom moved all over so we’re going to click on econ and maybe I should just click on most of these but for Bio 108 when you are clicking on pin for the lecture it also will pin at the lab automatically so please keep that in mind so we’re going to unpin that and there’s only six results so let’s see what we have just going to move things around and sometimes it does slot it in where you have blocked it out so you can just go back and see where else you want it it looks like the lab is only offered um after stat 151 which is going to be a long day but I’m just going to keep it like this because I want my free Tuesday and Thursday so once you are ready to register we are going to make sure that all of these courses have a check box then we’re going to click get this schedule when we’re getting this schedule you’ll see that the action has enroll automatically it means that you will be enrolling for your course and now it says enroll enroll for all of these courses and we’re going to click do action and continue now it’s been added so we’re good to go we’re going to go back to return select courses and you can see that the techline has switched to enrolled so it means that it has been enrolled and you’re good to go for fall one thing I’d like to show you is when you’re adding in a course that is not in your faculty now I’m going to try adding uh English 199 which is the uh English for engineering students and it does slot it in you can see it here and we’re going to continue to enroll for this course uh the ones that have been enrolled already shows that it has been enrolled and English 199 says enroll and looks like there’s no issue but when we click on do action it will give you an error so failed and it will give you a reason why it’s been failed so make sure to read through the restrictions that is listed right below to understand why um it might not register you for this course so I’m going to delete that let’s say I have a course that I really want to enroll for now we’re going to try P um plant science 221 and when we add this course it’s going to say that there are no schedule combinations with selected course and when it gives you an error like this it means that my schedule Builder is noticing a schedule discrepancy between another course unfortunately we are not able to tell uh in an easier way so we have to go and uncheck each of the courses and and see which one it might be overlapping with so it looks like it’s the math 154 course that happens between 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. so with the plant science 221 let’s say I want to register for this course not for math 154 so when you uncheck this course it says drop course so you are able to drop the course that you have enrolled for um I’m going to leave this checked and go to get this schedule and on here it should automatically say I want to drop 154 but I want to enroll 4221 if you do the action it shows that it math 154 has been confirmed dropped and plant science has been added so this is how you can add and drop courses once they become available if let’s say a class is full my schedule Builder is very handy in seeing your schedule visually and be able to add and draw courses with one click but it doesn’t have all the functionalities the other platform that I will show you is manage classes now let’s go back to Bear Tracks now on the main dashboard of Bear Tracks this is where you’ll see the my schedule Builder and right next to it there’s manage classes so we’re going to click on that and say I’m not a robot and we’re taken to manage class uh mainboard so on the left uh you will see lots of functionalities that managed classes offer but today I want to focus on Swap classes although my schedule Builder has this functionality like we’ve done earlier uh it is recommended for you to do this in manage classes just because of the smoother functionality and we’re going to click on Fall 2024 and now we’re going to swap it back to math 154 so uh I’m going to select the plant science 221 that I want to drop this course then you can either leave it at class search or if you know the class number you can uh add this in going to click continue and here we’re going to type in math 154 and select the course then here uh you’ll be able to see the open seats on the left side so you can select the the one that you exactly want uh with the specific time and date and all that so I’m going to select this one for our lecture and it says review class selection so it shows that you are you have selected math 154 so yes this is correct and now you want to confirm the class swap so you’re dropping uh plant science 221 and you’re adding in the math 15 four so I’m going to click submit and yes and it has a nice green check mark so it means that it has completed now if you go back to my schedule Builder it will show you that um those classes have been swapped so going back to fall 2024 perfect so math 154 has been added although the step seems a lot longer than my schedule Builder but it just ensures that there’s no discrepancy between the server of bear tracks and the courses that you add and drop so it is always recommended to use managed classes but you are able to do it through my schedule Builder as well so with that let’s go back to our PowerPoint this table shows the comparisons of functionalities between my schedule Builder and manage classes both of them you can find your enrollment dates and and you can also browse course catalog although we do recommend using my schedule Builder to browse through your course catalog or even using the course catalog page that I showed you earlier uh my schedule Builder is the only place you can build a schedule you can search for courses and enroll for courses in both my schedule Builder and manage classes but manage classes will only allow you to register for one course at a time in both my schedule Builder and manage classes you can drop your courses but manage classes is the only place you can withdraw from courses withdrawing from a course means that you are already enrolled in the course and you have taken some time in the course but throughout the semester you’re struggling and you’re not doing so well so you are withdrawing from that course it will give you a w as a grade on your transcript but this will not impact your GPA of your full transcript and my schedule Builder is the only place where you can watch list a course uh meaning that you can uh sign up for a notification when a class is full however at the time of when I’m making this video currently it is not available on my schedule Builder they’re still working on it once the functionality is uh available they will send out a notification by email to everyone and manage classes is the only place you can do change program uh this is when you are changing your current program to another program where you have received a new admissions so I went through some of these tips already so when you’re using my schedule ual Builder you want to use a computer with a large screen or a large tablet uh for ease navigation of this functionality and uh you want to filter your campus uh you can pin priority courses so pinning your als’s courses or prerequisite co-requisite courses that you really absolutely need to take that term that way my schedule Builder can slot in the courses that are lesser priority uh in the gaps that that has been indicated you can also block out uh personal hours if you need to do part-time and things like that if you’re getting errors uh these are some of the things that you should try so use Chrome or Microsoft edge browser as the compatibility between my schedule Builder and these browsers are a lot more smoother uh you can try clearing your browser cash uh you can try restarting your browser and also check for browser updates if you’re still having issues with errors you can submit a ticket at U.C askk here’s some frequently asked questions about registration so when can I register for winter term uh you can register it at the same time as the fall term so you are able to register right now what does Maine mean uh Maine is listed under the course description and it just means that classroom has not been assigned yet but it will be located on the main campus which is the north campus if the classroom has not been assigned it will be released around July August at the latest and where can I see Professor assignments professors are listed also under the course description um if it is not there yet then it will also be released around July August at the latest how do I change my major or declare minor um this will be under the ALS form cabinet in the link provided below you can also access it through uab.edu of next year so you’ll have to wait for it to release some students have asked me if I can take courses during spring and summer of this year before I start school uh the answer is no because you’re not yet a current student you become a current student once you start in September when can I start an internship Al’s Mini internship program is the one that you can participate as a first year student uh you can start as early as this fall term science internship program and business co-op program you will have to wait until your second year is there travel time between classes uh although on your schedule it looks like it ends at a 30 minute or at an hour specifically but there is always a 10-minute gap between courses so you will have time to get to uh one place to another in that 10 minutes my core course is only offered in Yukon what’s going on uh you can check the other semester there are some courses that are offered in both fall and winter terms but only one of the term is offered specifically in Yukon and the other term is specifically in North Campus so you can switch to the other term to see if it is offered how does Yukon courses work can I take them uh the students who are in Northern systems major or semester in the north program are able to take Yukon courses um but there’s also this specific course called renar 465 uh it’s a 10 to 11 day field trip to Yukon and it’s a great elected for Environmental Conservation Sciences forestry or Environmental Studies
