    what is going on everyone welcome back to another video today we are checking out the best Dutch cycling infrastructure okay interesting title but let’s see let’s see what we got here guys don’t as well I have a list of topics that I want to cover on this YouTube channel the very first thing I ever put on that list after moving here was bicycle only roads because despite visiting the Netherlands a half dozen times and of course watching lots of bicycle Dutch videos it still surprised me how great these are true now that we’ve been living in Amsterdam for a while this topic seems almost too boring to cover I take these routes several times per week and I’ve come to expect them wherever I travel so for this video I’m going to try to remember how excited I used to be before this became just another part of my everyday experience I mean seriously isn’t this great whatever the Chrome engine bicycle highways but that word is almost always used to talk about National cycle routes between cities not roads within the city so for the purpose of this video I’m going to incorrectly refer to these as bicycle roads okay you can register your complaint about my incorrect terminology in the comments below let’s see what every city I’ve ever lived in had recreational Trails or multi-use Trails but these bicycle roads are different and these aren’t like the London cycle super highways either which are of course the stupidest name for any bicycle infrastructure ever those super highways are pretty much just the same as the high World Dutch cycle pass that you’ll find along any major road in the Netherlands the biggest difference is that while other cities put bicycle trails where they’re easy to build so just imagine they have a bicycle bikes Road right in between the buildings that I’ve never seen something like that it’s actually unbelievable for me literally I’m a former rail line or through a park these bicycle roads are part of a wider Network and are explicitly built to connect to destinations you’d actually want to go to such as a sports arena a park a school a swimming pool or a hospital okay so I find myself using them regularly because they’re the fastest and most convenient way to get to where I need to be bicycle roads are designed to the highest standard wherever possible that means they’re at least two meters wide in each Direction with smooth red asphalt and without any barriers or sharp turns this makes them extremely safe even by Dutch standards wow they even take into consideration breaking the wind so that it doesn’t get too windy along the Route it doesn’t get any better than this for cycling this kind of network totally changed cycling for me I’ve never considered myself much of a cyclist I prefer trams and trains I’ve ridden bicycles in many of the places I’ve lived but I never really enjoyed it very much I mean for me as well bicycles I don’t really drive them or ride them however you want to say it like nowadays I just use my car to be honest but like when I was younger I used to always use my bike you know like in the neighborhood with friends when we used to go out and we just all had bikes you know it was just like a thing so that that was fun but like literally we had no bicycle roads that’s the sad thing about it so here in the Netherlands it’s amazing how many bicycle roads they actually have I mean I like the exercise sure but I generally did it because good exercise the painfully slow public transportation that was always broken traffic when I ride a bicycle in Amsterdam it’s still because of the fastest way to get around but when I’m on a bicycle Road I actually enjoy it I know like you also have all that beautiful nature like around you you know so it’s nice I realized how much of my time cycling was spent worrying about cars even if you’re in a protected bicycle lane there are still side streets driveways parked Vans and Junctions but on a bicycle road you can quickly and easily get from point A to point B and never cross paths with a car when a bicycle Road meets up with a car Road the cars will often go in an overpass allowing people to cycle underneath without ever worrying about Motor Vehicles at all wow they literally have an underground cycling path bro that’s just wow wow man this is all part of the Dutch approach to separating routes taken by cars from those taken by bicycles but I’ll talk about that in a little more detail in a future video when you get to a junction with another bicycle Road there’s never more than a yield sign because traffic lights and stop signs are stupid and we only need them because of cars oh I hate stop signs this means that when you’re on a bicycle Road Network you never need to stop making it trivially easy to travel long distances while bicycle roads are designed primarily to connect between significant places across long distances there is usually an effort to put other useful destinations along the line like this bicycle road that connects directly to a train station or this one that has easy access to bicycle parking there are even some bicycle roads that have people’s houses directly off of them which makes for a very peaceful front yard sometimes I find myself going out of my way to take a bicycle Road even if there’s a slightly faster route along a regular Street just because of how pleasant they are so from now on I’m going to try not to take bicycle roads for granted and when I ride on them I’m going to appreciate the hard work of the Dutch planners and Engineers who have gone out of their way to make my everyday trips as easy and stress-free as possible wow very very interesting video here guys wow let me know guys your thoughts on this in the comments below and I hope you     2. A lot of cities use the " Wheel spoke " system. If yo want to go to the center of the city , you do so by travelling from the "rim" via a "spoke" to your destination. If you want to go to a nearby place in the center, a bike can do so directly. A car however has to go back to the rim, travel this rim and enter the center again via a different spoke.

    3. Not only in Amsterdam but everywhere in the Netherlands. Many/most city centers are car forbidden or car low.
      Riding a bicycle is the faster way to go anywhere in a city or large villages.

    4. And do not think we do not use electricity, telephone, television, internet etc because you do not see a cobweb hanging above… We've got it all, but underground, just like water and natural gas distribution.

    5. I am from Belgium and we don't have fancy bicycle roads as the Dutch have. But even when you mix with cars, you will notice the drivers are careful and give priority. Because today they are the drivers, tomorrow they will be on the bike. That makes a lot of difference.
