Crailsheim, located in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, experienced significant conflict during mid-April 1945. Initially captured by US forces following an assault, the town was soon retaken by a German counter-offensive. Intense bombing and artillery shelling by the US military resulted in widespread destruction, and ensuing fires devastated the historic inner city. Remarkably, the Johanneskirche (St. John’s Church) was the only structure to remain unscathed.
