BRUTAL OFF ROAD EDINBURGH TO MANCHESTER: The Pennine Rally

I took part in the Pennine Rally, an off road ride from Edinburgh in Scotland to Manchester, a route taking in most of the National Parks in the North of the UK. It features some burly off road sections and hike a bike. This video is of the first day, a savage ride from Edinburgh to Hawick.

morning welcome to the beautiful Edinburgh where I’m riding home basically doing the penhe rally 500 doing it on big squish and basically riding from Edinburgh to Manchester over the next few days taking it quite chilled kind of just wanted enjoy it and yeah was late last Rider to start was pretty standard had a little bit of a mechanical thing to sort out but the guys at Gamma helped out you’re in Edinburgh go and check out gamma amazing little shop but yeah on the way now yeah quite quickly out of Edinburgh on the canals which is lovely um you may have seen I’m riding a full sus mountain bike few reasons one it’s new it’s nice and shiny so a guy called Luke plan the route originally who ran Outdoor provisions and he’s a mountain biker so I know there’s going to be some Mountain biky bits and I’ve ridden some of it before and and I rode it on the old drop bar hard tail and definitely that was the right choice then three British gravel we don’t really have gravel of what you would have in Europe or America in the same way like those miles and miles of um beautiful I guess Service Roads we have small bits of that princess gravel and we have a lot of mountain bik terrain basically [Music] [Music] doing this scar oh oh cocked up challenges I’m good I got [Music] it hand a group now so I will be riding with these lovely humans until where are we stopping and I think I think pronounced ho according to hike H I think we end up riding like 10 something K in total it’s warmed up but it’s a bit humid I’m pretty certain it’s going to get wet [Music] [Music] can I lamies love a [Music] Lamie a Savage I was trying to hold on to my CR uh someone’s cheating you so we just came down that enjoy yeah I eat my crank oh nice nice oh not nice my mouth the last little bit down there sharp up and now we’re kind of like I think that’s the Steep big steep one maybe no there’s one more today definitely but we’re there slowly gate I’m gate boy it’s important job if happens when you’re the quickest one you have to uh slow it down I wasn’t the quickest one yeah I’m just a good gate guy [Music] I’ve already seen the like travel gang I said I knew you so oh my God I got oh yeah there there’s people behind super mix free snack Alex no good A little bit of moisture just a little bit it’s a bit overcast uh it’s okay at the moment we’ll see what happens it gets worse on the road for a bit it’s nice to sort of break it up actually cuz the off-road is quite slippy and sliding so therefore quite slow so yeah bit of Road means that we can get some distance in a bit catch up a bit yeah nice group little bit of rain all [Music] good cold back in some forestry land forestry Forest started raining Scotland it’s like Wales rains a lot yeah I love Wales I love Scotland but it does rain a lot log oh my goodness um don’t don’t try and step over that with two legs it’s quite far it’s wet really wet it’s really wet don’t like rain nice away it’s definitely raining definitely wet about 10K to Peebles get some food try and warm up a bit go again this isn’t so fun right now there muddy yeah play this bit you can do it we can get to the top now no you got do it we make it to the top we’re on the spiky bushes no woo you can do it I love cycling [Music] [Applause] [Music] it’s pretty Savage huh it is hard but up it’s better than down you smashing it I don’t think I’m going to get no that’s why I stopped it’s got a bit steep there you’re smashing it as well got to the Steep bit the leg Yeah mate got steep good there yeah it gets a bit punch you up there [Music] it’s where the Steep bit what can I say on this percentage it’s black on the Garmin it’s been like this for just a consistent steep climb average gradient remaining says 15% so a nice little hiker bike it’s quite beautiful though to be fair many hours later big old high on a bike bit up to I a satellite thing it’s long probably okay this last bit of this climb hi aiky it’s like it would I don’t even know it would be ridable in the dry but in the wet definitely not um beautiful if I could see anything 35 M to go to the top my uh hiker bike FTP it’s pretty good actually I’ve noticed which is quite good seem to be able to walk uphill of a bike pretty efficiently with that pedal run and uh I think the top would be beautiful if we could see anything just about to see the satellite tower in Yonder yeah apparently one of the hardest bits on the route this because it’s hyper biky and long so it’s like a 5k climb and you start on the bike just gradually gets steeper and steeper to a point where it’s definitely not ridable um be on my skill set anyway I’m sure there’s people that probably could but it’s big I’ll just turn the camera around it’s like that like that pretty much all the way up there and I’m quite a bit ahead of the other people I was with so I have a we we at the top and see where they are at the top the only way is down now right I’m cold that’s cuz unfortun you’re quite quick and you had to you’ve walked up there rather quicker than we have my my hiker bike FTP is nuts it’s good isn’t it yeah I’m well impressed with it I was like just like when you got you know the where you got to the top of you could walk down yeah well right down we just [Laughter] looking got it seeing hell mate spin it a little bit more and this was on this you might be right GE Whiz It’s it’s hold surprising yeah it has it’s there roughly somewhere around there anyway cuz that’s where the biggest pile of um what did you call what did you sayar happy bike juice I think is what happy bike juice yeah yeah yeah do we think I stab it or do we think I don’t I would stab it would you yeah I would cuz I mean it may be seal have you got spare doodads oh yeah it is dads being I have the amount of dads that come in the doad holder so you’ve got two I’ve got no it’s a race proess fault I’ve got three small one big yeah I probably would stab it to be fair or do you want a bacon these are the best Bacons are terrible you can find the hole is this Dino PL I think it’s this is a dino plug yeah should we twisty twist best tool in the world best tool in the world world this is now officially the best 45 pound I’ve ever spent there you I I I don’t care what people say like din a plug it’s very expensive I I Rave about it so much it’s not I’ve never been given one for free being completely blunt bought one for every bike I have mounted on the bike they’re so good it just works most importantly now can you call someone at tailin and tell them I need a new one cuz it’s coming in um Happy bik Barry’s having a m he had his puncher his light fell off his computer fell off he fell down some stairs fell into a bush anything else see so far it’s a lot isn’t it he’s still in good spirits though Alex is fine she’s just chilling slow down you’re having a m aren’t you mate I am but you would start filming once I put my go put my little wo Mount away I’ve already told everyone it fell off there yeah yeah yeah I mean that’s now not attached it was attached to the W we’ve got another strap hanging down you canra because that was what saved my waho from falling off into Oblivion but there’s a strap underneath can you strap that onto something I could but it was contact actually and then it be stable I say it was stable cuz that was holding the light and everything else on TI tues bloody bicycles last really big climb of the day it’s been challenging conditions have definitely made it challenging been pretty Grim but just look at the views worth it for that I wasn’t really sure what my plan was going to be for this one um originally I was thinking you know pushing on uh ride through the night a bit but in reality actually today’s been pretty hard so quite happy just getting to Ho Harwick I’m not really sure I think it’s ho how it’s pronounced um got a little hotel stay there for for the night try again tomorrow see how I feel it’s first like multi-day thing I’ve done in quite a while so I’m just really kind of playing it day by day trying to enjoy it starting to get dark um I think I’ve got like 15 that was okay until I get to where I’m staying tonight it’s been a really hard day um just conditions haven’t been great terrain is challenging massive kudos to everyone doing this cuz it’s hard it’s really hard quite a lot of people are camping um of course it’s fully allowed you’re allowed to Camp um equally you’re allowed to stay in hotels and bed of breakfast and stuff and I’ve chosen that route cuz after bad lands last year so such a big believer in good night sleep and the difference it makes in terms of your recovery to go again the next day so I booked hotel tonight hotel tomorrow night and then after that we’ll just see what happens really could be fun I might ride the remainder back to Manchester to know figure it out tomorrow but yeah big day really big luckily this bit is on the road the guys I was riding with behind turns out that Barry has had another puncher and I sort of said I was going to push on a little bit they’re all sharing an Airbnb so it’s probably a bit better for them all to stay together while I’m in a hotel and kind of need to get myself there I think but yeah it’s getting late 8:00 now but stunning just this all day really not fun this is just Grim supposed to be nearly June nearly summertime I’ve got like I don’t know 10K 5 10K off course to get to where I need to get to to get a nice hot shower so I’m just thinking about that but weird we last year for this event was amazing so figures right made it to where I’m staying tonight and it could not have come sooner cuz I am cooked day one of the penine rally done it’s been pretty Savage see here for day two
