Part 2 of our weekend in the Peak District.
After sticking up on Bakewell Tarts & Cakes we head back down Snake Pass for some more ‘spirited fun’. On the way back we came across a rather funky loud tunnel. Of course bikers will be bikers… vroom vroom!!
The Swainsley Tunnel is a 164 yard/150 metre long, single track tunnel between Ecton and Wetton in the Staffordshire Peak District.
The tunnel was originally built for the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway (1904-34). It was built at the insistence of Sir Thomas Wardle, a L&MVLR director, so that the view from nearby Swainsley Hall should not be spoilt.
The route of the railway, and this section of road and tunnel, is now part of the Manifold Way footpath and cycleway.
Snake Pass is a hill pass in the Derbyshire section of the Peak District, crossing the Pennines between Glossop and the Ladybower Reservoir at Ashopton. The road was engineered by Thomas Telford and opened in 1821. The pass carries the A57 road between Manchester and Sheffield, but it is no longer the main signposted route between those two cities, with traffic instead directed through the Woodhead Pass to the north.

I genuinely assumed any road that had pass at the end was a single-track nightmare of uphill hairpins. Edit, the Peaky Bilker recently went to Ironbridge for that world famous shop lol. It took a while to click.
