Endless Spring – European Family Cycling Adventure

Highlights from our family’s 5-month 5600km sabbatical cycling trip through Europe. We started in Sevilla, Spain in March 2023 and finished at Salisbury, England in August. We began in Spring in Southern Europe and were able to maintain Spring-like climate for most of the trip as we generally cycled North and/or to higher elevation. We cycled through 11 countries (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, and England.) and completed the Camino de Santiago (Camino Portugues, Camino Frances in reverse) and Via Francigena (Aosta to Rome) pilgrimmage routes.

We cycled over the Cantabrian mountains, Pyrenees, Col du Petit Saint Bernard, St. Gotthard Pass, Albula Pass and through the Italian Dolomites.

We cycled in the Algarve, along the Atlantic Coast, and along the North Sea Coast. We cycled alongside the Mondego, Minho, Rhone, Drôme, Isere, Dora Baltea, Po, Taro, Magra, Serchio, Tiber, Ticino, Reusse, Sihl, Rhine, Albula, Inn, Etsch, Eisack, Rienz, Ansiei, Bòite, Piave, Drau, Möll, Gasteiner, and Salzach rivers.

Camping was our most frequent accommodation. When on the pilgrimmage routes, we stayed at albergues.

We are two 50-year old parents who’ve taken a 16-year hiatus from bike touring to work and raise our daughters. They were 13 and 14 years old at the beginning of our trip. This was our first long tour as a family.

We averaged 53km per cycling day and climbed over 53000m of elevation. The girls completed schoolwork from the road.
