The 217th video of my train spotting adventures.

This video takes us along through South Yorkshire up from Sheffield to Meadowhall Interchange railway station. A moderately-sized 6-platform (+16 bus/coach “platforms”) DfT Category C2 “Important Feeder” station, Meadowhall Interchange is not the first station to be present in the region. The first was built back in 1868 by the South Yorkshire Railway (SYR) on the Blackburn Valley Line between the old Sheffield Victoria station and Barnsley station, called “Meadowhall and Wincobank”. This station eventually closed in 1953, and the track was eventually lifted and turned into a cycle path by 1987, though the station building survives in good condition. Upon opening, Meadowhall Interchange effectively replaced Brightside station less than a mile down the line, but limited services continued to serve Brightside until its closure in 1995.

Meadowhall Interchange was built to serve the new Meadowhall shopping centre, opening in 1990 on a former steel works site in the Don Valley north-east of Sheffield. The interchange was constructed to the north of the shopping centre with a pedestrian suspension bridge linking the interchange and shopping centre. Both rail and bus/coach stations opened together in 1990. Four years later, the Sheffield Supertram opened its platforms in 1994; this was the first section of the tram network to open, between here and Fitzalan Square in Sheffield city centre.
