Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a light jacket / vest for the rainy summer days.

While looking for one I noticed that a lot of jackets / vests don't have any rear pocket.

Is this normal? I know the idea is to wear a jersey underneath, but I guess every time I want to get something from my pocket (gels, bars, etc.) will create some issue.

For the ones with these types, while riding, is it "easy" to lift the jacket/jacket from the back to take something from one of the jersey pockets underneath?

Some examples of these items without pockets:

I believe it’s a temporary fad that’s going thru the industry like the seasonal flu. I hate it. I hope we go back the other way soon.

  2. The thinking is that you can you might want to take it off whilst moving so wouldn’t use those pockets anyway – otherwise you’d be transferring everything from gillet pockets to jersey pockets.

It also decreases the pack size.

Plus, it means (e.g. on the excellent Rapha Pro team gillet and wind jacket) you can have mesh at the back for added breathability, which I much prefer.

If the garment has a two-way zip, you can just unzip from the bottom and then grab whatever you need – it’s easy enough. If it doesn’t it can indeed be tricky – especially if paired with a tight fitting jersey with high pockets.

It’s a matter of personal preference – for me fabric and fit are more important.

  3. I have vests with and without pockets. It’s not a dealbreaker, but I definitely prefer pockets.
