This Bridge Was STACKED With BIG PERCH! Canal Fishing Dream!

This session I hit the canal with the lures in search of elusive big perch using lures only! Throughout the session I share some hits and tips when it comes to targeting post spawn perch, but I never expected the session to go this well! Especially when I found the honey hole!

hello guys and welcome back to the channel today it’s all about targeting big post spawn perch on the canals there can be a real tricky fish to catch sometimes but hopefully I’ll go through some hints and tips today and fingers crossed we’ll get a few to the bank so in my opinion big Canal perch are probably some of the hardest predatory fish to try and tempt in the UK they’re in still water which means they don’t have to feed all the time like River PGE do and they get a lot of pressure obviously all the canals are accessible to pretty much anybody which means they get a lot of pressure they don’t have to feed too much which makes them very very Elusive and hopefully today I’m going to go through a few hints and tips I like to use especially post spawn like it is now to try and tempt some of those bigger fish some of those 2B plus fish and try and get some on the bank fingers crossed I catch them today and I share some hints and tips along the way w so before we got fishing today I had to make sure everything was in order from the winter and it wasn’t my braid was actually frayed about 50 to 100 yards i’ bits of fray in it due to fishing heavy snags so that had to be resped onto the Reel so I’ve got brand spanking new 12 sick braid loaded on there it’s the same type of braid I actually use for my heavy law fishing it’s fantastic stuff and I’ve actually with me a brand new Rod today to go with that um fingers crossed I’ll get a look of the new Rod today and it’s the SG4 light game Rod 3 to4 G so it’s absolutely perfect for throwing small hard baits and the sort of larger soft plastic baits we’re going to be fishing today just like this one here this is the fat teail minnow in a 7 and 1/2 cm it’s a slightly larger bait than I would probably use in winter time on the canal and in the winter time I tend to use uh baits more like creature baits but this time of year they’re really aggressive it’s after the spawn so this bait actually has a slight rattle inside so you’ve got the aggressive action of the tail the rattle inside fingers crossed get a few takes I’m also using some small suspending jerk baits as well um I’m using primarily the gravity twitch um and you’ll find that when you’re fishing for this perch you want something that suspend so when you jerk it and stop it on that pause that’s often when they’ll take it and sometimes you can leave that sat there for 3 4 seconds before they actually strike so fingers crossed we’ll get a few fish on the bank today using those methods and hopefully look at the new Rod let’s get cracked on [Music] oh got hit then plent of your small fish now I did just have a hit from a very very small fish possibly a small perch or a tiny Pike and then um I got stuck in a bush and snapped off well there’s a follow that’s not the Pik that had it before wa what a hit believe it or not even though that’s a small Pike that’s bigger than the one hit it the first time maybe this one got fired up by me uh having the other fish hit it that was really cool though hopefully you can see that on the GoPro not the Pig p are after but we’ll take it great fun he really did choke it look at that absolutely awesome oh you booger you almost did a number on me then boy beautiful little Jack pike but not quite what we’re after now little Jack will do this to you I’m obviously fishing a very light wire trace and it’s completely kinked and twisted it up there right down where it connects so I’m going to do is that’s one it’s going to impede the Pres on the presentation cuz obviously when I pause this bait you’re going to have all this crumpled up line in front of it um and two it obviously weakens the wire so what I’m going to do is just cut it off just above where that Kink is and retie [Music] whoa aggressive look of jackp nailed that J Bait I shouldn’t have been walking towards it then really just had a p Tak in that I might not been able to feel the take absolutely crushed it poor little guy some females had you in the mouth see you later buddy [Music] [Music] follower got it oh no oh that was a good size pitch no no [Music] no yep no follower come on yep come on got it we got it we got it on the gravity twitch just let it sink down we’re not going to net this one because he has got an exposed hug and I don’t want it to get wrapped up in the net that is actually a decent size perge he’s a post spawn as you can tell really long bit of a tattered fin there look at that only just skin OED I just had one that did the same thing um and unfortunately I lost it straight away it’s a lovely long fish there and definitely seen some things this one let’s take a good look at him there we have it guys a lovely post spawn perch on a suspending jerk bait real fun way to catch him I had a few fish follow it um I dropped the bait right down to the bottom it’s a very very slow sink and had one perch near it just before it hit the bottom um lost it had a couple cast back out again and this one just couldn’t resist it real real nice fish long length to it and I would say if this was three four weeks ago this fish would have been a two pounder absolutely stunning right let’s catch some more it’s important to note that when I’m changing between the soft plastic baits and the jerk baits I am changing the leader I’m using don’t worry I’m not just using fluorocarbon for both um I’m using a six PB Trine uh when I’m fishing the small sof plastic baits it’s clear water the perch can actually see your leader quite well um and fishing a soft plastic bait dragged along on the bottom they will be able to spot Your Leader so fish as light as you feel you can get away with with the snags and then when I’m fishing with a jerk bait obviously you want a pike to take it and up with trouble hooks in its mouth so for that I’m just using a 10B steel leader that I’m tying onto the line in the exact same way and with a Flor carbon obviously we don’t want to risk any break offs and like most canals around the country there are areas that are pretty Barren and it’s the same with my Canal I know I show you the good bits but there’s lots and lots of areas where you can travel from miles and hardly see a single fish even though it’s Crystal Clear and which is why the polarized glasses come in handy and they come in very very important and also the bike um that way you can travel Miles and Miles watch we your glasses look out for the bait fish the moment you find the bait fish you know the pitch aren’t going to be too far behind I’ve got a bit more biking to go I’m expecting to do about maybe 14 to 16 mile round trip today just trying to find big perch put the leg work in find the fish and you’ll catch him oh [Music] [Music] now bridges are always a prime area for finding perch and this one is probably the best one I’ve seen in a long time cuz not only do we have a nice long dark Bridge there is thousands upon thousands upon thousands of small roach and small road all the way through this tunnel here I just had a couple of casts with the other side of the bridge and I had something decent to hit the bait and bend the rig round so it’s time to see if there’s anything else under there opting to go for a soft plastic bait it’s something that actually really does imitate some of those Bait fish down there looks very very similar going with a more natural pattern it’s time to see if I can get one there’s loads and loads of bait fish there we go there we go feels like a decent perch oh spooked all the roach that is a decent perch yes yes yes yes yes yes yes God putting up a really hard fight all the roach and R is spooking all over the place that’s a fantastic fish yes that’s how were 40 cm oh and he’s just SP out that soft plastic bait that fat tea tail minnow just got annihilated that’s a good size perch what I might do is just sit it down in the margin while I have one or two more cast so I’ve just sat him down in the margin there he’s perfectly fine he’s completely covered in water and we’ll just have maybe two or three more cast all those Bait fish have got spooked now and you never know that might spare on there we go another one the fish to feed and there we go that’s another good size perch literally the next cast out out oh no he just come off that was a fantastic fish that was probably bigger than the one I’ve got in the net a that would have been fantastic wouldn’t it two of those in the net at the same time hook sharp enough it just came off that was another 40 cm perch on the next cast out instantly one more cast and we’ll take a look at this fish so gut about the one I just lost I would I would argue it’s probably bigger than the one I’ve got in the net and that’s a decent size fish with a canal oh no I think that might have been another one that could oh I was going to say that could have been a snag but it’s it’s bent on my bait round look that was definitely another fish and it was another good size one the hooks are sharp could we’re definitely not getting another chance now oh we are that’s another perch please stay on it’s another good size one four big foot perch hooked under this bridge can you believe it oh that is a good one that’s a really good one that’s a really really nice one that’s definitely bigger than the one I’ve got in the net oh my God oh my God oh my God that’s a big one yes look at the size of the belly on that that fat teail minnow has disappeared into that perch’s mouth look at that match the hatch fishing a bait that matches the pattern of the bait fish in there and that is a real fat mama 24s in the net and that big one’s probably a 2 pounder the smaller one’s probably a high one okay I could have had three or four big fish in the net then let’s have one more cast before we take a look at these oh my God what a bit of fishing and I set the camera up now there and it’s the first time I’ve set up with loads of confidence I was going to catch and it was because we’ve got the bridge we’ve got all these Bait fish stacked up there’s not really any other features around here for the perch to hide in another bite so for all the bait Fisher here the only B cover is the bridge where are the perch going to be they have to be under the bridge really what a fantastic bit of fishing that’s another cast exactly on point where I got those two fish and lost the other one maybe there’s a bit of a structure down there it’s like just before um the arch weight we got another one oh yep that’s another decent Siz fish that’s another good one I can’t believe it okay that’s definitely the smallest one out of three I’ve got out of two I’ve got in the net how have I G and got another one oh look at that net definitely the smallest one it’s got a great big bite mark in it that’s probably from a bird of prey as it’s not got a mark on the other side which means that’s a punct wound it’s probably probably a heron and that soft plastic bait once again has been absolutely demolished time and time and time again I can’t believe this net fish it’s getting bigger and bigger and bigger I’m starting to wish I brought a bigger net [Music] guys what a spell of action I haven’t measured that one but it’s probably about maybe about 35 or something centimeter fish we’ll check this one straight back this first fish was around about 38 CM stunning perch yet again I didn’t weigh it probably about a pound and a quarter pound and a half now it’s time for the last one big old pot belly female perch I don’t know whether she’s still full of eggs or if she’s full of roach and rud but this is a perch of 42 cm and a perch of 2 10 oz the only one I weighed out the bunch but what a stunning fish real real nice old Canal Warrior what an absolute unit caught on the exact same bait absolutely stunning fish but stunning Purge exactly what we were after today guys there is not much point in me fishing anymore today is there the aim of the game was was to Target the big perch from the canal they’re really tricky fish to try and catch but sometimes persistence pays off location definitely pays off um and if you work your baits right find the right location you can get reward and that’s exactly what has just happened found a bridge found stacks of bait fish in the margins that had to be perched there and my bait got nailed again and again and again almost had four big perch in the net amazing stuff biggest fish not too far off three pound just over 2 and2 pound absolutely amazing and all caught on the same bait I’ll leave a link down in the description
