On the line between Dundee and Aberdeen, are three least used stations in Scotland – Balmossie, Golf Street, and the splendidly named Barry Links. But with only three trains a day ( or is that four? ) does anyone actually USE the station on a regular basis? I meet up with my friend Lewis to take a ride on the evening service to Barry …

The 1610 Glasgow Queen Street to Arbroath is the only evening service that calls at Balmossie, Barry Links and Gold Street heading northbound. In the morning there are only TWO trains that call heading south.

when in Scotland make some videos was at uh Le uh this morning up until lunchtime uh actually camridge and the Le uh new Railway station’s happening there and after I finished I was looking at my map of Railways in Scotland and it occurred to me uh that Barry Lynx in Gulf Street was only just a short ride up if I went to Dundee First which is where I am and then carried on and got the evening only service that stopped at Barry links and Gulf Street which is why I suppose the title of this video is going to be something like does anybody use Barry link station I don’t know Le what do you reckon do you reckon anybody will get off at Barry links one person at least me two you and me nah you’re staying on I’m staying on yeah yeah you you can get off a golf street I’ll go by Links will meet in the middle now that is sort of what happened cuz during the cultural Railway project for 2017 I visited Barry links by car drove there turned up in a platform had a quick lot round home and then left and later in the day got this like the evening train through stuck my head out a Barry and then got out I got out at Gul Street and then walked to Cari and then got the train back from Cary but I’ve said I’ve never actually gotten on a train or off a train at Barry length so this today it’s just so I can take it off my list I was in this part of Scotland it just seemed rude not to and I I just want to know who else gets off the train cuz I don’t think there going to be anyone so there’s three stations in this area Barry lyx G Street and Bal Mossy that all have low passenger numbers because the majority of trains don’t stop at these stations there appears to be just two in the morning heading south and the one or is it two services in the evening heading north stop at all other times everything passes fast through and so they get really small number of passengers as we’ll discuss more later and yes there are golf courses in the area three if I’ve counted correctly not that many people though seem to use the stations to get to these golf [Music] courses that’s Bal mossi just there which is the other as you seen on the map the other station only gets the one train a day in the evening going northbound uh six people got off but it was weird you had to get out the front Carriage even though this Carriage there was platform there there wasn’t platform there it wasn’t it wasn’t oh is there a Harrington hump up that end is that why okay that’s got the hump okay there you go very legs is it just done oh PL your a whole platform to our Sals thanks it’s just us Louis it’s just [Music] us I remember how there’s nothing here it’s what I remember guess what it’s still nothing here actually you said that there there is an on travel information board station but look so Barry links is here Station Road goes out to the the the uh the a930 by Red it’s a really short distance to GF Street and then it’s about the same distance again uh to Cary which is about like there what I remember from 2017 is that there was one train southbound in the morning and then one back going northbound in the evening but as recently as just yesterday CU I read it on Wikipedia it’s saying that there are two southbound trains and two Northbound trains so the service have doubled and that increased passenger numbers there another reason why passenger numbers have increased which we get to in a minute but when I actually check the actual time table the Wikipedia article is wrong cuz there’s two southbound but there’s only one Northbound there’s just one Northbound train which is what we arrived on so there’s no more trains now until tomorrow morning but what I want to know is why did they remove the second Northbound service if they’ve retained two southbound services in the morning why not have two south and two North at the moment it’s uneven two south and one North and I don’t know why was that an inter 7 city that was a HST going rather slow for some reason but yeah it’s going up aine Arro yeah that direction up I think it’s aine what did you say about it being a well kept station it is a well kept station look there so the tat to Pavement is all very nice and new um leou is there a ticket machine there are no ticket machines here is there a is there a car park no there isn’t no bike rack no bike racks okay what what does it have H it has a bridge to the other side if you want to go back the way but does have a does have a do Matrix has a do Matrix and a shelter has a shelter there’s two shelters they’re bus shelters and they’ve got the little flappy bags in them and no time table uh and I haven’t heard any audio announcements there’s been no PA there are speakers there are speakers but we’ve had no PA no can you see it that’s a third platform it was a third platform yeah very much what kind of service pattern would indicate that would be the third platform here for Russia Barry Russia or Barry yeah exactly yeah in the 1960s yeah were like you know clearly thousands of people here well that’s what we just saying Jeff cuz like there’s a station house over there so it must have had some sort of issues in here and back there just discussing so over there is uh the platform extends further on to the distance so must have had like longer trains at some point B longer trains more platforms yeah [Music] [Music] wow come on in L uh do you mind getting wet passenger figures by the way the bike rack is immediately behind us yes you need to talk about the fun anomaly that happened in 2019 ah yes what I’m going to do is Splash up on screen over time a timeline of Barry Link’s passenger figures but there was an impressive spike in the 201920 period because of a hilarious thing that happened in March just reading this in March 2019 Scott ra ran a promotion yep where to sort to say sorry for terrible service at some point they offered all season ticket holders across the network on affected routes unlimited travel anywhere on the Scot Network for selected weekends in March to May 2019 so if you had a season ticket you could then just on those weekends in March April May you just rock up anywhere you like and have free travel indeed and a bit like my gold card which I buy between Hatton and lorth for cheap gold car PHS and a bit like buying a season ticket when ride and ride St John’s people then came out and bought a season ticket specifically between Barry links and Gulf Street cuz it’s just up there yes never used it to make that Journey but did use it to get their free travel and that meant the figures for 201920 for Barry links and GF Street just went whoosh it corrupted the data it completely mared up the data yes which is hilarious so yeah it’ be interesting to find out now that because all of the stations we have that have least used stations it’ be interesting to find out in the future if those stations go back to their original figures because we do these a video Chef we go to the least new stations well well not just me now but others too so there there’ be a circulation of General stations that are the least used there’s nobody here today Jeff there’s just me and you and who else gets on here in the morning at the rain oh no it’s fine it’s fine um it’s all Ming up if you have anything else profound Louis to say about Le you stations uh now would be the time to do it before I get any wetter f is prompting me to think and I’m not good at thinkinking should we go to Golf Street and end there or go up to Cari or we should we should do something rather than just sit on the rain soaked platforms of bar links which is be another small brief inl while we decide what to do next this is great I’m loving it being here come in the summer don’t come in the winter [Music] so the title of this video uh I was asking one solitary question Louis yes hello does anybody use Barry Ling station I can so far I’ve counted one uh two people two people just us two that that that would be it yeah we we got a taxi to KI by the way the weather was not been kind we’re getting the train South yes I’d still like to know why it gets two southbound and one Northbound if anybody knows why uh please uh let us know and we’re just going to get our southbound train home yes you’re going to Dundee I’m going to Dundee I’m going to Glasgow thanks a lot come to Sunny Scotland it’s always fun bye-bye h [Music]

    1. The Wikipedia article (at time of publishing this video) for Barry Links station, says "… whilst northbound there is a 6:11pm and a 6:48pm, both to Arbroath" – I think this is wrong as I could only find one Northbound train that stops in the timetable … who wants to double check it, and correct Wikipedia? 🙂

[ UPDATE : Someone corrected Wikipedia within 8 minutes of this video being published! ]

    2. There is or was an army camp at Barry Budden which may explain the older long platform. I ended up in hospital after falling off the assault course there in the 70s lol😂

    3. The passenger usage figures must come from tickets sold. As there are no ticket purchasing facilities at the station perhaps more use it than those recorded?

    4. I have used Barry Links station – and Balmossie and Golf Street, 2 years ago when there were two northbound trains! Then, you could start at Balmossie, alight at Barry, hang around until the next train came and then alight at Goff Street! (It is worth saying they had an all-day service until 1992). As evidenced by the extra-wide footbridge – that allowed soldiers to march in formation; Barry Links used to serve the large Army training & firing range to its' immediate south, which closed only a few years ago. It had been used only occasionally in recent years, but until the end of the Cold War it was more or less permanently manned, and even further baclk, long troop trains from all over the UK arrived here – hence the third platform! Are you aware of Springfield in Fife, Geoff? It had been served by only two southbound and three northbound trains for decades – despite there being a sizeable village, an agricultural college and a large hospital nearby…

    5. "It would be rude not to"? I can't imagine you being rude, Geoff. I think the long and extra platforms would have been for troop trains. Barry Buddon was (and is) a military training range, but clearly they don't come by train now. The evening trains figures are probably alnost all enthusiasts like us. I did get on one lovely sunny evening at Barry Links. But does anyone get on at 0618?

    6. As kids we used to play football on the pitches next to Barry's military training base, the story was to be careful going to retrieve your ball if the red flag was up as there would be stray bullets flying around, lol.

    7. Okay, Barry Links is in the middle of nowhere, so I understand why it only has a limited service.
But Golf Street is in the middle of a residential area, so it deserves more trains.

    8. When I was the Manager in charge of these stations, the wonderful man in charge of Golf Street Halt always showed me that he had managed to sell a 1st class ticket to London Kings Cross.

    9. Remember to visit Springfield Station Geoff! Another one of these odd anomaly stations that barely gets a service despite being on the mainline! 😁

    10. The free travel promotion was a bit of a shambles, like Abellio in general. You needed to have a Smartcard season ticket, which I did. You used a webpage to add your promotional tickets to your smartcard and I decided on a trip from my local station, Carluke, to Inverness. Lo and behold, the tickets were never added to my smartcard despite having an email confirmation. So, I had to explain what happened to every Conductor and Ticket Examiner and the barrier staff at Inverness and Waverley. I got so much grief from a conductor on the Edinburgh to Perth train that I considered giving up and going home.

A week later, my wife, also a season ticket holder, tried again with a trip to Dundee (IIRC i got two free days as an annual pass holder). Same thing! Between that, and the Smartcard season ticket never letting me pass through barriers at intermediate stations, the following year I switched back to paper.

    11. As someone who grew up in nearby Arbroath, this is so cool to me. I took the train to Dundee so many times as a kid and had no idea this station existed…until one day in 2016, I was travelling home from uni and I spotted it on the dot matrix for the train I was getting on. I even tweeted you about it at the time Geoff asking what the deal was because I was so confused!

    12. Totally of subject but I saw you this morning at a coffee shop in Hove. I did try waiting for a bit to say hello but it seemed like you was busy talking to someone from the bus service. Just wanted to say that I love your vids and seeing you was more exciting then bumping into PewDiePie!

    13. There's technically 5 golf courses in the area – Panmure and Monifieth as you mentioned, but Carnoustie has 3 of its own – The Championship Course, The Burnside Course, and The Buddon Course.

    14. That schedule almost mimics the two rail lines nearest my house in western Connecticut in the US. And, they can't imagine why people prefer to drive their cars.
