welcome to the butterfly effect I’m Chris hor this is stage five of dolphin a 2024 today’s race 167 km about 105 miles in length we got a bunch of categorized climbs on today’s race but the category 2 climb Summits with about 100 km to go so that means that this should be a good stage for the sprinters when you have somebody like mads Pon from Li Trek remember he wants stage one he can get over climbs and he’s a sprinter very very qualified Sprinter Sam Bennett ag2r in the race too he’s the second Sprinter here at dolphan a and when the cameras come on we see Li El Trek and we see ag2r on the front of the Pelon we go up and look at what the Breakaway looks like we got three Riders up there halter from Uno X is up there we see Lear up there in the K Jersey and then Tobias beay from albasin dunic is up there doesn’t take very long we’re at about 75 78 kilometers to go and we’ll see the Uno X Rider as he loses the front end in second place his bike goes down he slides across the road and Halter’s having some problems right here as he’s crashing with 75 km to go in today’s race but it’s gotten slippery and nasty out here and you’ll see the K Jersey just sitting there third whe he’ll just avoid the crash and come around now if I point out something with halter because it’s really slippery on the road right now when he crashes you can see him adjusting his body position and actually lifting himself up onto his cleats and his pedals as he’s sliding this I’ve had this happen many times when I’ve crashed in the rain and you’re sliding along time you have time to actually readjust your position and try to get yourself up off the ground and that’s what we’re watching halter do now he’ll jump on a spare bike he’ll get back going and he’ll catch back up to the front guys but he’s not going to be there for too long because with about 45 kilomet to go he starts having some problems on The Descent again and it looks like he’s a little bit undecisive about how much air pressure he has in the tires or whether if his bike’s handling well or could be whenever you’re fiddling with your bike at this moment they could be feeling something under the tires that slipped and sliding a bit too much and that’s why we see halter he backs off lets it throttle off just a little bit and we’ll see Lear has the bridge to Gap back up to Tobias beay now when we go back to the pelaton what was happening back there liel treack and ag2r were right in the front but with 55 km ago things had started to get very nervous certainly once guys in the Breakaway start crashing and it’s wet and slippery out the director sport tees are going to tell all the main teams borans gr UAE team Emirates and of course sudo Quick Step with the race leader Rim coool after yesterday’s fine time trial Victory those teams are always going to start pushing to the front and we see viz molisa bike at the front throughout the whole part of the video being on here on today’s stage five this is a little bit new territory because remember they’ve been riding a little more in the middle a little more at the back on the stages one and then coming to the front on the more mountain stages of two and three but now they’re at the front full flight we know it’s getting nervous back there because even viz molisa bikes up there and all the teams are represented with Li l Trek starting to form at the front now we’re coming down to next descent we’re about 35 km too Tobias Bay is on the front he’s got a gap behind with Lear back there in the K Jersey chasing as they’re coming through the town Tobias Bayer is going to sit up he’s going to Pat his hip that’s his code signed there for I’m waiting for you get back on he gets back on and those guys go up to the next K just about with 2628 km to go laber secur some more KO points now this will help him out to keep the jersey after today stage five but we still got the mountain stages starting really big time for the next 3 days when we’re talking about stages 6 seven and 8 now the pelaton as they’re coming up over this K everybody knows it’s danger control everybody’s got red lights flashing every radio is going off from their director saying you have to get over the top and we’ll see at the front of the group they’re flying over the top of this last K here going full gas as they’re dropping down The Descent with just under 25 km to go look at the back pelaton as they’re going over this k though these guys are sprinting back here so you know at the front it’s full gas and as they drop down The Descent oh it’s going to get crazy and nasty there’s going to be a big time crash we look at the camera from the back we got two estana Riders back there tahad a little bit over to the left and Anton’s on the right we look behind tahada that’s Roman right there from DSM Roman kabo and as as T tahada in front starts seeing the crash happening in front of him it’s so slippery he’s starting to move a little bit to the left kabo Roman kabo from DSM starting to hit the brakes but he hit it a little bit later so he has to move hard to the left once he does he just barely misses tahada there he goes sideways the back end’s getting all kicked off he’s going up into the hillside there where the ditch is on the left side he hits that rolls hard and then comes out and hits his head hard on the edge there between the concrete and the grass pavement hopefully when we’re talking Roman Kobo he’s okay right here on this stage five cuz this was a nasty crash with a lot of speed now what happened over to the Riders let’s go back and back the film up as we look at Anton back there once the crash started happening in front of him what’s saving Anton what’s saving tahada here from crashing well first off Tada got very lucky that Roman kabo went all the way to the left instead of just crashing in the back of him otherwise he goes down when we look at Anton on the right what’s saving both of these Riders two things had to happen of course over there for tahada because he had to be missed from the back wheel but now the pelaton if I take you when the first Rider crashes in front of the two estana Riders look at the one tell telephone pole there or energy pole on the side of the road there as you can see the pelaton is going so fast look down at the bottom of the screen there shows the speed of Anton there he’s doing 65 66 kmet an hour we’re talking about over 40 miles an hour right now and the Riders because the road is so wet and slippery they’re literally sliding from one pole all the way to the next pole that allows the two eston Riders to be able to slow the bike down a little bit and avoid crashing now let’s look at an aerial view we see the Carnage just about the whole pelaton went down when we look at the front of the Pelon there’s four Riders up there we’re talking three vimma Lisa bikes made it through this crash that’s sep cus that’s Jorgenson third on General classification we see that the third Rider is T sput the fourth rider that’s Chone I believe from l l Trek those four guys made it through the front here they started at the front especially Jorgenson he was always riding second third wheel in the pelaton behind his teammate up at the front but he wasn’t riding fifth sixth wheel behind his team cuz he wanted a better spot coming down to descent now paid off for Jorgenson as he’s made it through the crash when the camera backs up and we start looking at all the other Riders we see the race leaders yellow Jersey that right there Remco Abol yesterday stage individual time trial winner he’s went down and he’s sitting down he’s got all his teammates wrapped around him now the next guy on General classification Primos roget he goes down to and you see him up standing next to his teammates he’s shaking out his arm rolling his shoulder his his right arm around cuz he wants to make sure shoulder okay he’s had shoulder operations before so he’s checking that out everything at the front of the pelon’s been stopped now when we’re talking about the two original Breakaway riders with Tobias Bay and with Leber matis laber those guys are held up but they only had about a 30- second Gap anyways as now some of the pelaton are starting to merge up to the front with those two guys when we go back and start looking at the crash though we see vizol Lisa bike yes three of them made it through the crash at the front I already told you orgon s sep cus they’re GC guys but when we look further back they got some problems back there cuz Steven kwicks went down hard and Dylan Van barley went down hard too both those two Riders will get up and be walking around but both will leave the race and we’ll see Steven kwick with some kind of what looks like a shoulder injury he’ll walk his way onto the gurnie and then they’ll load him up in the ambulance now when we’re looking over at the pseudo quickstep guys Rimco the pool does get up we see him walking back and going to his car but let me back up the film a little bit so I can explain what’s going through some of the Riders hit immediately when you see the crash it’s like the Riders at the back how do I survive when you with Roman with Roman Kobo when he went off to the left he went off into the grass this is one of the rare moments when you crash and I’ve had crashes like this many times when I was riding with fdj I was supposed to do the tour to France and I was and I was riding midi Le in France just a few weeks before the tour to France when I was told you’re doing the tour to France when I crashed it was on a flat Road it was dry but we were in severe Crosswinds and lining the side of the road were trees as you go down those famous fren roads and European roads with all the Big Trees lying on the side I had a choice of either staying on the pavement or going in the grass but if I went into the grass i’ hit one of the trees lining the road so I decided to stay on the street this is another scenario where you absolutely want to stay on the street because if you look at the crash of Roman kabo again he had the ditch there then he has the mountain Hillside always on the mountain Hillside there’s always something in there some kind of big rock something that can stop you something that can keep you rolling and with the ditch the bike drops down in the ditch everything thing just starts exploding into pieces it’s not a good place to crash even though normally up here on the butterfly effect and Beyond the coverage I would always tell you you pick the grass but on the Hills side it gets complicated on the right side with the poles you never want to go there so you basically want to stay in the street and at that moment when the Riders are coming down like the Stana Riders if they were to crash or if we take the riders in front of them like the bar and victorus right a little bit onto the left side once he crashed he got up and ran off the road right away worrying about other riders coming behind them so when you’re coming into that section you know you can’t go left you know you can’t go right every time when I’ve crashed in this scenario I look for a body to tell you the truth I look for someone that’s already down on the ground and I try to land on a person or body or even a bike is better than actually hitting the road but I’ll still take the road when it’s wet and slippery over the telephone pole and over the mountain side with the ditch because that normally doesn’t come out well for you if the bike drops down into some kind of hole as I already told you things just start explo loading on the bike now another scenario that’s happening after the crash we see a lot of the quickstep Riders we see Landa we see Ilan Van Wilder and we see Giani mosan and they’re taking a nature break this is because not because they’re not interested in what’s happening it’s because you’re so wired as a professional athlete that immediately you’re thinking okay how do I survive this crash how do I make the crash lessen the damage once the crash is actually happened you’ve gotten up the next thing is how are my teammates looking the very next thing is okay what do we got to do to get ready for the race when it restarts you’re never thinking about the race going neutral you’re always thinking about the restart and that’s why we see pseudo quickstep Riders taking nature breaks and we see Primos rogl who’s sitting second on the general classification after he’s finished checking out his shoulder after he realizes he’s he’s probably okay at this moment he’s taking a gel at that moment and then all of the riders that will finish today stage five they’ll roll back down The Descent nice and easy they’ll go into where the two original Breakaway Riders were stopped everyone will R up rendevu up there they’ll have a pause and then what’s going to happen is the race organizers are going to realize they don’t have enough ambulances so they’re going to neutralize the stage the whole group is going to ride into the finish of the race now what’s going to happen tonight at the hotel as today’s race didn’t count there was no stage winner the only classification that worked on today’s stage that they continued was the K Jersey which I told you laber already got everything else was neutralized but there is a ton of work to do after a stage like this the mechanics have to fix bikes left and right they’re going to be up all night and very early in the morning to get the bikes prepped with so many riders crashing the director sportifs they’re in crisis mode I told you Visa Visa Lisa bike they had two Riders leave the race Dylan Van barley and Steven kwick both those two Riders are scheduled to to do the tour to France on their tour to France roster they have eight Riders listed on that roster and I can tell you Kristoff leaport might have been a question mark for the tour France Yan tratnik did the jro along with Kristoff leaport where he crashed Yan tratnik was doing the whole jro so he might be tired and he might have only been on the list of the torto FRS because they needed to put Riders down and they were going to change them out later so that’s two Riders out of eight that are already probably questionable for the torto France but now you’re Lo losing Steven kwick if if the injury today which looked like it to his shoulder if that’s a problem and he can’t get get back on his bike cuz remember we’re getting down to 3 weeks time before the torto front starts so Steven kwick is going to be questionable Dylan Van Barley’s out of the race today so he could be questionable that’s four Riders on viz Melisa bike out of a eight Rider team that most likely won’t start the tour to France but now Yan tratnik and Kristoff Port might be the guys they have to take so hopefully their form’s getting a little better now when we start looking a little further into that Tor to France roster remember they don’t even know if yonas vgo right now is going to start the torto France while van art I believe we’ll start the tourto France we’ve seen him racing already when I saw him racing in Norway he looked like he was on very good form for a guy that was coming into into his first race saw him getting some top fives two top fives on different stages so we know W van Art’s riding good enough with especially with three weeks four weeks to go at that point from Norway to the Tor of France I believe W vanard would be in there but you’re going to have to find someone that can climb that can replace Steven kwick if if his injury here on today’s stage five won’t get him to the Tor to fr FR now when I’m looking at their list it starts getting pretty thin pickings there I see Keon UT Brooks and I remember he was riding 6 fifth at the Juro ditalia before he got sick and dropped out so if he’s healed from that if his body’s back to 100% if he didn’t go on vacation after getting sick he might could be a possibility for the tour to France but when we start looking at other Riders to to replace Dylan Van barley it starts getting pretty complicated when you start thinking there’s four guys out of an eight Rider team that you have to replace now now like I said Yan tratnik and most likely Kristoff leaport I don’t think we’re going to be there anyways W van art would have replaced one of them but you still have to find someone else so when we’re talking about Mick van djk Tim van djk did the jro mick van dijk’s been good at the classics along with his brother so if Mick van dy’s been riding good Mick you might have to get on your bike start doing some extra miles because you might be at the tour the fronts their list is not super depth right there so they got all kinds of problems with this crash next team I want to talk about Bor we got Primos Rog he says he still needs to get his shoulder checked out afterwards when he’s talking to the Press when we go over the REM Co pole he seemed to be a little bit better in the crash today because he did go down in the crash too the crash he’s going to have to wait and see how he feels but from his interview it looks like he’s pretty decent did have some soreness though that he was talking about I believe if I remember correctly in his knee and of course he had some operations done on his on his uh not operation but he had shoulder work issue when he crashed on stage four of the bass country so tomorrow stage six is the first Real Mountain Stage here at the dolphin a Bora hrow director sportifs they’re in panic mode too mechanics like I said are doing all kinds of work swanier and our physio guys at tonight are working all day long the director sportifs now have to come up with a plan if you’re studo quickstep in the race leaders yellow Jersey you got to go over to rim Co the pool and you got to say how bad is it can you win tomorrow’s race can you win the overall General classification because they have couple different options one’s the only good option Rim coab the pulls 100% his teammates bring him into the last climb on the next three stages he does battle with Primos Rog glitch Jorgenson up there and they see if they can actually hold on to the race leaders jersey that’s an easy tactic 101 it’s like butter spreads easy it’s easy to understand but when we start talking about the other two guys Landa and Elon Van Wilder if REM coab theol says I don’t know I’m bad maybe he needs to wait till the race starts tomorrow maybe he needs to decide in the race and just say nope I got problems I hit my knee in the in the crash yesterday I’m sore my shoulder’s not working right something’s not right I need to back off well then the only other options for pseudo quickstep is you have ilon Van Wilder and you have Mel land that you can put in the early breakaways because there’s going to be a break Fest happening on tomorrow’s stage here of dolphin a because it’s the first Mountain Stage and everyone knows that no one’s 100% on form when after the crash today so it’s going to be attack Fest like crazy viz M Lisa bike might have already been planning on putting sep cus in a lot of early attacks and so if that’s the case and Bor Hans girls Rim coap team thinks that oh maybe I’m not so good when I’m talking Rim coo they have options to put Mel Landa and ilon Van Wilder in the earlier breaks to see if they can gain time on some of the other climbers the only problem is there’s three Mountain stages back to back so even if Mel Landa was to get into the break up there maybe he can gain some time maybe he’s a better climber than everyone in that break but we still have two more mountain stages to come after tomorrow’s Mountain Stage so the crash today has altered everything we’re going to watch in the next 3 days if Rim coab theol is not on 100% form because pseudo quickstep will change their tactics all around if they’re intelligent and try to win with Landa or with ilon Van Wilder putting in an early break only problem with that move is if Rimco Evol decides later in the race that he felt good he’s already wasted two of his super domestiques in the mountains so when we get on the last climb Rimco EV the p is isolated with no climbers around them so it’s a complicated issue for every everybody tonight swanier has got to work hard mechanics got to work hard director sport tees have to work hard on the plan tomorrow and they have to work hard for what’s going to happen three weeks from now at the tour to France if your bis molisa bike so like And subscribe tomorrow is going to be an incredible race and attack Fest from the beginning and the mountains when we talk about the summit finish of Tomorrow stage it’s going to be magnificent there’s going to be attacks all over the place after the crash and all of the insecurities of how everyone’s form could possibly be after the crash today on stage 5 make sure you guys like And subscribe I’ll see you real soon for the next Edition

    1. That high side was brutal. I know people are going to hack on me but if you read the roads after the rain storms if it looks like ice it's usually sliek and if the pavement is dark in color it's usually not as slick I always try to ride in the darker colored pavement. And you can see this in the broadcast. People blaming the organization is crazy. The riders know it's sketchy put continue to push it. When they could have just dropped the pace.

    2. I am absolutely gutted for all the riders involved. I simply don’t get why there are so many nasty crashes at the moment. Seems to me like the UCI and the organisers are not doing their homework right…

    3. Disc brakes are the main reason why these crashes are happening, they are just too strong in wet conditions for skinny tyres at high speed.

    4. I have a question: What about Sam Bennett? This race was supposed to decide whether or not he'd be a part of Decathlon's TdF team. In stage 1 he finished second, today the race was cancelled. So, the results seem to be extremely inclonclusive. What shall the team do?
      1. Not take him.
      2. Take him.
      3. Decide based on some future training data.
      4. Send him to another race. There is still Baloise Belgium Tour left where Philipsen is supposed to start. Should Bennet drop out of Dauphiné and get ready for that race instead?

      Thaks for your thoughts.

    5. hit the road jack ! 🎶🎵disc break , and bad tyre good film !!! im selling side wheels if interested ! what happen to the giroscopic effect ? why stop the race ??????because they fell of! bichette !!! 💩stage!🐛🐛🦋🦋🦋🦋njoycrapstage on french road🦩!

    6. Wow, that was complicated! You did a great job, as always, explaining the intricacies of grand tour racing. "Your Boy" does a great job of editing the videos too! Thanks again.

    7. I remember racing in the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix and the fog in the morning and the roads were so wet that we had 15 or 20 guys go down at once sliding uphill on the roads.
Well you have to know the course to know what I mean, but yes, a crash fest.

    8. Nothing like grabbing a handful of front disc brake. Do they typically have the front on the left or right hand side ?

    9. Lol as a cyclist and a ER nurse I know why you say body but it sounds so bad. Great how you say it matter of fact so easily. But true you are not wrong. And sliding is always better than dead stop crashes. That’s when bones don’t hold up.

    10. In motor sports governing bodies can limit horsepower, car aerodynamics etc to reduce speeds if racing becomes too dangerous. Bicycle technology and rider training have experienced little to no limitations to inhibit racing speeds. In fact technology has been optimized to make bikes faster. As speeds increase the frequency and severity of crashes will likewise increase. Bicycle racing has always been dangerous and some things have made it safer like mandatory high quality helmets and better brakes but I wonder if racing speeds are approximating acceptable limits as far as rider safety is concerned.

    11. Was hoping to see the finish of the race without the crash today. I was pulling for Sam Bennet to win on my Birthday😂 but safety is more important for everyone and hopefully Roglic and Evenepoel can recover again.👊🦋

    12. Land on a body is good. Land on a bike, not good. I broke 3 ribs at T-town in 2008 landing on the top tube of a bike. Chris, if you ever come to Florida, you should come dirt bike riding with my brother and I. He has a 450 XCF, I have a 350 XCF, and our spare bike is a 350 Husky. The mtn biking on the Santos trail system is very good also.

    13. Im getting really tired of our favorite riders having half their season destroyed by crashes. Ive been watching racing since the 80's and its never been this bad. New roundabouts street furniture, poor roads, rabid, dumb, drunk, narcissistic fans getting in the way with their phones trying to do selfies are destroying the sport. Riders are getting killed not only in races but on their training rides. The players in the cycling industry have their heads so far in the sand and no one wants to address it except for the riders. Pro cycling already has a generation gap problem. Organizers and the pro cycling establishment need to get it together before the sport ends up like track racing when it imploded in the old days.

    14. Most injured riders, van Baarle, Kruiswijk and Ayuso… All three out of the Dauphine… Thus Visma and UAE are the biggest victims.. Of the 50+ other riders that crashed most are fine, but the weather wil remain crap. Thus there is a big chance that a lot of riders don't feel like starting anymore… It is only the Dauphine, and they don't want to risk their Tour participation.

    15. It makes it a lot easier for Visma to create their Tour team : (Plenty of riders left, but some did the Giro already.)

      1- Vingegaard
      2- Jorgenson
      3- Kuss
      4- Kelderman
      5- Van Aert
      6- Benoot
7- To replace Kruijswijk we pick Uijtdebroeks or Bouwman
8- To replace van Baarle we pick Tullet / Laporte / Vermote / van der Sande / Gesink / Lemmen / Vader

And let's be honest van Baarle has been crap the whole season already, he did in fact probably not even go to the Tour, despite being on some stupid startlist that doesn't say anything. About 20% of all the names that are currently on the startlist will be replaced anyway before the Tour does really start, just like every year. 😉

    16. I was very sad to hear about the crash.. Hope riders recover asap.
If there is a positive spin maybe it is that tour GC guys Roglič and Remco seemed okay.
Chris absolute legend for saying look for a body 😂

    17. Earlier this year, you talked about concerns around Primoz's lack of race days early on in this season. During his interview at the end of the race, he was reluctant to talk about returning for tomorrow's race.

If he doesn't race tomorrow, how is that going to gel with the team? He seems to be struggling with position himself with his team in the peleton.

What are your thoughts…take him out of the race to stay healthy or have him race to work more with the team? Assuming he's not properly injured.

    18. How many decades ago, did FIS place five "Forerunners" in the Start shack, to CHECK conditions before Toni Sailer, Stein Erickson, Jean-Claude Killy, Ingemar Steinmark, Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela and everyone were put in the gate?

Meanwhile #UCI just sends 180 women or men down the roads with insufficient preparation. Why not send four riders down each descent TWENTY minutes before the police (clearing for the race itself) appear? It would be high publicity if the right riders were chosen. Fans would know "Tom Boonen is a forefrunner today"! Tom would radio in "it's slicker than snot!" to the Organizers or Commissaires; they would radio the Teams… and the riders would know.

      It's not rocket science. 😢😢😢

    19. Loved the discussion of team tactic implications. Learning so much from watching you discuss tactical implications.

With 2 Visma domestiques down, it will be interesting to watch Jorgensen's tactics as he tries to stay on the podium.

    20. Steven Kruiswyc has had horrible luck two years running crashing out right before the TDF.

I figured they’d put Sepp in the break tomorrow as well. He’s down 3:36 so they may let him go but both Remco and Primoz might have PTSD from making that mistake last Vuelta

Look to land on a body- Chris you’re hilarious.

    21. something is really off with cycling as a pro sport, what other relatively popular sport has so many of it's top athletes injured as a result of the sport – this year, in particular, 3 of the 4 top riders are injured and recovering, chances are high that Pogacar will make the TdF into a snooze fest like the giro, not his fault, his competitors are missing in action. Remeber when Froome and Contador both crashed out of the Tdf? It's as if the top seeds at Wimbledon were mostly injured.

    22. If some of these douchey fans who love to run with the riders would show up with pushbrooms and detergent, they could scrub these slick roads. 😂

    23. You’re right about picking the grass. Two years ago I crashed out of a pace line into soft dirt and ground up corn stalk in afield. I recovered nicely with no damage to the bike and very little skin issues .

    24. Seemed like anyone on the right lane had an 80% chance of staying up, and those in the left lane had an 80% chance of sliding/falling…
