A three day trip to the only part of Lithuania not connected by land.

We drove over to Klaipeda on the west coast of Lithuania and then boarded the ferry to the Curonian Spit. Half of the spit is owned by Lithuania, and half by Russia- the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Our destination was Nida- the final Lithuanian town before the boarder with Kaliningrad.

  1. Its always amazing to see countries ravaged by war rebuild themselves into beautiful destinations to visit.
IIRC, this very coastline was witness to terrible fighting during WW2 with the retreating Germans fighting massive advancing Russian armies.
Many German units were surrounded, cut-off and either evacuated by small boats, surrended or died to the last man fighting in an ever shrinking perimeter with their backs to the Baltic.
Some German units in this region were still fighting when the Russian Army took Berlin and Germany surrendered.
I can't imagine the destruction this region, and Lithuiania itself suffered during this war.

  2. The 30 euros fee is only during the high season, it's 10 euros in shoulder season and 5 euros in low season. It's definitely designed to keep cars off, you can come by bus, boat or bicycle instead. When it was cheaper it was much more congested. It's probably still too low, there are still quite many cars and people are spending 150 or more per night for a hotel so the fee is low in comparison.

  3. Hey, I'm from Lithuania and when I went to Nida I used public transport so I did not have to pay any 30 euro fee, so yeah, just a tip. Anyways, loved the video!

  4. I live in Kaliningrad and can't even count how many times I have crossed that border (mostly by bicycle) to visit Nida. Without accomodation but to visit Kurshis restaraunt was mandatory. Its really amazing town, not comparable with 3 villages which we have on russian side. And the whole lituanian side looks better, I mean what is done by people. The nature almost the same on both sides.

Now the border is closed, visa is very hard to get. So thank you for opportunity to see Nida again. It brought me flashbacks and good memories.

  5. Wow, I was visiting my family in Lithuania and went to Nida on the 2nd of August for few days! It was great weather during those days and I swam in the sea. It was amazing!

  6. Thank you for an excellent video. Stunning place. And what a refreshing experience is to watch place presented in such a respectful manner. This world needs more people like you guys.

  7. Nida's plan is to close all car traffic to city. They're planing to build big parking near city, where you can leave your car. You'll be allowed only drive to city to leave your stuff.
Also there are very strict requirements to all houses. You can't paint house as you want. Also if you have a backyard you can't make all yard concrete must leave at least 25%(not sure about this number) of it grass. and etc.

  8. I have family in Lithuania. It’s too bad that they don’t care to do anything with us that settled in America during the war. What a beautiful country! I’d prefer to have not been born in America.

  9. People who aren't locals gotta pay 30 euros not just because it's one of the best resort towns in Lithuania, but mostly as 'ecology' payment due to most if not whole of Curonian Spit being an area protected by law either as UNESCO site, as national park or local natural and cultural sites, sand dunes being especially endangered by human activity. One of purposes for such high price is also to somewhat control the number of people entering Nida and nearby towns for the reason stated before. It's sad, but a lot of people aren't respectful (mostly adults with children) and climb moving dunes or walk where it's not permitted, saw it with my own eyes too. And each year there's "let's up the price AGAIN, maybe they'll think twice before traipsing (literally) on work of people working on preserving these natural wonders".

  10. that part of the land for ages belonged to old Prussia and then Germany, only after ww2 Lithuania gain that land, so why does it looks germanic, not soviet like mainland Lithuania

  11. I just subscribed yesterday after seeing some of your Bali and Tenerife content, but as I am discovering more of your videos, I find that you are a really really good presenter. Your content is very engaging. Some other moto vloggers unfortunately just make me sleepy. I also love that you film in various areas around the world.

  12. Thank you for the video, perfect way to show when inviting someone; my childhood holidays place and I started going back. After traveling to many exotic places in the world, there’s still no place like Neringa 😍

  13. Nida is, perhaps somewhat confusingly, just the administrative center of the town of Neringa. Other notable tourist settlements within this peculiar town are Preila, Pervalka, and Juodkrantė. Juodkrantė is an especially good alternative to Nida, as the width of the spit there is just 1,5+ km max, beach is far less crowded, there's an interesting park of wooden sculptures, and the prices are lower. But by far the most impressive spot in Neringa – The Dead Dunes – are closer to Preila, although you can stop there just while driving to Nida. Not visiting them (there's an impressive bit open to visitors in what is otherwise a closed reserve) is a big mistake as it is by far the number 1 spot on the Lithuanian part of the spit, imho. But it's a matter of taste, of course. Dunes next to Nida are also fine 🙂
