don’t feel like you have to hide in the gutter because you don’t have a right to use the road because you do when riding on Lanes like this or in streets with slow moving traffic on the approach to Junctions you can take a bit more dominance with your road positioning this is to stop other Road users past you when it’s not safe to do so now this is not just a tip this is written in the highway code here in the UK at least when riding on bigger roads where there’s faster moving traffic like this one you want to sit around half a meter out from the road’s Edge this allows you to be fairly dominant on the road and it also allows you to stop swerving there’s any potholes or manholes and if there’s a car like that they’re not going to overtake you but it’s not safe to do so

This is really valuable information! Maybe an idea for a full length video, but then for other popular cycling countries, as I do think countries have different rules about cycling!
This is good advice in general however I find myself staying closer to the gutter a lot of the times, especially in the city just to get the drivers pass immediately because a lot of them tend to get really frustrated quickly and perform really unpredictable manouvers such as going on the wrong side of the road especially where there is a narrowing for an island or staying uncomfortably close on my tail.
Are we allowed to use any roads except M roads? I'm hesitated try getting on some of the A roads where speed limits are higher, simply feels scared to do so.
This was very good. Especially the part about staying away from the edge of the lane so that you are not constantly swerving across the lane as you are avoiding pot holes in the tire ruts
It also gets you screamed and honked at in Ottawa…
Contrary to popular belief, the speed limit is not a speed minimum, it's a speed limit.
What model Orbea is that? Anyone knows?
its is very scary sometimes
Cannot think of anyone who needs some high vis more than a dominant riding Hank!
I once went for a protest rally by bike in SK. We were 100 cyclists and the organizers forced everyone to stay in the gutter so that we would not disturb traffic. I didn't understand the point.
Thanks Hank, I wasn't aware of this. I will be applying this to my rides. Thanks.
Basically , this is how to annoy every driver in the U.K π
Just need an educational vid for drivers showing them what safe overtaking is.
Also when riding on public roads, donβt wear all black and blend in with the road! You could at least put a high vis vest onβ¦..
Very rarely ride on the roads and when I do cameras front and back POSITIVE ACTION taken against 5 drivers on 1 35K ride
Biggest 50cm I've ever seen
this is important!! cyclists and pedestrians have a legal right to use 'public highways' (roads) while cars have the privilege to do so under license from the govt
I should think that the vast majority of car drivers dont know the highway code, in relation to cyclists.
A lot of none cyclists just think, "get in the gutter"
I think I understand what it's like to be a black man. Being black in the West is like bicycling on the road. Your allowed to exist and others are told to share with you, but you know that the road is made for them and if you get in their way, you'll get honked at or hit.
How about we give more rights to cyclist π΄ so that they are politically equal to cars?
Agree
How I wish we can here
I see Hank, thumbs go up!
26 out of the 50 US States have a 3 foot passing law. Is there a law like that in the UK?? The law allows you to ride on the road, where it is safe, for you.
I'm not a car, I'll stick to riding outside of the lane meant for 2 ton chunks of metal traveling 2x-3x my speed
Great info..even experienced people can "forget" this at times based on circumstances and location etc. Good little refreshers like this are key to keep yourself save and remember whats right.
Hmmm β¦ I always dominate the road. However, expect major violent action from motorists. One psycho was blaring his horn endlessly (I was doing 25mph in a 30mph area). Eventually he screamed past me shouting profanities and then stopped and got out screaming abuse. He held up all the traffic just to bent his bile. There was a long tailback as his hysterics continued. I ignored him and cycled on. Thatβs what weβre up against. Highway Code or not, psychopathic drivers are not sanctioned by the police.
Itβs a requirement to take the road
What about adding that great safety tip about not wearing black lest you're mistaken for the shadow of a tree?
Unrelated but why do so many cyclists wear all black? Makes you less visible in lower light conditions
Itβs great to be right, while alive to do so.
1m from the side of the road or any obstacle (ie curb, parked car)here in Canada. I recently I was riding about 2m away from the curb(due to curb bump outs) on a very wide 2 lane road. A car still thought it was wise to pass me in the same lane rather than moving to the oncoming lane, even when there was no oncoming traffic. Some drivers are just idiots.
The first modern roads were actually made for bicycles.
Iβm thinking of the many professional cyclists that have been killed while out training. Many pro teams have follow vehicles for group training rides.
In the uk as soon as you ride dominant all the smooth brains appear and make all kinds of terrible moves that put your life in danger
and thats why bikers are hated around the world. cause of you are taking "dominance"
You know you dont need tricks and stunts for us to stare at your butt cheecks, do you?
Please consider the visibility of your clothing. You're asking for a problem if you're wearing black.
If you don't follow the law, like stopping at a stop sign, you have NO right to the road!
You should now visit Oxtalls XC near Tetbury and ask them to help make a video on how to pass horses when you meet them on the raid , from infront and behind.
I think we all have to share the roads together, cycling on twisty minor roads two or three abreast is just ignorant to other traffic and extremely dangerous, however I agree with what heβs saying about position on the road as a solo rider.
When I ride I know I'm lower on the food chain and I don't act like a dick and hog the middle of the road
I live in Michigan, the law here is a three foot sereation from vehicles and bicycles. None the less a fat old dwarf who could barely see over the dashboard of her ford F150 plowed me down with all 7000lbs of her truck. Like a good Marine I refused to die and I filed charges. I never heard anything back back.
