Jonas Vingegaard was involved in a huge crash in April that could’ve been life threatening. Luckily, he has been on the road to recovery after suffering a fractured collarbone, fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.

He has recently said that he is training to start the 2024 Tour de France. But is he making a mistake? Let’s talk about it.

    A little about myself:

New to my channel? I’m an average recreational cyclist that recently moved from America to Girona, Catalunya, Spain. The Vuelta España and The Tour of Catalunya will all be held here in Spain!

Sometimes I race and when I do, I share my training with you along the way. So far, I’ve done crit racing, road racing and gravel racing. I haven’t done a duathlon or a triathlon yet, but it is something I am thinking about!

So far in Spain, I’ve seen DSM cycling, SD Worx, Team Jayco Alula, Rally / Human Powered Health cycling, Ineos, Arkea cycling, UAE team emirates and more all training here. Did you know there’s also a GCN studio here?

all saw the terrible terrible crash that Jonas finger guard and other headline writers were involved in just last month seems like it’s been an eternity from that point but just a few weeks ago Jonas has come out and said he’s okay if you haven’t seen that video here it is it’s the first time back on the bike for me riding outside and it’s really nice to finally be able to to ride like normal again and and finally to be to be able to ride on the on the road is really amazing and uh yeah really looking forward to taking the next steps as well I feel good uh yeah it’s improving day by day and yeah I still have some uh some some things to recover from but it’s going better and better of course I hope to to be there at the at the start of the 2 front uh we don’t know exactly how how my shape and how my recovery will go but uh I will do everything I can to to get there in the in my top sh if you’re not up to speed on all the injuries that has suffered in this crash here is a look at them but the fractur collar bone okay that’s a pretty common cycling injury uh but the other two injuries the fractured ribs those last two in my opinion are very very serious we’re looking at maybe four to six weeks or longer on the recovery time it’s been a month or so since that crash so Jonah says he’s okay in that video he did seem like he was having a little trouble breathing Maybe I’m Wrong maybe my maybe I’m overanalyzing the video uh but I do hope that Jonas is okay and I’m glad to see that he’s back on the bike but there are two things that I’m wondering here um that’s got me a little concerned and I’ll bring up these points now and I want you guys to let me know what you think in the comments the first thing that I want to um that I’m wondering if Jonas is making a mistake on is taking Jonas’s video at face value if he is okay why is he not doing the doofan is this a mistake for him to miss this race we all know it’s a huge uh tuneup race for the tour I think it would be a great opportunity for him to test the legs test his body under pressure um and then just simply pull out of this race if he’s not feeling it because it’s not the tour to France and that it’s totally fine if he’s not so is this a missed opportunity for him the team just released recently that he’s been doing altitude training if you haven’t seen that um but that’s my first point is Jonas making a mistake by not doing this and instead doing altitude training the second Point um or question I’m asking is if Jonas is making a mistake on is is he coming back too soon from um these serious injuries and I’m namely talking about the fracture rib in the uh collapse lung we don’t know the severity of it we’re not in the team staff I’m not the team doctor uh but this can be a very very serious injury and sometimes even life-threatening for some writers or people in general this doesn’t seem to be the case with Jonas but is he may be coming back too soon to do the to to France now there are other um uh pieces of the equation so to speak where maybe the back room conversations are okay Jonas we know you’re not feeling okay we just want to get you the startline because you are the headline Rider we have you know sponsors are important to this team uh yo Lisa bike this is their uh or visma Lisa bike excuse me this is their first year with the team so there is that side of cycling professional cycling um you want to get the viewership there for the sponsors I get that but if that is not a part of the equation is Jonas rushing his recovery to come back at 60 to 70% and personally as a cycling fan I don’t want to see Jonas at 60 70% at the tour I want to see him at 100% throwing hay makers at pogar and I want see poar doing the same uh back back to him and I think that’s great for the sport of cycling I think that’s great for the entertainment value and more importantly I don’t want to see vagar pushing his body to the Limit um if it’s not ready yet so should he be skipping the Tour all together and letting his body heal over time and then making maybe the first Grand Tour that he uh takes up after this um major crash so I definitely don’t want to see the Jonas gambling his future just to come back rush back for this tour so those are the two things I’m kind of chewing on let me know what you guys think in the comment is Jonas making a mistake by not doing the Doan and instead doing altitude training in the Alps and then number two do you think Jonas is coming back too soon should he wait until next year’s TT of France um or wait until this year’s laa to make his uh Grand Tour debut and make sure his body is 100% Rec covered let me know what you think in the comments and I’ll see you guys in the next video [Music]

    1. Personally I understand the vision we have as fans who want to see the best Vingegaard. But we have to understand that the tour is the big goal of the season for Vingegaard and for him as an athlete with the winning ambition he has, it would be a mental blow not to run his big goal of the season. You also have to understand that nowadays in modern cycling the big stars vingegaard is one of them, they race to win the whole season but mainly in their big objectives. And the tour is vingegaard's big objective of the seasson and that's why we see him as we see him trying to arrive as good as possible, and that's why I consider that vingegaard is not coming back too soon.

    2. I don't think it would hurt him to take a little more time depending on how long he was off the bike and how much performance he thinks he might have lost. That being said I don't want him to do like some other riders who have suffered a serious crash and still be for lack of a better word milking it. I just don't want a situation to arise where he is saying " I'm still not at a 100% I still need to train and recover from the wreck" but the wreck was 3 years ago…… which I've known some other riders to do.

    3. if Visma/lease a bike is open to it, let him race the TDF as a domestique who might also win a favourable stage or two, but without expecting him to win the whole thing.

    4. Question 1, Yes… that race is a good litmus test for his fitness and health… 2. Yes, IMO, he’s rushing it… even having bruised ribs is difficult and uncomfortable… fractured ribs are worse… Not just the healing, but the muscles surrounding haven’t been stretched to the capacity competing in the TDF would demand…. That’s gonna generate additional soreness and discomfort… I do agree that part of it may be the team’s sponsors doing some soft pushing… so my take is skip the TDF…

    5. I don't think he's making a mistake in skipping the Dauphine. Nothing to gain in racing a race he's already won in an environment he can't control. The last stage race he did, he crashed, so no point. With modern training, tune-up races don't have the importance they once did. If Froome had skipped it, he may have another TdF in him but he crashed and has never recovered. Altitude is the right thing for him. On the other point, his team won't push him into something he's not ready for. They'll have the numbers, they know what he can and can't handle. He's a big asset for them, obviously one that has to be used at the biggest race of the year, ideally, the only race with global coverage and interest for non-cycling fans, especially with Netflix and the rest, but also an asset they won't wanna burn, so I trust them to make the right call.

    6. Jonas will show up for the TDF, but I suspect he might have the same issues that Pogi did last year. Pogi was injured and didn't have as good a build up for the TDF and it showed up in the later stages. Time will tell I suppose. I would rather see Jonas skip the TDF and go the La Vuelta.
