hey guys welcome back to the channel so uh today we’re going to be checking out a video that was recommended by um I think the pronunciation of this i i j jurgan or Ur urgent like I really I’m sorry um that I don’t know how to pronounce your name I’d really you know appreciate it if you you know give me a little breakdown in the comment section how to pronounce your name however this person also recommended a video that I cannot pronounce the name of the city properly and I’m really so sorry because like I just don’t want to mess up the pronunciation right so um I did go to Google and um you know entered the name of this city that we’re checking out today and I found out it was in the Netherlands which is um quite interesting so I’m going to try to give it one shot at pronunciation I know I’m not going to do it right but this is the title of the video gr gr grin Yen Jen grin Jen wow I just I I’m sorry I’m really embarrassed right now anyways man um this is basically the world’s cycling City so that’s pretty cool I never seen a lot of cycling happen in my entire life like literally even though I live in Finland I live in North Finland and people do cycle but it’s not like you see it like you know a lot of people you know piled up cycling every day you know so should be interested in seeing this video but without further Ado let’s grind into this video and forgive me for the bad pronunciation if you have any recommendations click that link in a pin comment section and you’ll be able to recommend videos and I’ll check them out as soon as [Music] possible dang I really don’t have no car because I don’t like car I hate cars I love my bicycle very easy you go all the RO all my shoppings in my feet stuff how much does that weigh do you think well I think 20 kilos this is a different place all distances are short so that makes it very easy and it’s in this especially here in the town it’s easier by bike than by car so a lot easier actually wow gr again second if you got [Music] that’s a lot of [Music] bikes okay well now we in Shing and I I live here from 1969 so [Music] quite okay well now we in shingan I I live here from 1979 so quite a long time it’s a town with 190,000 inhabitants and 50,000 of all the people here are students and uh so we have got a lot of young people in this town this is or was a fortress town for a thousand years this was the town that guarded The Roots into Germany it’s the Fortress of the north consequences of that the city was contained within the military for fortifications until very late in the 19th century so there was no sprawl it didn’t expand outwards which meant of course that now we say hey we got a wonderful compact City and we can reach everything by foot or bicycle or whatever well in 1972 uh groning get a left wing uh local government and that’s the start of the I think the bicycle culture a small group of young enthusiastic left-wing ideological people and said right we’re going to change everything radically and one of the things they picked on was transport in September 1977 they introduced a traffic circulation plan which means that the city center was diverted in four different quarters and that means that cars couldn’t go from one quarter to the other quarter they have to go around the city center but cyclist buses pedestrians they can go through you put a ring Road around the inner city uh you prevent traffic Crossing the inner city you divide it into sectors you pedestrianized the center you move all your car parking out to the edge you have Park and Ride schemes etc etc etc but if you’re making a journey inside the city then you can start and finish in a different part of the city and take a direct line between the two but if you go by car you have to take a detour this is not really an anti-ar measure what this is is making the neighborhoods where people live more pleasant and making cycling into a viable option and everyone said it can’t work this is impossible the shopkeepers said we we’ll leave the city immediately U no everyone must park in front of our door otherwise we will lose all our business and then Wonder of Wonders uh the world didn’t collapse the shops didn’t leave the city uh the police found yes people could learn how to handle this plan people adapted to it and that was as I say 1977 in the last couple of coming from a guy I was never ever ever exposed to minus a lot of minus like um first of all I ain’t never really used Celsius like that right um but we’re talking about weather right now and when I live in North Finland okay I’ve never had you know before I got here I’ve never had no oh – 25534 I a’t never had that but I’m surviving right because what humans like the the weirdest thing about humans is is that we think we’re so incapable of everything right and we might look at somebody else who is not in not doing what we’re doing or we’re not doing what they’re doing and we think that we’re incapable right but we as humans are literally adjustable like we can literally go in any situation any situation and actually survive that’s literally what we are like but most of the times we just complain and we just say that we can’t do it but real facts I’ve never used a bike like you know so often but I definitely knew if I move to that City it would become a norm because it it’s the lifestyle whatever the lifestyle is your body will automatically adapt to it so n i I totally agree with with with what they’re saying like this is a beautiful thing perhaps the shops didn’t leave the city uh the police found yes people could learn how to handle this plan people adapted to it and that was as I say 1977 in the last couple of years uh the area of calming traffic has be has increased so uh nowadays it’s just normal that you go on the bike to the city center that’s crazy look how much people wow that’s beautiful that’s beautiful inia the average person Cycles 1.4 times a day okay so that’s that’s that’s how it goes 10 times a week people ride a bike somewhere [Music] and I’m not even trying to be the guy who forces people or tells people what to do but the reality is do you know how much benefit it is when you cycle like dude you are doing so much good to your body like for me if I do cycle I’m going to go fast right but it’s not something that you have to do but you just moving them legs like bro like you’re doing a lot for yourself man like you got to do that [Music] this a very comfortable way of transportation above everything is very very economical so you don’t have to pay for buses or train than with a bike I go uh through downtown through the center of cronian and then I’m if I work when I use my car I have to go through the ring they call it here so it takes about I think half an hour and with my bike it’s 10 minutes you need to bik definitely because you needed to go to university you needed to go to party you can transport everything on the bike so you see people here riding like you can even transport the fridge if you want to then you put the fridge on the back of the bike and you just push the bike but it will bring it somewhere [Music] somehow that’s crazy we went to Central Station ofan we call it h St main station and we’ve got three different places where you can park your bike now we’re just in front of the what we call STS balcon uh Town balcony you can call it a parking lot for bikes ain’t that crazy with a free parking place for round about 5,000 bicycles it’s free you don’t have to pay uh but people are looking after it so it’s a kind of a of a guarded bicycle Park all the place have got a sensor the stats balcony is uh diverted in different areas a b CDE e f g when you see the sign over there it shows you how much places are still free but the one over here on the right hand side that’s the formal bicycle parking which is a guarded one you have to pay for it just for a day ticket a month ticket and it’s open till the last train arrives in groning around about 2:00 at night and then we farther back uh we’ve got what we call a bicycle flat which is uh free but is nobody who uh looks after it and on the south side of the station there are also parking places and so the total amount of bike parking facilities is round about 10,000 and in the weekend it’s all full that’s an no feeds that’s the shared bicycle system in the Netherlands and you can pick up those bicycles at I think it’s 340 stations now around the country country and so it’s probably the biggest Bike Share system in the world now it’s intended for people whove used public transport so the idea is that if you have cycled to the railway station in your own town and then you’ve taken the train and then you can use one of these bikes at the other end as the other part of your commute why ride a bicycle because it’s much easier than uh taking the bus and the car is way to expensive to have in a city I mean the infrastructure is great there’s bicycle L everywhere I’m just being honest with you public transportation is cool and everything I always heard you know how Europeans Flex state public transportations but let’s be real right public transportation has nothing on freaking cycling it it has nothing cycling is free dude you do not burn anything right public you can you can say public transportation messes up the you know environment pollution and whatever cycl does not do that in fact cycling is going to let you lose them little toxins that you got all up in your body that’s what Zing going to do and you ain’t got to pay the cycle you just got to pay a little penny like you got bikes that are mad expensive you got you got some bikes that are like $112,000 right but you got bikes that be selling like for $ 25500 so it’s much better so yeah that’s basically the reason I ride my bike uh everywhere but I have to go so goodbye good luck F have fun you’re not going to get a cycling Revolution by having a few 30 kmph streets you’re not going to get it by building just a few cycle paths and you’re not going to get it by traffic cing just a few streets either you have to do everything and you have to do it everywhere you never have to ride more than a few hundred meters from your home in the Netherlands in order to find yourself on a facility of such quality that you will be happy to cycle on it and you’ll be happy for your children to cycle on [Music] it we’ve tried to make new areas around the town within a boundary of say 5 till 7 kilm and not that we’ve spread all the new areas far away from the Town Center out of a point of uh of a compact City and the mobility aspects it’s much better taking the bike or walk into the town uh instead of using the car and this bridge is one of the projects which give you the opportunity to use the bike or go uh on your fi to the shops which are on the other side so it’s a very easy and quickest way to go from the new area over here and to go to the area down there not using your car but go on the bike employers must submit to the local Authority um a a plan a scheme a set of ideas what are they doing in order to encourage their employees not to use Motorcars and this can come in all sorts of forms it could be they do no more than put in some covered bike parking and some showers or lockers but some places have offered free public transport others have offered a bonus to people that say they’re not using their Motorcars um so the idea is to discourage this Ika is one of the largest in the world it’s the largest this side of Berlin so there is also a lot of car parking but the cycle parking here is still quite generous here you can see this is special cycle path just right into the entrance we go straight on and we cycle just right into the shop although it’s summer as you can see how much people are using the bike going to the Ika that’s a lot I presume that maybe in the next couple of years they will put I’ve never seen like half of what is right here I’ve never seen that pile up in fact if I’m if I’m honest I’ve seen you know like since obviously I live in Finland um I’ve seen you know like where they have the apartment I’ve seen like a couple bikes there you know like a a a lot a lot not not not like this much but I’ve seen like a lot probably I’d counted up probably say about 30 bikes right that’s that’s Max what I’ve seen this is crazy numbers some more this is the uh parking place for the Employments of of Ika and you can see that uh uh most of them are coming on the bike and use the the bike place to park the bike yeah I think it’s great cuz one you say save room for the customer because they we don’t park there and if you have an private Stelling place it encourages people to go on their bike it’s quite common to see students moving house with these because there were 50,000 students in Kia and you can hire these for just 250 an hour and so people will hire one of these to move house so you’ll see students riding through the town with all of their worldly Goods on the uh back Feats you’re growing up with the bicycle when you are 3 years old in Holland you learn how to bike and it’s easy you are uh quick everywhere uh I’ve used to uh go on bicycle it’s cheap it’s good for the health for your movement and handy handy yeah yeah greetings bye in the car you’re always alone and on the bike it’s funny you inter interact with other people on the street you talk you laugh you can even study for an exam on the way to the to the campus you all over with the bicycle you go there you go there with car you can’t do that you can’t park here you can’t park or you get F police here oh it’s an or one thing you’ll find that’s very apparent when you’re here is that it is almost completely silent this is the quietest City that I’ve ever ridden a bike in or been in for example this street you could stand in the roadway for minutes at a time without seeing a car the reason why it’s Pleasant to cycle here is because the infrastructure removes conflicts and so you don’t have people cycling in close proximity to fast cars or large trucks not terribly often anyway we have to have deliveries to a center like this but we don’t have through traffic in a place like this and so this is relatively peaceful and by having the street as a street mainly for bicycles as this is we have enormous numbers of people using the street able to get to the shops we can make the whole place look more attractive so the first thing you see when you come out of the train station is this massive bike parking structure the Taxi St and is located away from the front of the station over there that very small parking lot that’s where you can get a taxi you don’t have taxis jostling for customers if you want a taxi you have to go and seek it out okay well we are here in the Northwestern part of kingan the cor it’s built in the 1930s and behind me you will see the canal which is the fenor canal is the canal which leads from Amsterdam to uh Germany so it’s an important Canal a lot of ships are here the whole day and the whole night it’s open 24 hours 6 days a week behind here is a suburb area with a lot of young people with long young children they all have to go to work go to school they have to pass the bridge 13,000 cyclist each day will pass this bridge it’s an old bridge it’s a swing Bridge it will open sometimes 10 minutes so it will take a long long time when you can pass that means that we have made this separate Bridges which you can use when the bridge is open so you never can say when you have to go to school well I’m late because the bridge was open it gives you options some people will wait some people uh take the the bridges just behind the the swing bridge in the morning hour you might see that a lot of people will use the the the separate bridge to go to their work but when you go home and you think well I’ve had been working for a long day I will wait [Applause] [Music] there are so so many things that have been done to improve livability here in Ronan as you have seen everything is attainable by bike through smart Transportation Planning all obstacles have been removed and the result is a beautiful city that’s quiet and healthy and fun and pleasant like say if you want to go to the movie theater there are hundreds of bike parking spaces out front and hundreds more protected in the garage out back but that’s just something that’s not remarkable in the Netherlands wow look at the quality of the pathways throughout the city the brick pavers are flawless in spots it’s hard to find a defect anywhere or a spot where it’s uneven maintenance is a priority because they want people to have a smooth ride that’s because the city does not encourage traveling by car and thus the money they save they can continue to to build beautiful places that you can walk on and bike on and take transit on and yes even drive your car when you need to and a bicycle isn’t considered to be a like I’m just being real with you like as a guy who loves cars I I love cars like I love them a lot they’re not menant for cities like why would you drive your car in the city like why like if you have a car you’re supposed to be driving like for like that drive that you’re driving should be around 2 hours bro like for real like I don’t see why you’d be in a car just for you know 15 minutes I really don’t see it like why would you be like if you’re going to the grocery storees you’re trying to get groceries I get that right because we got to stack up and we got to bring it to the spot right but if we just if we just going somewhere to meet somebody like 15 minutes you going to be in a car for 15 well technically if you’re in a car for 15 minutes you’d probably be on a bike ride for 30 minutes so I understand that but anything close by I just don’t see why you drive I just don’t see it just hit that bike strange toy it’s not a sporting object it’s a simple method of transportation you no longer you don’t think about cycling any more than you think about your feet when you’re walking well we came here because we look for the best place in the world to cycle and uh therefore we ended up looking at FL again because when you’ve looked at everywhere that there is there is simply nowhere quite like this so because using your bike you can go in the town have a drink like the students behind me or go to the town go to the market go to your work go to see your friends so it’s a a mode of Transport that keeps you alive [Music] thanks yeah that’s kind of crazy though but that’s really cool because a city that is you know bicycle friendly to the highest level where you literally have such a hard time driving that’s that’s a beautiful thing I definitely would actually enjoy my time in a city like this like why not walk like if you don’t walk or cycle how are you going to see everything you’re going to just be moving way too fast and just won’t go the way it’s supposed to go so I really agree with this and like I said before like if you got a car like that like that joint should be used for you know far distance not close distance but um yeah thank you guys for watching this video I’m out of here peace

  1. bikes are making a comeback man, especially with all these electric bike/electric conversion kits… cars are too expensive nowadays, ya gotta pay for a license, insurance, gas, general upkeep, parking spots bruuuuuuuh all that and ya cant even go over 30mph/48kmh lmfao

  2. It is a good thing to see people who get the change to see other possibilities to make life easier, pleasant and better. No obligations, no force to do the same just plain what other countries achieved. FOREIGN is one of the few who is in a position who can see all of what can be achieve. As a subscriber of FOREIGN I wish you ALL the best outside the States of America and realise your plans/dreams to become true. Thanks reading my comment. Thumbs up to you.

  3. Not that I want to diminish Groningen (I love Groningen) but everything this video shows is the standard across all of The Netherlands. Not special to Groningen, but oh perhaps the traffic light that gives priority to cyclists if it rains, haven't heard that exists in other places …

  4. In NY they saw the light, and are seriously making it happen, so people can safely use a bikelane. With us in the Netherlands it did take decades to perfect it. But if every city or town will promote it and facilitate it, I'm pretty sure you guys will use bikes a lot more as well

  5. My city! Such a great place for cycling and the city keeps moving and keeps improving its infrastructure constantly. I don't own a car and use my bike all the time. Come for a visit in the spring, it's lovely!

  6. we pay for water in restaurants and we pay for toilet use ( there is a free option always ) but we safe on gasoline , parking fee and time ! best deal ever !!

  7. In Tilburg you even have handicap stickers for tricicals. Bicycles which are parked wrong are towed. The ones with a handicapped sticker are exempt. And can't be touched by the parking enforcement.

  8. The Netherlands has thousands of years of history and livable cities have always been here, apart for the 30 years that we let the cars dominate, never again!
