Karlín is a cadastral area of Prague, part of Prague’s 8 municipal district, formerly an independent town (which became part of Prague in 1922). It is bordered by the river Vltava and Holešovice to the north, Vítkov Hill and Žižkov to the south, New Town to the west, and Libeň to the east. The building of the Karlín district began in 1817, surrounding the Rosarium of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. The new settlement was named after Caroline Augusta of Bavaria, the fourth wife of Emperor Francis I of Austria.
After demolishing the city walls, the properties in Karlín were counted among the cheapest properties in Prague. For that reason, industrial enterprises and dwellings proliferated in the “Rohan Island” (Rohanský Ostrov). On January 1, 1922, Karlín was incorporated into Prague. At this time, the electrical engineering pioneer and industrialist František Křižík had significant influence in the area. He established a streetcar line, which he then sold to the city.
In the 1970s, traffic was rerouted onto the Rohanské nábřeží, and the main arterial road was relieved. Since 1990, Karlín has been connected to the Prague Metro, and a pedestrian zone has been established. In 2002, Karlín was severely affected by the 100-year flood. It has since recovered and is becoming a new destination for businesses and residences.

Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius (Czech: Kostel svatého Cyrila a Metoděje) is a Roman Catholic church in the Karlín district of Prague, Czech Republic. It belongs to the most significant religious buildings in the Czech Republic. It was constructed in the mid-19th century and remains one of the country’s most important architectural landmarks from the period of historicism. The Church was built in 1854–1863 to plans by architects Carl Roesner and Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann. Several Czech and Austrian artists contributed to the decoration of the Church, led by František Sequens and Josef Mathias Trenkwald. The Church was consecrated on October 18, 1863, on the millennium anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius to the Bohemian lands. The Church was constructed in the late Neo-Romanesque style as a basilica with a highly elevated central nave and two towers. The ground plan contains an entrance hall, three naves, and a presbytery with a semicircular apse between two chapels under the towers. The last decoration of the baptismal chapel was finished in 1905 in an art nouveau style.

    1. I see trees of green

      Red roses too

      I see them bloom

      For me and you

      And I think to myself

      What a wonderful world

      I see skies of blue

      And clouds of white

      The bright blessed day

      The dark sacred night

      And I think to myself

      What a wonderful world

      The colors of the rainbow

      So pretty in the sky

      Are also on the faces

      Of people going by

      I see friends shaking hands

      Saying, "How do you do?"

      They're really saying

      I love you

      I hear babies cry

      I watch them grow

      They'll learn much more

      Than I'll ever know

      And I think to myself

      What a wonderful world

      Yes, I think to myself

      What a wonderful world

    2. The great thing about Prague is that it emerged from the Second World War virtually unscathed. This is in contrast to many other European cities.

My city, Amsterdam, also remained virtually undamaged.

I like to walk with my camera through my neighborhood that dates back to the 1930s.

    3. Ahoj! I like this part of Karlin too. The Church is very beautiful. I loved the colourful building with the bridge that connects the new Karlin with the older part.

    4. Hi Vladimir! What a difference this walk! I definitely prefer the New Karlin. The old one reminds me of old Žižkov or Vysočany neighborhoods built for the working class. The church and the school building are pretty but I would live in New Karlin for sure😀

    5. What a magnificent city. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I enjoyed the scenery so much. Hope you had a lovely time. Have a wonderful day! Greeting from IRAN 🇮🇷 ❤
