Cycling the world – Europe: episode 86 – Camino de Santiago by bike
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the French village where the Camino de Santiago (known in English as Way of St James) officially starts. It’s only one of the several routes that leads to Santiago de Compostela however this is the most famous way to get to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great at the city’s main cathedral. It’s also known as the French Way. I got to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port a few hours after my action cam was stolen in Biarritz, a ride of about 60Km under constant pissing rain mostly uphill. The rain surely didn’t cheer me and once I got to the village, I was overwhelmed by the amount of people, walkers, tourists, and rain. In a terrible mood I decided I could just as well continue and start the Camino de Santiago right away, aiming to get to Roncesvalles on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees before night. Another 25Km climb. That’s pretty much how I started my Camino: wet, miserable, and feeling sorry for myself. Mood and weather improved the following day.
