I housesit all over the world and when I’m there I try to be as local-y as possible. My favorites are being in cycling cities and getting to borrow bikes!

hey what’s up this is my first ride in denha or the hague in the netherlands and what we’re gonna very quickly get up to is the first time somebody almost takes me out on a bicycle in europe um you notice the tram tracks and he was in the way and my bike tire got caught in the tram tracks and it really looks less dramatic on a gopro because it auto stabilizes but i assure you that i almost ate so much on a bike i had ridden for the first time that i didn’t own in a city within an hour of entering that city anyway this is the hague it’s the third largest city in the netherlands after amsterdam and rotterdam and you’ll notice that the infrastructure for biking is a little bit different than in copenhagen and you can see the bike path is red on the sidewalk for pedestrians is like a tan color and the street is asphalt colored so it’s really clear where you’re supposed to be on a bike even all the way through intersections it’s red um it’s very easy to understand so that’s really nice when you don’t know what you’re doing so we’re going to cut out this stop light and take a left turn you know when you’re driving a car and you get stuck behind somebody in the right lane and everybody passes you on the left and you can’t get around them this is my life right now but we’re sped up and i got around him anyway you might notice um that they’re actually three separate roads so i’m on a bike path next to me is a car path in the middle was the tram so instead of having a bunch of streets where people intersect and it might be dangerous they’re actually completely separate except for intersections where you’d have to take a left obviously it’s not that separated on smaller roads but it’s pretty cool that that’s how it is on the big roads and here i don’t actually know where i’m going i’m actually following a pinpoint on whatsapp to meet my homeowners riding around people is a great test of your patients because they don’t pay any attention and this hefty city bike i’m on could easily run a couple of them over but let’s go park and meet our homeowners all right i met them they’re awesome people we did some things had ice cream time to head home but we’re gonna go a different way um that meanders a little bit more because the first half don’t hit me please the first half was i don’t know just a straight shot and not nearly as interesting so we’re going to bounce around the edge of the city or of the center of the city and we’re going to follow these guys for a little bit and hang a left one thing i’ve adjusted to here is the fact that um in the city bikes just don’t really stop for red lights or stop signs if there’s no traffic um i’ve stopped at him when i first got here and people just blow past me so now i run stop signs and red lights as well we’re going this way because google maps told me to but but i’m pretty sure that bikes aren’t supposed to be here but it’s just for a moment everybody will be okay i’m very careful there’s a tram that went by in front of us and crossed some crosswalks hang a little right you really might be tempted to watch all these biking videos that i’ve been doing and be like oh andrew i can’t do this you must be in great shape you would be greatly mistaken i’m in terrible shape but the reality is is that places like denmark and the netherlands are extremely watch out little girl are extremely flat um the biking is really easy and it’s really relaxing and i mean honestly it’s just the it’s just the best way to see the city you know this is the third largest city in the country and look how empty the bike paths are and even when they are congested you know it’s just not a big problem you know i rode through the middle of the city and it wasn’t a big problem um i really can’t say enough that if you get the opportunity to visit you know somewhere in the netherlands somewhere in denmark rent a bike spend the money on it it’s worth it it’s a great experience i’ve watched some cycling videos and i’ve seen people talk about how copenhagen is superior to the netherlands but they’re really comparing copenhagen to amsterdam and amsterdam has just an ungodly amount more traffic than you’re seeing here um i really think that the biking here in the hague is much better and much easier than it was in copenhagen not that it was difficult there it’s just that much better here and we made it back home safely you probably should subscribe to my channel and watch some other videos because you’re already here why not

    1. The Hague is an average cycling city by Dutch standards. The cities of Utrecht, Groningen, Den Bosch and Zwolle for instance have superior infrastructure for bikes. But the greatest difference with other countries is the network philosophy in The Netherlands. Every city and town in the country is connected with each other with good infrastructure.
