Hello friends! Today we are in the pretty port town of Honfleur in the Calvados, Normandy region of France. Honfleur began in the 11th century and has changed hands between England and France multiple times during the Hundred Year War. It flourished on trade with it’s strategic location at the mouth of the Seine during the 16th to 19th century. Wealthy Honfleur families built their homes around the Vieux Bassin as a status symbol resulting in the picturesque harbor that still stands today.
Honfleur was supplanted as a port by Le Havre in the 19th century, becoming instead a resort favored by artists and writers. The École de Honfleur which was founded in the town by landscape painters and is credited with contributing to the appearance of Impressionism.
Today, this is a very popular tourist destination and still a favorite of painters. I hope you enjoy the walk. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
