The KSAT 12 News Team provides a look at local, regional, statewide and national news events and the latest information on local traffic and weather issues.

the news at noon starts right now new today at noon the CDC encouraging more people to learn to swim the numbers are alarming they were just rep released rather in a new drowning study speaking of swimming some popular summer spots are closed what you need to know as you look for places to cool off this summer and you’re going to need some options because it’s getting hot and it’s getting hotter still later on in the week but at least there is some rain in the forecast outside with live cam it’s already 85° that we are in for it yeah that’s a little warm yesterday we got up to 94 guys so uh yeah we’re in a hot stretch here today is going to be no different I think we’ll get those temperatures back up into the low 90s now some good news we have a little lower temperatures tomorrow because we have clouds and rain chances in the forecast that’ll be the case Friday too before things really ramp up by the weekend so let’s go outside for you once again 85 southeasterly winds at 10 mph now that’s a problem because it’s starting to bring in more moisture and more humidity so it feels like 88 when you factor in that humidity and it’s uh it’s only going to get worse as we go forward afternoon forecast today we’re going to be up around 93 there is a a warm up uh over the next several hours to around 92 81 and 9:00 73 overnight but we are going to add in a 20% chance of some showers and storms we’ll watch what goes on out west some of that activity could make its way towards s Antonio overnight and into tomorrow uh we could see a messy commute coming up tomorrow morning as well something will watch and uh also we’ll watch for that small window of storms with hail being the main threat tomorrow uh there’s a quick look at the polling count to uh with molds high today 4,150 grasses low at 20 we’ll talk much more about this forecast those rain chances in the storm chances coming up tomorrow guys and as Justin is talking about it is Heating up for many some of the popular swimming holes may not be what they hope few of those spots may not be good options right now the river at Paradise Canyon has very low water since the lakes that feed into it are seeing low levels however the swimming hole is available for swimmers since it is spring fed meantime Jacob’s Well has suspended its summer season due to another bout with low water levels and Hamilton Pool it’s closed for swimming due to recent rain and the threat of high bacteria levels but there are plenty of other options all around South Central Texas and Beyond right now on kat.com we’ve got a rundown of places you can cool off the list includes the popular Blue Hole in Wimberly as well as state parks and pools you can find the story in things to do on kat.com and while a lot of us are heading for those open Waters and it may come naturally a summer approaches for others this can be a scary time of year take a look at this the CDC says that drowning deaths are up for the first time since 2019 more than 4,500 people died due to Drowning each year from 20120 to 2022 and 40 million adults right now don’t know how to swim it’s an issue yeah and here’s some more pretty interesting figures for you 45% of all adults have had lessons no lessons for 55% of adults and you can see that Hispanics only have 28% of his Hispanics have actually had swimming lessons but there is help for those who need it as you check out this chart we had over 5,000 um actually 5,500 um who learned swimming lessons at the YMCA and uh 625 of those um were given classes uh for free so we do offer scholarships um those safety round water classes um are offered throughout the summer starting in May um for free to anybody go ahead making swimming lessons accessible can save lives and that’s the point the CDC wants to drive home coming up today at 5 and 6 Eric arenes is going to take a close look at what’s being done here in our community to encourage more adults to go ahead and learn how to swim and happening right now Community blood drive on the northeast side of town the goal is to fight the significant drop in blood donations during this time of the year the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center says blood donations typically decreased by 25% during the summer months today’s blood drive is happening at the Jordan Ford dealership that’s off of I35 near live o it ends at 4: this afternoon and as a way to boost donation participants between now and July 13th are going to win a chance to get a paid 2-year lease on a car right now on the southide you might be hearing a bit of commotion but there is nothing to worry about the San Antonio police bomb unit is trading but they’re using live explosives so for people who live near Loop 410 in morson Avenue you’re going to be hearing booms the training started at 10:00 this morning it set to end at 1 this afternoon so if you hear any loud explosions don’t worry it’s just the bomb squad that is training for some real life situations so what’s happening in central Med that is a question we’ve heard several times recently Cas said viewers have called us asking about Central Med’s recent computer system issues centr Met has acknowledged it is having some network issues on its website with a link to a network system issue update which states Central Med is currently operating with restricted access to our Information Network of course that has some patients pretty concerned I got a text at 8:30 at night that was on a Thursday night that it was cancelled and that they would reschedule my employment but I was in in pain from my from my hand yeah some of the calls we received asked whether any patients personal information is at risk we are still working to get the answer to that question did seoa leadership order the former head of their nonprofit to fabricate meeting records years after the fact that is an allegation being made by Dr Amanda Gonzalez who resigned as executive director of blue cares earlier this year in order to run for office the records disput surrounds blue car’s push last summer to qualify for charitable Bingo dispersements sapoa president Danny Diaz denied these allegations and said the association eventually abandoned the application after determining Gonzalez had not been properly maintaining meeting minutes all she did was let us know that she wasn’t doing part of her job that she should have been doing coming up at 6:00 Diaz explains supposed decision not to endorse Gonzalez or anyone for that matter in that race for Bear County Precinct one commissioner a local nonprofit that supports on average over 1,400 children in foster care each year through advocacy has a newly renovated campus where children can feel safe learn and play Tiffany wus takes us to the neglect call 911 or the child abuse hotline the phone number 1 18002525400 the NBA draft combine is underway since the Spurs have two picks out of the first top 10 they are really looking at all kinds of options and different players coming up another piece of uh public fun now ready to be enjoyed this noon we have a look at the new mural downtown and the story behind it [Music] the next phase of a project to expand Interstate 35 through elevated Highway Lanes is now officially underway the goal to ease your congestion on this busy stretch when you’re driving by it affects the parts of I35 that intersect with Wiman Road Eisenhower Road and walsom Road this portion of the project costs about $700 million it’s the second of five phases tech. has planned along i3 in our area it’ll be done in 2028 that’s the target we have more information on kat.com and we got a reminder for you that today is the deadline for those trying to protest their property appraisals here in bar County and that means you have to let the county know today that you plan to appeal the quickest way to do that is all online we’ve got links on kat.com events and programming for San Antonio’s bike month celebration taking shape across the city during this month Advocates and organizers aim to show case the benefits of cycling tonight is the international ride of Silence it’s now in its 22nd year and it honors cyclists who were killed or injured on the roads and those taking part in the ride in uh that silent procession wearing white shirts the ride goes for nine miles it starts at Main Plaza participants were encouraged to meet there at 6:30 tonight and we have more information on kat.com and speaking of Main Plaza you are looking at a mural that was just completed not too long ago it celebrates the Girl Scouts as they mark 100 years here in San Antonio the mural features several well-known former Girl Scout includes Layla cockro she was the first woman elected mayor of San Antonio depicts armorie Joe Garza she was a girl scout Jr for 6 months before she was shot and killed at Rob Elementary School in New Valley taking a look outside with live cam it was I’m going to call it Pleasant this morning but I think that was a very shli feeling it was pleasant for you know 2 or three hours and now we’re starting to see those temperatures really crank up we in the mid 80s now end up in the ’90s this afternoon hey if you’re hearing a lot of people sniffling and sne sneezing which I I’ve heard a little bit of that in The Newsroom today uh it’s molds probably that are is what’s doing it right now they are high at 4,150 grass is low at 20 uh we’re going to take a look at some more rain chances ah had our way tomorrow the latest forecast for you coming [Music] up we want to get to some late breaking news from the coast a barge has hit a bridge in Galveston and it left some damage and it has caused an oil spill the bridge leads to Pelican Island it’s located just north of galvaston it was hit by a barge around 930 this morning and right now clu crews are working to clean it up but as you can see it’s taken out part of that bridge and that kind of is reminiscent of what happened in Baltimore yeah it doesn’t look like there’s much of the bridge that’s in the water but you can see that a that a section of it it’s hard to tell what it looks like those are railroad tracks that are next to the road but it’s hard to tell so hopefully that’s what it is and nobody’s in the water no bridge collapse pleas it doesn’t look like it as of right now all right we’ll keep an eye on that in the meantime we’re also keeping an eye on our rain chances for tomorrow yeah we’re keeping our fingers crossed I got to tell you it’s both it’s not one of those slam dunk situations we haven’t had any of those honestly or not many of them uh so far this year but there is the potential for some showers and storms tomorrow I want to take you outside first we’ll look at the temperatures 85 San Antonio we’re up to 87 in cville and sigin uh very rarely is cville the hot spot but that’s the way it’s going today humidity levels just a little bit lower there and that’s helping to boost the temperatures I think everybody gets into the 90s this afternoon that’s where we were yesterday that’s likely where we end up later today uh wind gusts uh they’ll start to pick up we’ll see winds in the range of 10 to 15 miles per hour but some gust maybe up to around 20 or so but the the key here is that these winds are out of the South and South East so that is helping to boost uh dupoint levels and we’ll see those du points uh really start to come up right now we’ve got dup points in the mid-60s that puts us in the muggy territory but look what’s off to the South you got due points in the 70s around Pleasanton and that more humid air is working its way up into San Antonio so it’ll get more sticky uh by this afternoon Hill Country is still looking at somewhat dry air and that’s why temperatures are a little bit warmer there our humidity forecast yes it comes up and really doesn’t go away unfortunately so we’re going to have high humidity muggy conditions through the foreseeable future all the way into next week and that’s going to be paired with some really hot temperatures so be prepared for some summer like heat coming up next week in the meantime today’s forecast 92 at 5:00 81 at 9:00 p.m. and we are going to add in a small chance for storm overnight uh thanks to the potential for some storms coming out of Mexico and moving towards our neck of the woods a little bit later today and into tonight this is 5:00 this model does show some showers and storms flaring up there just to the west of Del Rio and Eagle Pass now the question becomes will they hold together overnight I’m a little skeptical of that but this model does want to hold some of that rate on through 10:00 maybe into midnight so that’s why we do have some small rain chances in there uh we’ll keep tabs on it meteorologist Adam casy will be here tonight uh keep a close eye on that radar but as we get into tomorrow morning I think we will have a wet morning commute uh you’ll get showers and drizzle lining up around 7:00 and this will continue right on through midday this is when we start to see a little bit more shower activity and maybe some thunderstorms starting to take shape here now I think the best risk of storms will be to our North but even around 2:00 a couple storms possible and then some bigger storms off to our north and east that may scrape by as we get into Thursday night Friday morning and this model does bring a little bit more rain in Thursday night Friday morning so uh there are some chances there the highest risk for severe weather is to our North this orange color here but we are on the scale of one out of five so there is a small risk that we can see a couple strong storms even here in San Antonio 93 today 86 tomorrow 40% chance of rain 89 Friday 30% chance of rain I think that’s mainly in the morning and then beyond that look at these temperatures 96 Saturday 97 Sunday that’s with humidity and we’re going to be closing in on 100 before it’s all said and done early next week oh wow I hope we get some of that rain me too thank you that’s no good we don’t need hundreds we need some a really in-depth detailed serious what do you think question okay well first of all she was just kind of moaning and groaning take your mind off the weather for a second next week it is National chocolate chip day y chocolate chip cookie day o yes indeed so the question is how do you like your chocolate chip cookies there are the hard-hitting answers on your screen do you like them chewy cakey with nuts or cookie dough what do yall say I am a huge fan of fresh out of the oven gooey soft chewy with the milk yes indeed you like nuts in them or not doesn’t have to have nuts doesn’t have to have nuts but a good Toll House yep chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven with a little glass of milk nothing better in oh yeah that’ll cure with and you need a little chocolate chip running down your chin too so cuz it’s still warm and chocolate chips are kind of running tast not you Mike but you’re good you’re good T gra let us know let us know in wait a minute Ted’s getting cookies and there’s none here sorry oh yeah thanks you didn’t send any over sorry about that all right you’ll get more live here from historic Market twar at 1:00 I didn’t know my coaster had H had such a evil laugh it didn’t when did that where did that come from I cuz he’s cuz we didn’t get any cookies evil evil evil the Spurs getting a good look at a few prospects that might be interested in this coming draft and the missions are getting a little play time with some Dolphins at sew world coming [Music] up all right a lot of diamond action around here so let’s start with a check on local teams in the tap 6A Division One softball championship Antonio posted 10 runs but believe it or not it wasn’t enough overcome St Agnus Academy who patch you swept during the regular season Antonio Falls 14-10 finishes at the state runnerup for the third time in Four Seasons In Tap 68 D1 baseball semi-finals Center Catholic advaned the championship with a 3-2 win over St Pas the 10th the buttons scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second they held up Central Catholic will play the for the State title tomorrow in a rematch against Presswood Academy the buttons lost to them in the final a couple of years ago and the where getting closer a closer look at some of the players who could be available in the June draft now some of those guys taking part in the NBA Combine the Spurs had the fourth and the eighth overall picks this summer unlike last year there is not a really two consensus number one pick like the Spurs Victor wanyama fellow French big man Alex Zar is a projected top pick SAR doesn’t compare himself to wmy but agrees France has some Elite Talent we’re so much NBA games I see what they do but I don’t really compare myself to uh anyone in the league you know uh I think everybody plays a different type of role there’s a lot of lot of talent in France and uh just seeing all these young guys getting into the NBA just like me just like the teammate is going to do uh you know he shows the the place Mas war is in credits and I think our national team will really good yeah no comparing to wimy all right the missions took a little time from the diamond to Splash around with some bottle noos Dolphins at SeaWorld the players fed the Dolphins ask the Aquatic mammals to perform behaviors as well as gain some insight on how the staff cares for those Dolphins at SeaWorld’s rescue efforts it was all fun and smiles beforehand it was challenging though because they had to find some wet suits to fit all these guys they put on wet suits which it’s hard to find wet suits for guys that big but but we got them we got them in the water and they had the opportunity to meet some bottl no Dolphins they learned how we care for them they learned about our rescue efforts and of course they just had a lot of fun yeah that was a blast those things are a lot bigger than I thought um trainers did a great job uh I think we all enjoyed it I think the respect that the animals have for the trainers and the respect that the trainers have for the animals I think that was really cool uh seeing them interact and seeing how well well trained they are and responding to commands I think that was really cool uh I’d like to ask more questions about how they uh how they respond to that and how they learn those things um but it was a really cool opport learning opportunity well I’m sure they will be more than happy for you to come back SeaWorld bring your family friends and enjoy it and they’ll answer more questions where did they find the the wet suits I’d probably weigh in the back somewhere just in case the big and tall shop a new effort underway to protect you against those scam calls how it’s powered by artificial intelligence and after a lot of back and forth it seems a couple of debates will take place between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump and the first one is in just a few weeks we’ve got details coming up want to get you back to that late breaking news we told you about just about 15 minutes ago a barge hit a bridge in Galveston leaving some damage and an oil spill yeah you’re looking at uh this breaking news right now this is a bridge that leads to Pelican Island and that’s just north of galvaston you can see pieces of the bridge have come off of the bridge or hanging there it was hit by that barge at around 9:30 this morning we’re not really sure what caused that barge to hit the bridge looks like those workers are standing on what would be the roadway and that doesn’t look like it’s been affected that much but it does look like the stuff that’s hanging off that part of railroad track so hopefully that’s that’s all the damage that was done right now we don’t have any reports of any injuries as the crews start to clean up that mess in other news there has been a spike in women finally realizing they’ve been living with a mental health condition their whole Liv lives without a diagnosis we’re talking about ADHD diagnosis for adult women with the condition has doubled from 2020 to 2022 a woman with ADHD and a therapist who diagnoses it helped our Courtney Freeman learn how ADHD shows up in women a bit differently and what you can do if you suspect you have it I was doing a ton of things to accommodate my own ADHD I always have but Stephanie sheller didn’t realize that until 2015 when she was in her late the memory and attention issues became clear we need a lot more engagement than pretty much anyone else visually um tactile um auditory she did research conferred with doctors and started a company that creates events for people with ADHD to help them live their lives to the fullest sealing height impacts your ability to focus lighting impacts your ability to focus and sense impact your brain in all these different ways at her events sheller meets so many women who were also diagnosed later in life women tend to present differently with ADHD so we don’t tend to get the same like oh well you can’t sense still so we don’t get the diagnosis the tests were not built for us they were built for little boys that’s something psychotherapist Lindsay McGee he sees all the time when diagnosing ADHD in women it brings with it sometimes a lot of depression and anxiety and social problems so it can lead to other mental health issues that may be disguised as something else that is one of the main symptoms is in adult females the exhaustion because they’ve been working so hard to fit in to check all the boxes to get everything done she says the diagnosis can be difficult to hear and there is a sense of regret like I wish I had known but it’s almost always met with relief they like oh I can go to the doctor I can get medication I can go to therapy I can talk to other people who have it and feel like I’m not trying to fit in I actually belong that’s the type of community sheller is creating create a space where we could actually want start to normalize the stuff that we’re all doing a community she hopes more women will join once they’re tested and diagnosed no matter how old they are Courtney fredman kad2 news for the first time a new screening tool can identify pre ecsia during a pregnant woman’s first trimester lab court says it has developed a risk assessment to determine whether someone is more likely to develop the life-threatening complication preeclampsia can lead to seizure stroke pre-term birth and other serious outcomes however the new test may not be an option for women just yet lab core is still in talk with health insurance plans to see if they are willing to cover the $240 cost and there are some doctors that say the effectiveness of the test has yet to be proven in everyday practice Google Now working on a new AI powered scam call detection feature to protect Android users from phone scams the call monitoring feature is going to warn you if the person on the phone is likely attempting to scam you Android users are going to get alerts during the calls when red flags are detected encouraging you to end the conversation Google plans to announce more information on when the scam detection feature will be available later on this year a group of Tik Tock creators now suing the federal government over the new law that could lead to a ban of a popular app the legislation last month requires Tik tok’s current owners to sell it or else they’ll have to shut down here in the US meantime The plaintiffs Who filed the suit claim the law would keep them from creating and sharing expressive material through their chosen publisher content creators alleged this is government overreach and alleged the ban would lead to quote immediate and irreparable harm end quote this is the second law we filed against the government over the potential ban and that ban is driven by US security concerned about Tik tck’s china-based parent company bite dance the interest rates on new federal student loans is going up it’s going expected to hit in in fact a 12year high the upcoming 2024 2025 academic College year the interest rates for undergraduate student loans will rise above 6 and a half% that’s up from 5 and a half% for the current year the federal student loan interest rate has not been that high since the 2012 to 2013 school year both graduate students Plus Loans recipients are going to see an interest increase hike interest rate hike this academic school year there are some federal programs though that can provide borrowers relief on those interest rates you can find out more about that on student aid.gov We Make My Day pal I’ll even do it twice so let’s pick the dates Donald I hear you a lot of back and forth between the two presumptive presidential nominees with when it comes to debates former president Donald Trump said several times in the past anytime anywhere any debate monitor so today President Joe Biden challenged Donald Trump to pick a date to debate him the former president immediately accepted and now it looks like it’s going to happen CNN is now reporting that it will in fact host an election debate between the two candidates on June 27th in Georgia the second debate will be September 10th here on Cas at 12 all this comes after Biden pulled out of the traditional debate set up by the commission on presidential debates instead said he wanted news organizations to host the debates remember the first commission presidential debate was scheduled for Texas state in San Marcus in September that definitely puts that in limbo now in the latest hour we have received a statement from Texas State spokesperson that says they are working closely with the commission on presidential debates to assess that situation taking a live look outside it is a pretty day out there if you don’t look at the temperature ticking upwards ever so quickly yeah uh we’re going to be here close to 90 I think pretty soon so just prepare yourself good news we’ll get a little a little bit cooler weather coming up tomorrow thanks to some clouds and some rain and speaking of rain we still need it uh we’ve had some bouns of rainfall so far this spring but still not enough and I know we’ve been saying that for what feels like years now but uh we’re at 1196 for the year uh the normal is 10.48 or the average at least and so we’re still a little bit above average but not by much uh if you remember just a few months ago we had a a pretty good Surplus going and and that anymore Austin is above average as well Del Rio not doing so great 88 they’re about 4 in below average so some rain out there would be great there could be a few storms out towards Del Rio’s way this afternoon our rain chance is here in San Antonio we’re going to bring them up to 40% tomorrow 30% on Friday that’s the best we can do a lot of the action is going to be to our North but I think we will have some scattered showers and we’ll at least pick up a little bit of rain around here as we get into tomorrow uh today though not much rain Department 92 at 5:00 we’ll officially top out at 93 and look for some small rain chances showing up overnight with those better chances uh by tomorrow morning some drizzles some showers around for your Thursday morning commute we’ll time it out for you again we’ll look ahead to the weekend and talk temperatures too I don’t really want to but we got to that’s coming up here in just a couple minutes guys thank you Justin a free monthly concert series kicking off just this week and while locals might be excited about another entertainment option the city’s tourism department has bigger goals for this one outside with last G I’m not going to look at the temperature I’m just going to look at the sky see that’s a beautiful sky got it’s a beautiful day out there this view those are the kind of clouds seious clouds that don’t look so pretty during the day but at Sunset yeah they’ll be perfect we’ll have a really beautiful sunset T I get the cameras ready and uh snap a photo sent it in casac Connect that’s what we like to see uh 85 so far today the average is 86 okay so we’re going to be above average that’s a certainty uh the record is 98 that was that just 2 years ago in 2022 we won’t be there today but I tell you what we could be there by early next week we’re going to take a look at some of that potentially near record heat coming up [Music] so does this mean all the porches and all the um Outdoors restaurants are AR cranking up their little misters is that what this means yes yes it does okay uh I got I got to say it it uh does not take a long to start sweating out there no those patios get a lot of business for like six weeks out of the year right in the fall and the spring we have we just got to toughen up right Windows hey I still like sitting outside but I’m always cold but that’s neither here nor there uh the fact of the matter is May is starting to crank up the temperatures we were near average to start the uh the month uh we had a couple days there below average and those were rain days where we had rain coming down that kept things below average but yesterday 94 that obviously is above average we will be above average today we’ll see where we end up on Thursday with some rain hope is that maybe maybe we’ll be a little bit below uh but so far we’re running a little bit warm for the month of May and we’re halfway through by the way hard to believe uh here’s a look ahead now we know after Thursday things are going to go back up above average the average this time of year 86 uh we’re looking at 93 today Thursday right on the cusp uh but by Saturday and Sunday for sure we’re going to be back well above average into the mid the upper 90s and heat index values could be up close to 100 or above uh because humidity will still be around right now 84 in new Bron Falls 87 in Sig 86 Bernie 88 in kville it’s a war warm afternoon and everyone is now looking at a south or southeasterly wind which is as we talked about last half hour really starting to bring in the humidity and those du points are coming up uh we’ve got some clouds rolling in too these are mostly high clouds that are spreading in from the west and that’s why I think the uh sunset this evening should be very beautiful we’ll get some good colors uh with those kind of clouds coming through here’s the bigger picture and there’s not a lot going on across the country now Florida’s pretty busy they got some storms down there uh but nothing that jumps off the page what we’ll be watching is this low which is out near San Diego that’s going to be uh moving East pretty quickly and it will be here by tomorrow that’s going to give us lift here across the state of Texas and as we look at the future cast here by this afternoon we’ll start to see a few storms develop in the southwesterly flow a loft out in Mexico these storms will probably have a hard time holding together uh making it all way to San Antonio but there’s a possibility there the model have been hinting at this often times they just don’t they just don’t hold together but we’ll keep an eye on it I think by the time we reach San Antonio probably just be some showers uh but as we get into tomorrow morning showers become a little more likely uh we’ll get drizzle just overall damp weather to start Thursday and I think the showers become a little more numerous by midday by lunchtime and then we’ll start to see a couple thunderstorms develop early afternoon but then a lot of the focus shifts to the north and east and by dinner time we may not have much on the radar at least not here uh but as you get up to the north and east there certainly could be quite a few storms and then with a little battery coming through Thursday night and the Friday morning we can see a little bit more uh showers and storms on the radar the bulk of the heavy rainfall as I said it’s going to be up across East and Northeast Texas so places like Waco Tyler uh they’re going to pick up more than inch and a half of rain for us probably more in the order of a tenth of an inch at best and you’ll get lower numbers as you go out West so once again it’s East and Northeast Texas that really uh get to enjoy the heavy rainfall uh 86 tomorrow 40% chance of rain 30% Friday and then next week it is reminiscent of a summerlike pattern Ridge builds in and those temperatures as I said really start to rise we’re sweating in here just thinking about it MH all right a more than 30 million people visit our city a year and San Antonio draws a global crowd but what about those of us who live here visit San Antonio gearing up for the summer tourism crowd and they’re offering a free concert every month Patty Santos tells us the vision is to keep downtown San Antonio fresh and Lively and not just for the tourists but also
