This sunny summer climb starts in Andermatt in Central Switzerland at an elevation of 1400 m. Our goal today is to reach the peak of the Furka pass at 2436 m, completed by a descent to the hamlet of Gletsch next to the Rhone glacier. The ride follows the main road that also leads over the Gotthardpass until we reach Hospental. From here we take the Furka pass road. Once we reach Realp, the road starts to get steeper, with frequent switchbacks. We climb higher with occasional views on the Reuss valley, and the peaks of surrounding mountains such as the Furkahorn and the Gemsstock. After a long climb we reach the summit and continue to the famous Belvedere ice grotto and former hotel area. Have a look at the James Bond movie Goldfinger to see how far the Rhone glacier has receded since 1965. These days nothing but the exposed scars in the surrounding rock remain visible on this ride. We conclude with a wonderful descent to Gletsch with views on the Grimselpass – which can be found in a separate ride.
