Today I try to answer a question I’ve had for years. why do people in holland all ride the same bike.

So lets take a look at the “Omafiets” which Dutch for “grandma-bike” but this style of bike is not just for pensioners! This practical bicycle is very common in the Netherlands and is ridden by men and women of all ages.

[Music] I have a question that’s been bothering me for many many years why does everybody in Holland ride the exact same type of bike so the popular bike that is the Dutch bike or and I may be murdering this the omits which basically means Grandma bike is by far the most common bike you’ll ever see if you go to pretty much anywhere in Holland now I used to go out to Holland all the time I spend a lot of time in Amsterdam taking in the culture but I always thought like that one the placees absolutely ramp packed of bikes and I’d love to actually go there again soon and kind of like maybe go cycling cuz I’ve never done it to be honest I’ve never actually rode a bike in Holland uh which is probably quite surprising to anybody who watches my videos or knows me as a person but every time I was there I was always Blown Away by the fact that like everybody had the same kind of bike and don’t get me wrong some people ride different bikes there’s still people on road bikes at the weekend and stuff using them for support Sport and stuff like that but you don’t have the same thing that happens in London where in London you’ll have these people on these 8 Grand bikes commuting to work um they would be they’d be they just wouldn’t do that it’d be more of a you’d be riding your your om my feet um not your carbon road bike for commuting and getting round now don’t get me wrong there’s also retro bikes very similar to the type bikes we built on this trap channel uh for for example in Rotterdam you’ve got shio Rook uh who is this guy here this is awesome shop which I will definitely come and visit you soon I say soon one day I’ll come and visit you and look at your bikes um but like I say they make some amazing retro bikes very similar to what we do on this uh channel so there’s obviously a market out there for other bikes as well but for the purpose of today’s video and kind of what we’re talking about it’s more about these om fits and why they’re so popular so let’s start off number one which is Comfort these bikes are very kind upright the the way I describe it is very much like sitting in a chair um maybe even in that comfy armchair because the seats are so padded and cushions you are very relaxed and it is a very comfortable upright position um the hammer bars are also sweep back so they’re nice and wide and kind of comfortable on your wrists so it is the most comfortable kind of ride going um most of these bikes if not all of them are 700 C or I imagine some are 650p especially more the modern ones um so but you can usually have reasonably big tires in there um and all around just Comfort is the key element here now I know what you’re thinking yeah but it’s not very efficient to ride a bike in that sort of position and you are right um but this is Holland we’re talking about possibly if not the flattest country in the world uh so there is no real Hills and if there is a hill it’s kind of like a there a little curb or a drop curb or something is not a hill uh so you don’t need that you literally need to be be able to get from A to B and the other thing with these bikes is the fact that because they are so comfortable you don’t need to ride cycling gear so if you are going to the work or going to meet some friends being if to just wear whatever clothes you want and not have to worry about being in comfortable cycling clothes is they’re comfortable Comfort the next thing I want to talk about was the kind of practicality of these things um most of the ones that I’ve seen in the wild usually have a rack on the front and the one that we’re using in this video here does have mounts on the front you can easily put a big rack on the front for carrying bags and shopping and things like that they’re also step through which are becoming one of my favorite kind of bikes this year uh me and toasty have been talking a bunch about step throughs and um I can guarantee you there is a step through build coming in the Retro side of this channel uh and uh we will be doing something very cool of it very soon so do make sure you subscribe if you want to see more bike builds and uh there’s a very cool let’s it’s going to be the PB bike or the ultimate PB bike it’s extremely fun to make you don’t want to miss it but step throughs and it kind of goes back to that Comfort element and I think Comfort is going to be something I’m going to say over and over again in this video um but the way that they are step through they give you the ability to wear whatever you want some women even wear skirts or dresses I mean don’t have to be women a guy can wear a skirt and a dress if he likes as well and you can get on and off that bike nice and easily usually at this part of the video I’ve usually said something about the bike and it kind of correlates to one of my stickers this one’s a little bit of a hard one but I’m going to try anyway and um a lot of these Dutch bikes have those racks and baskets like I mentioned uh and we have a sticker that says nice rack on it uh I think I’ve only got one or two of these left so if you’re Keen check out the website which is saveal bikes.com but there’s loads of other stickers on there as well and it really does help me do this channel uh so every sticker helps take 10c review um it’s very and [Music] at this point I should also address the bike that we’re using in this video which is the U2 by Isen wheel you can probably tell from the actual footage in this video but this is an ebike Dutch bike or a electric Dutch bike that’s a better way of saying it it’s electric Dutch bike it’s got a 350 W Motor almost 500 W hours of battery power and does around 20 mph in all these clips I’ve got it restricted to the 15 miles now it’s the legal limit in the UK um but if you are buying this bike somewhere else in Europe you can derestrict it and get it up to its full capacity the max range for this bike is around 50 Mi so it’s really quite good when it comes to what you can do on it uh the batter is really really quite large so you can charge it and use it for most of your commuting for the week if that’s what you’re doing on it but all around it’s a really nice bike and a big thank you to Isen World sending it out to us to play with oh if you’re actually into this bike and you want to check it out more there is a link below in the description including a discount code as well so the last two things things I wanted to talk about was the actual material they’re made out of and then the actual fact that they’re really low maintenance so Dutch bites generally are steel bikes they are kind of vintage retro style um even if they are made in recent times they often are still made up to that ex same caliber which is a steel frame lasts forever this is another reason why they’re comfortable as well which is let’s just face it these bikes are comfortable and that’s why you ride them like no matter what I say it all comes back to their comfort but in my opinion and a lot of people’s opinion steel bikes are way more comfortable just because of the way they flex and kind of absorb some of that radness that depending on where you are is rubbish especially in London Dutch bikes come in lots of different forms um but I don’t think I’ve seen many if any with a derer on the back of it they all either are single speed or Hub drum gearboxes uh which take next to no maintenance in the slightest which is obviously if it’s something you riding every single day the smallest amount of Maintenance that you need is the best thing simple as that so the last thing to mention is and I think why most people still ride these bikes is they are beautiful the way they are designed they they’re shaped and they just stand the test of time that’s why they’re still being made if you enjoyed today’s video do feel free to give it a little like below or comment let me know what you think of Dutch bikes why do you think they are ridden so much and not just in Holland by the way they are ridden all over the world um and why what do you think let me know in the comments below um and if you are into bike mods and builds that’s what we do a lot of round here and we’ve got some big builds coming up at the moment uh so do feel free to subscribe to the channel and if you can’t wait till the next video which will be weekly on Sundays that one there is a particularly good one [Music] oh

    1. Your first statement is not true; not every dutch person (only) rides a dutch bike. Also, an e-bike never will be a dutch bike in its core. You’ve kind of offended the dutch cycling culture at 20 seconds in.

    2. My 50s omafiets tyres are bigger than 700c they are 40-635 aka 28 inch by 1 1/2 also the only original parts are the frame and front mudguard 🙃 but i think they are popular here because of the low maintenance and step through frame (balls *cough*). Also the cheapest omafiets is like 250€ so its quite the affordable ride. And they are just sturdy af. I use mine for the weekly groceries:)

    3. Have you seen the japanese version of these ebikes made for commuters? They are very similar to this one and very popular in Japan. They also ride on the wrong side of road like in the UK. Not to mention the plug for charging, the european is much better 🙂!

    4. The music was pretty loud compared to your voice in this vid. If I lived somewhere without hills, I may consider something other than a mountain bike, or my current fat bike. 2020 Giant Yukon 2 with 27.5 x 4.5 tires. I'm converting a 1986 Miyata 710 from a road bike, to a more comfortable flat bar. Going from 3×7 with downtube shifters, to 1×9 indexed on the bar. I can't wait to get it going.

    5. As an englishman living in the netherlands I can tell you you have a lot wrong in this video 😂 A proper "Oma fiets" is getting very rare! They were decent thick wall steel bikes with strong rims and spokes. Only a rear brake "Terug trap rem" back pedal brake. Do not need brakes here red lights are'nt for cyclists 😆 They mostly have strong sturdy racks at the rear and sometimes also on the front. The "replicas" you see most now are cheap chinese rip offs with no where near the same robustness and quality. For the majority of the Dutch a bicycle is nothing other then a means of transport when they have to much tipple or have to get a train🤣🤣🤣

    6. The omafiets got me into riding bikes again. The step through frame, the upright sitting position and the ease of single speed was just amazing for me living in a city. I rode that bike 100kms a week for my work commute and treated it like crap but it lasted a surprisingly long time! If you live in Canada there are a few businesses that hold omafiets for as low as 250 CAD. Well worth the money

    7. As a Dutchman watching this video I am wondering… why the ** is she wearing a helmet when she’s just commuting??? Literally nobody in the Netherlands does that.
