France by Bicycle | PART 4: THE LOIRE A VELO: CHAMBORD

We begin Chapter 4 by visiting the Chateau De Chambord, a tourist spot that graces many a travel poster, although Roland and Julianna opt to tour the grounds instead of the full tour, which is what Victor and Nadia choose. then we ride north back to the Loire A Velo, and the Eurovelo 6. We follow the Loire to Blois, a magnificent city with an equally magnificent history and an awesome bridge over the river. From there, its up the Loire Valley to Amboise, another in a long string of amazing French cities, with a great Chateau and ties to none other than Leonardo Da Vinci.

[Music] how do you tell if this is running or not [Music] [Music] we’re on our way to Chambord we’re gonna go see the big Palace big castle so this path into the castle involves a little bit of gatekeeping okay pretty little Forest going through here huh there’s my sugar good morning baby good morning my love on our way to Shem board yep there’s so much simple beauty around here kind of stuff money can’t buy in each this kind of stuff feeds my soul so there’s our first view of Chambord one of those classic chateaus of the Loire Valley maybe the classic Chateau of the Loire Valley and it’s a beauty I saw the other half lives huh I want a house like this Chambord is a one in a million Palace set in the Virgin Countryside just south of the Loire building began in 1519 the dream of Francois the first who apparently was a passionate patron of the Arts it stands as one of the most classic representations of the French Renaissance so as you can see a lot of this Chambord Chateau is being renovated rehabilitated a lot of renovation going on here what a what a structure what a building beautiful you’re you’re all right I I know this problem yeah so one of the problems that you run into when you’re bike touring is you know you come to a place like Chambord you might want to check it out but you’ve got to park your bike and you’ve got all your painters and there’s about 10 000 people going around there’s no security for all your stuff you’ve got it’s your entire trip packed in bags they have little places where you can lock your bike away but there’s just no security at all so it can be a problem so Victor and Nadia I decided to go ahead and do a tour of the castle Juliana is checking out the gift shop and I’m just kind of sitting here people watching staying cool in the shade and keeping my eye on the bikes so Juliana just came back from the gift shop and got herself a nice new hat which I assume says yeah yeah at least it’s not the Eiffel Tower yeah works in the sun nice you got some protection I forgot my other hat so you can always sport it around the house so it’s one that you can so while Victor and Nadia toured the castle Interiors we were content to ride around the grounds going on I think we got it on construction so we got some Cubist trees here never seen that before beautiful gardens but boy it is really really touristy but I guess one would expect that here it’s it’s on travel posters forever [Music] some wife huh sure he’s treated very well leaving Schaumburg through this beautiful network of bike trails that cuts through the forest very lovely although the Chateau was a major draw for the entire Loire Valley and by all means an excellent stop for those so inclined Juliana and I didn’t feel disappointed to miss the tour in all honesty the ostentatious wealth in such a Grand Old World manor house is a bit overwhelming to both of us and we were content with just appreciating the architecture from a distance so we pointed our bikes back towards the Loire in the direction of the city of blueah along winding quiet roads that led us through a paradise a Vineyards Villages and rolling Vistas foreign look at this little place they got horses chickens hair trees and they have beehives with the beautiful little chateau this is like my dream property just simple Elegance I would love this and right on a stream wow I think we got only got about seven miles to go Victor seven or eight I think or less yeah riding into blue wall blue wall riding into Boi on a beautiful series of trails just lovely very magical afternoon [Music] Juliana’s trying to feed the salons but she can’t get down to them so another another wild vowel has been saved [Music] foreign proved to be as easy on the eyes as it is difficult to pronounce with a grand entrance across the river on the Jacques Gabriel Bridge built in the early 1700s it’s the oldest bridge in blue eye in the first of the great modern bridges that crossed the lowar yeah it’s great [Music] Loire was the seat of the king of France during the Renaissance and its colorful and often bloody history goes back to pre-roman times today it glowed under a breezy sky e [Music] oh [Music] yeah [Music] let me tell if this is running or not here’s the view outside our hotel room in the wall is that Sky wow it’s not bad the city proved to be a wonderful town to explore packed with delightful discoveries everywhere you looked foreign in the morning we headed straight to a bike shop hoping to repair Juliana’s rear wheel which had been causing her some problems before bidding a dew to this lovely City it’s a gray cool morning expecting a lot of rain we’re going to try to get to amboi before the rain hits how you doing this morning baby doing good just had our first cup of coffee it’s uh probably a little afternoon and uh we’re raring to go got it only about maybe 25 30 miles but uh bike shop today my rear wheel was bent I had to get a whole new wheel and it’s now not tubeless so I can’t use my toothless anymore on my rear wheel but riding a lot better now so glad we got it checked out and got my brakes adjusted it’s always something minor you got to keep up on in this case it wasn’t that minor it was dragging her down with every pedal stroke it was rubbing so it was really slowing down her roll yeah glad we got it taken care of yeah hey let me catch up with these guys okay good morning it’s really good afternoon but it’s a good morning anyway really yeah I didn’t have another interview until Tuesday we were waiting for Nadia to finish one of her interviews she’s applying for new jobs here in Europe very important but she kills it she’s the bomb so she’s gonna get something soon all right and I need a good morning from Victor good morning Victor how you feeling this morning awesome all right here we go Happy Trails let’s ride we’re following the highway for a little bit but now we seem to be off into some woods and farm fields to be honest this guy doesn’t look too bad I think it might be drizzly but I don’t think we’re gonna run into anything serious very soon seems all good straight ahead foreign to get those pedals moving a little faster [Music] even in these small towns all of a sudden you’ll just come upon these really nice bike paths some sheep out yeah all throughout this whole area there’s almost always a bike lane a bike path some kind of separated through wafer bikes it’s awesome [Music] foreign [Music] a pleasant day of writing it’s my favorite kind of riding this morning overcast very cool maybe 60 65 degrees and uh a little bit of drizzle here and there just enough to kind of keep you awake my favorite type of first blush of autumn colors going on over here it’s what September 7th 8th seems early foreign [Music] foreign poking through the uh Forest getting bigger and bigger all the time of course really pretty Forest again a nice cool day gorgeous variety conditions [Music] riding hard today a little bit of rain stopped for a little bit of lunch got some nice neighbors over there the bike trail looks good Nadia looks gorgeous as always rolling Victor handsome as hell and food looks just as good too yeah it’s a good day and look at this gorgeous little she had Toe with a looks like a church behind it this is the way people touring might get monotonous after all we’re talking day after day of doing nothing but riding your bike the truth is every day brings something new entirely new Landscapes new experiences every minute feels fresh and new and the constant sense of Discovery never seems to get old [Music] thank you [Music] so this place is actually an energy supply house they used wood on the side of the house for insects and bees to live in what an incredible thoughtful considerate design very eco-friendly Bravo [Music] foreign is nothing short of Exquisite winding downhill through Village streets on a smooth and Serpentine path possible to keep the smile from your face it would be hard to come up with a better way to experience the classic French than from the seat of a bicycle look at all them flowers huh whoa [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] hello baby how you doing been missing you today yeah yeah I saw all those these were pretty hello you’re liking that huh well what’s in there well you can’t have it no you cannot have that cannot have my bag look at your hooks look at those Huffs oh my goodness and what I know is on you huh we have something for you yes we do that is a huge horse there you go you scare me yeah I know he goes for what he wants that’s for sure [Music] probably like 15 miles we gotta go that way all along the length of the water we notice trees adorned with mistletoe which although common was something neither of us had ever seen before and while oddly beautiful the plants are actually parasitic [Music] hey baby just climbing a 11 grade there yeah yeah impressive yes and there’s Jesus cheering us on changing uh changing up the sleeves you know you get out onto these High Plains here on the trail all around very unprotected and the wind really does become quite a factor as you’re riding I don’t know what the speed is but it’s enough to definitely slow your roll weird weather yesterday and several days we’ve had this really intense heat a sweaty and you know muggy and today lustery and it’s threatening and it’s kind of cold I mean the temperatures keep dropping not super cold but maybe high 50s low 60s just a lot of extremes it’s hard to hard to find your rhythm in a weird way but a beautiful Trail you know all that good stuff [Music] foreign pick up just a little bit see if we can make it to emboa before the Deluge hits looks like it’s coming kind of hit us I think [Music] coming down pretty good now windy and rainy yeah yeah getting a little wet got kind of cold and rainy for about three miles from envoir [Music] foreign [Music] ‘s got a little squeak it’s a town where Leonardo da Vinci used to live there’s no way to work no we gotta walk it we rode into amboi on wet streets finding a bustling tourist town with its Charming medieval Town Center in the Magnificent Chateau de embois so beautiful the town is famous as the home of Leonardo da Vinci at the end of his days what we didn’t find was a hotel room as the throngs of tourists had apparently arrived before we did but eventually Nadia found a delightful Airbnb just outside of the santro V and we settled in to enjoy this lovely city the hair barometer the hair says it’s gonna rain it rains hello handsome belly foreign [Music] loving the snails [Music] bonjour [Music]

    1. Another fantastic video thank you so much. Looking forward to being back there later this year. The meadow of flowers was breathtaking but I especially loved how you describe the joy of this kind of touring. It is difficult for someone who hasn't done this sort of ride to grasp the sheer pleasure of rolling along through such a beautiful place. Thanks again.

    2. Nice ride, we did a similar one some years ago. France is a beautiful country and i love it here. Like you I never went into the chateau, just admired it from the outside. I believe it was a bit of a white elephant and cost much more than thought to build. Lovely building but no wonder there was revolution with the peasants living in poverty compared to the show of riches by the aristocracy.
I look forward to the next episode, thanks for sharing.

    3. Bonjour !
Have a good trip, see you soon on the french roads😉👍

    4. Hi folks; Loved it again. Made for great watching for a Sat morning breakfast. Snowy and 2 deg C here so great to see the sun in France. And just watched the battle of Agincourt on Net flix last night so somewhat Appropriate.

    5. Bonsoir à vous deux,

Time flies at an accelerated speed watching your videos, you start watching and then, it’s finished 😕and 20 minutes are gone without realizing it.

Native French speaker here, for Bois, you got the final “oi” sound with the silent “s”, perfect.
For the”Bl” sound, just like in Blue😉
      Bl-oi.
Then, listening to you wrestling with the local names adds to the viewer experience and, for a native speaker is very charming.😘

    6. Chambord is so stark. Not nearly as beautiful as Chenonceau. But, as you alluded, the ostentatious display of wealth at a time when the lowest 40% of earners held about 14% of the wealth in France, where the top 20% of earners held a whopping 60%. Hmmm… compare that to our circumstances here in the US where according to the Census Bureau’s 2018 report on Income and Poverty in the United States, the lowest 40% of earners in the U.S. were worse off than 18th century French peasants. They held just 11.4% of wealth. And our top 20% of earners held 52% of it. Don't want to turn your lovely trip all political or anything, but it is striking how we are letting history repeat itself.

Ok, enough of that…. You are bringing back so many great memories of our time in places like Blois. What a great town! The Chateau d'Amboise is just one of two in town. Did you make it to the second one, Château du Clos Lucé which is Leonardo's former home? So looking forward to your remaining videos! How many do you expect there will be?

    7. I always worry about leaving the bike somewhere. I have three locks. If I am just leaving for a few minutes I use a basic cable, otherwise I have a lock of flat bars connected by large rivets that unfolds into a ring that hopefully will fit around the bike and something durable. I don't think you can make a bike impossible to steal, but just making it look harder than other bikes is my goal.
I try to have all my important things in one bag that I carry and everything else is dirty clothes, or replaceable things in other bags.

    8. Your welcome…. I plan on biking in France in the Spring of next year…Starting in Strasbourg and working my way to the Loire river valley. Your Videos inspire me and give me ideas
for where I want to go. Just one thing, Im doing my trip on an ebike, so it will be a bit easier on my legs.
