welcome to this new video in fact I should rather say welcome to this new concept of video because today in the form of an interview I am taking you with us to visit a very inspiring bicycle company panorama cycle and yes we are back after a world tour by bike in search of crazy adventures it is time to return to Quebec for a new chapter with the aim of promoting adventure cycling we want to highlight beautiful, inspiring projects while exploring our beautiful province 6:30 a.m. Thursday I’m not awake yet but it’s the first shoot we’re doing with a company that we depend on people there’s nothing there’s nothing organized in the idea I have a few questions for the interview and that That’s all the rest we’re going to improvise on the spot and as it’s the first time it’s stressful 3 hours drive to get there just because of the damn traffic and we’re off to meet them in the town of Granby good morning Jade ok that’s it we’re there thank you for being with us today it’s a great pleasure to meet you to see the environment with which you work we’re here here to talk about you we’re here to also talk about the company I I want to shed light on this beautiful project which is panorama cycle and so who are you Simon? So I am co-founder of the company now I am 100% owner of the panorama company we design bikes dedicated to the adventure bike market bikepacking bikes Touring bikes we launched the company with fatbikes we ended up with 7 beautiful models then that’s what my daily life looks like to operate here there in fact you are a team of three people if I’m not wrong yeah what is the team behind this beautiful company it’s a cont way current 12 15 people but full time in the company now there are three of us so there is me I take care of everything related to product planning vision of the company the big boss is like the big boss who chapautee a little of everything in fact yeah yeah it’s we can we can say that yeah there’s Jean-François Dubeau who is the workshop manager we’re putting it all together I have to make a parenthesis on that so we receives everything in pieces we like to keep control at this level from a quality point of view doing an assembly here then not only that it offers a lot of customization possibilities fitting wheels with dynamo hubs that’s something that ‘we often do a bunch of options to change components to make mixes we can do all that by assembling locally so Jean-François he takes care of the assembly a lot of customer services also questions a lot of questions often in relation auement to the parts of very technical questions we have someone here who worked 15 years in bicycle shops who has seen pass who is really a wonderful asset for the company me it is Louise Philipovitch I am responsible for communication and marketing at panorama cycle and I have a master’s degree in management it’s good it was very serious as you can hear I’m French but I’ve lived in Quebec for 6 years now so I’m a permanent resident and in fact that’s for about a month I have been responsible for communications and marketing at Panorama, in fact for the little anecdote I had the opportunity to meet Simon through the cycling community a few months ago I think it will be since last November it’s very recent yeah it’s really very recent it’s been like less than a year in fact I was coming back at this time from a 6 month trip by bike through the mountains in Europe and Morocco in fact we’re I met at a cycling evening, he told me that he was really interested in what I was doing and that evening I became a bit of a panorama ambassador so I had the opportunity to test the bikes well especially Fat bike in fact this winter in particular for an ultra endurance race called the Wendigo it’s 200 km of Fat bike wait what you arrive you say I’m going to do Fat bike and here I’m going for enduro well I’m more of an endurance cyclist myself so this was the opportunity to I love winter I do a lot of outdoor winter camping and there it was was like the opportunity to bring together two passions: cycling and the cold, finally managing the cold, so that’s what I think I had the opportunity to test the chic shock bike this winter, one thing leading to another, Simon ended up offering me a position at panorama to help him develop the company because it becomes a lot to manage all that alone yeah I even imagine I think that just with three it’s already huge yeah there are indeed a lot of jobs a lot of very good opportunities for a really interesting partnership so I’m very, very excited to work with the company for the next few years I think it’s really going yeah there are some very great, great adventures coming up with Panorama and then it’s is that it is really a company in terms of values which is very interesting because it is a very competitive market the bicycle we know there are many companies which are already on the market but for me panorama it stood out really in terms of the quality of the bikes and really on the niche side rather specialized adventure and bikepacking there was there was this desire there at the beginning of the creation of the company to do more than just I market bikes it’s try to get up in the morning then you have to have a deep motivation for what do we do how can we have this impact to develop a community then really inspire people I think over the years we have built a little something interesting with Panorama and that’s where the idea of starting a bicycle business like that was born because there as you mentioned yeah we’re getting away from the beaten path we are not into classic road cycling we are not into classic mountain biking but here we are really into the adventure travel idea from which this idea was born, a passion yeah well listen to me ‘ studied engineering I graduated in 2000 in 2008 then during my studies I started working for a bicycle company it’s a bicycle manufacturer called Guru which was located in Laval I worked there for about 5 to 6 years then it was at the time that I was doing a lot of mountain biking, I have a background in mountain biking, I raced downhill, I did the Coupe Québec a lot of cycling I was immersed a lot in already in the world of cycling I graduated in engineering I worked for a few years there then at a certain moment when I got a little exhausted I was always going to ride at the same places mainly always do the same trails the same networks I abandoned cycling a little so in this slightly more traditional form I became interested in adventure sport at that time I started to do a lot of cycling long distance hiking started climbing we went on mountaineering trips with my girlfriend then at one point while planning a trip to actually go to Nepal to do a trecking in Nepal I came across an article from someone who did the circuit that I wanted to do on foot he did it by bike it’s really off-road touring Bikepacking then it clicked at that moment I really got excited about what I wanted said ah my passion for cycling still existed I loved the whole adventure aspect when we say adventure that’s the there is uncertainty linked to the practice that’s what really excited me so there I obviously I dove head first into this world of backpacking and then that goes back to around 2013 2014 I met someone who also had this idea of founding a company in the sports industry there you see in 2013 2014 we are still in fashion it is there is not the rise of backpacking yet there we are a little out of the norm there it is little known yeah yeah it was very little known really it was really at the beginning then from my point of view in Quebec we had immense potential because of all our good national parks the nature reserves the ZEC network we have large spaces then my God there was really potential for the discovery of this territory in off-road touring mode it seems like things came to fruition at that moment in my head there was a plan that was made and we sold our first bikes at the end of 2015 ok that’s it it’s still a very small recent company we’re talking about not even 10 years yet yeah no that’s it 7 years uh 8th year of operation soon it’s been very organic growth has never pushed things with investments major a lot of investors will try to make the thing bigger to limit a little the risks the stress of the entrepreneur also it was my approach also to go a little more a little smoother it is after 7 years of operation we have a network of retailers people know us we have we have a team of fantastic ambassadors who create content but who do lots of adventure and who also inspire people to use their bike in a somewhat unusual way little different fact that it’s it’s like a fun period for for Panorama yeah I imagine with the explosion of bikepacking and everything at the moment how it’s going with the company there because there it seems like it’s has become not I would say not a fashion but it has clearly become a leisure which is anchored in the culture of cycling now in Quebec there yeah but how is it happening there in the last years there must have been a turning point people didn’t know you know he says wow that looks that looks exciting doing off-road touring bike packing but what am I doing where am I going that how do I go about it where am I I’m going to sleep then we tried to be uh well to put our shoulder to the wheel contribute to the growth of this sport or this discipline by publishing turnkey journeys on our website trying to offer a opportunity to do a weekend outing with an itinerary and then something to plan for and it helped a little I think we contributed to the growth of bikepacking at least in Quebec on this the pleasure of bikepacking c ‘is everything that also includes the bike the fact that the bike is a good part the preparation then a shot on the bike then after pedaling know how how we manage food how afterwards where do we sleep there has a lot of aspects that revolve around the practice of bikepacking that’s what makes bike packing yeah then I think it’s not even known I think there are even people in the bikepacking community that tells them absolutely nothing there you say that you are in the field of bikepacking you contribute to bikepacking you produce bikepacking bikes but what is bikepacking according to me I like to say off-road touring ok the world says it’s often I call it spontaneously by the world they understand people better bikepacking yes there are people who don’t really know it’s cycle touring but off road the tour of Gaspésie by the 132 on the asphalt cycle touring even if you have bags of Bikepacking it’s a little more like cycling I really like being in the woods I really like being in autonomy everything that is more rustic and exploring the territory so I already had experience in packing in Quebec and in the ‘Western Canada and I love it, everything that is a really remote area without a network where you have to know how to fend for yourself. Ambassador Marie-Pierre Savard has just done the Baja in Mexico which is completely isolated, a sand road you maybe 5 days without coming across a business because you won’t be able to stock up on anything it’s in contexts that are a little more remote en route there we’re talking about Bikepacking in terms of bike design is there bikes that are designed you design them according to bikepacking does it require specifications necessary for bikepacking or any bike can do it in fact yes we want to encourage the world any bike that’s for sure it’s the people they want to get started do n’t equip themselves in a big way you want to try it you can take your bike then go go do a circuit with what you currently have even though there are Bike packing races taking place it’s often it’s in a non-competitive context people prefer to be comfortable in the saddle for a long period of time that in a very aggressive position to be aerodynamic let’s say or whatever on the other hand when people are interested in it then they want to have something a little more specialized our bikes are thought designed for that really it’s the geometry frames the characteristics of the frame whether it’s the attachment points to put the accessories the choice of materials obviously so there I say we have 7 bikes there are five out of the 7 which have steel frames it’s a material which is very durable but which also offers comfort it is frames which are a little more flexible than aluminum or carbon for long distance once again it offers a certain suspension a level of comfort people who push to the extreme make uh very remote expeditions uh then arrive what with a quest of steel it’s it’s the steel can be repaired by uh a car mechanic that this part of interest then we have we has two carbon frames in our opinion someone who is interested in Bikepacking but who wants a bike that is a little more efficient more rigid when pedaling a little more responsive lighter who is interested in ultra races or races long distance we have carbon bikes on the product development side how we proceed there at Panorama we do it with in the best factories it has in the world for the manufacturing of bikes the fact that the industry is largely based in Taiwan the fact that we have good manufacturing partners the design of the bikes is done locally we do a range of tests that’s one of them that’s an example we had this bike there were impact tests we want our bikes even our gravel bikes are very resistant to impacts when a bike loaded for bikepacking falls and then it falls on a rock it’s no time to have breakages so it’s our gravel bikes we test them according to mountain bike standards it’s ready to take impacts there’s already a brittle here that that’s a test yeah that’s it that’s a bike made we did tests with different materials so obviously there is carbon fiber that’s what we see on the top it’s another type of fiber the objective of this fiber is a fiber which is much less brittle so a carbon fiber typically if this if this there has broken it will it will break in two you know I think everyone has seen photos of a carbon fiber which is completely separated in two so this fiber there which is bronze color on the above its role is to maintain the structure in one piece despite the fact that it had an impact which would have separated the whole in two for people who use these bikes when traveling in slightly more remote regions if it happens by bad luck a big impact or there happens a breakage the bike it remains intact to continue the journey we have a bunch of tests in the laboratory then then do tests in the field it goes like that there you say you have 7 types of bikes models what does that cover the 7 models in fact yeah what does that cover there we mentioned earlier before we started recording the FAT bikes that’s what made you known if I’m not mistaken in the market yeah what are the what are the 7 models the company we launched that with the FAT bikes from a point of view we think the Fat bike is a beautiful bike on the road for 12 months a year done that people in Quebec for sure or around the world use it a lot for the winter but we transform a lot of them into FAT bikes with narrower tires so that they become like incredible road expedition machines. is beautiful bikes for us to launch the business choose a model the fatbike is interesting because it offered a business opportunity I’m talking more about business it’s an opportunity to offer something all year round it’s to sell it a bike 12 months a year but then quickly obviously the plan was made with the other bikes so we have two Gravel bikes one in steel one in carbon we have two mountain bikes one designed with a straight handlebar then one with a curved handlebar the Taïga exp curved mountain handlebar what is it a little rarer we can think that it is like a Gravel bike a little boosted point of view with capacities on the road a little more a little greater then we have the forion a Touring cyclo bike a a little more traditional yeah a little like as you used there it has capacities on the road a little more limited what really characterizes this bike is its loading capacity in bikepacking people are going to be a little more minimalist in their approach how they will load the bike our Forrion him the choice of materials the choice of tubes to create the frame it is made according to putting 100lbs of material on the bike then that the bike remains super super stable our Anticosti is in this c it’s an Anticosti the anticosti in steel but it’s much thinner tubes so it’s a bike that’s flexible then if we as long as we put a lot of material on it a level like someone fresh with the Forrion it becomes it flexes a little too much the Forrion all that to say it’s four big saddlebags 100lbs of material it stays it stays straight it’s a real Touring here it’s our line of bikes are you only in Quebec for example do you deliver internationally do you deliver to Canada how does it work if someone wants to buy a bike? we have a retailer network in Canada so we cover quite a few major cities in Canada we do direct sales which we deliver directly from here we ship all over the world obviously we will put the link that appears on the screen but also in description if you are interested in going to see the Panorama website it’s time to go visit the workshop where these magnificent bikes are created thank you very much for opening the doors to us, it’s a pleasure the bikes arrive here the parts arrive here it’s everything is assembled here yeah yeah everything we can go see if we go around but warehouse office everything is everything is here cool we’re going to go see that I call back are just three doing everything by that we go back obviously through the warehouse so that the material as I said earlier there we receive everything in spare parts we do the complete assembly here Jean-François who is here prepares wheels we have positions of work a bit of stations uh for sub-assemblies like that we prepare these are the wheels the handlebars it fits for our summer deliveries done that we operate we have two delivery cycles actually we deliver the FAT bike in the fall summer bikes are not bad in the spring there we are getting ready to deliver everything from a point of view there is a lot of equipment a lot of bikes which are pre-sold we are still waiting for a few items there to be able to launch the complete assemblies done here it’s really all the parts for all the bikes all there yeah we obviously use Shimano Sram groupsets I was talking about RaceFace WTB all this comes from Taiwan because there to clarify when we say that the bikes are there really arrives not assembled is that all the big companies arrive pre-assembled in a box and we as technicians just removed the bike and put everything together so that it was taken out of the box and then pre-adjusted there it’s really 0 we start from the frame and we assemble everything yeah uh done that’s the difference between pre-assembled from the big companies and really starting from one piece and putting it together here yeah yeah what we like to do we do the assembly one complete assembly the bike it is ready to ride it is adjusted it is perfect perfect then before putting it in the box we remove the wheel before we remove the handlebars we pack it when it goes to a store we often get feedback from our retailers who say your bikes are exceptional from a point of view it’s easy to because there is JF behind who s ‘take care of it before sending them yeah that’s it they really are we do a lot of customization through that where the bikes are assembled there yeah well we continue we’re going to go we’re going to go forward here that’s a nice bike ok it’s we saw this is where it happens we saw sub-stations of preparation for the wheels for the handlebars also then the final assembly the workstations are here we usually operate with three bikes when it comes time to assemble then on the other side there it’s more your office it’s more yeah that’s it we’re going we’re going to go we’re on the other side in a room we’ve separated that we’ve just come ‘move I must say we were from another place we were in another place which was a little less practical we have just moved here there we are still located we don’t bother too much Louise it’s okay we’re here we arrive ok that’s it it’s very good there is another aspect that we haven’t addressed yet it’s the whole environmental aspect from day 1 of the creation of the company we wanted to do something we wanted to get involved at a certain level but there was always this idea of doing our part as a company to have an involvement we were certified carbon neutral with a climate neutral organization it is compensated for polluting emissions by purchasing carbon credits there are other aspects packaging if our packaging is 100% recyclable we try as best we can to do our part in this and here I had a question for you we ‘re going to wait uu you know what they’re doing at the top no maybe it’s there they’re doing it’s a knitting class yeah they’re doing it starts there well they do it twice a week it’s twice a week per week it makes a bit of noise like that it’s bunting of the knitters what about the electric bike ah yes eh the famous question the electric bike for as far as we’re concerned it’s not in our plans there is no unlike Pinion that there have been people sending us for years that you wouldn’t be interested in doing something with that the electric bike we don’t we don’t have any demand from our customers Let’s say currently people who go on expeditions and adventures don’t use it much or rarely, we don’t see it much, let’s say Touring on the road, bikepacking is perhaps the technologies are not yet adapted to that, we’ll see how it will develop obviously. What are your future plans where you want to go for the company what awaits you in the next few years from a product point of view there are many projects in progress that’s my is my little side I get very excited when obviously I talk about product but we have new generations for FAT bikes which are coming which is quite unique to offer on this a new model which was seen during the the Transboreal expedition if people followed Samuel who crossed Samuel Lalande Marconde crossing Quebec from the southernmost point to the northernmost point used a prototype then Marie Pierre Savard who also used a prototype of this bike so that ‘ with a transmission is called it’s Pinion they make an integrated 18 speed transmission with the belt yeah made that’s what that’s for years we’ve had requests for this kind of product so that the people are interested in Touring en route bike packing is very interested in this kind of concept there it’s not in Europe a little less here from a brand point of view in recent years I think we’re going continuing a little in this perspective is working with the people who inspire us, people who have large-scale trips, expeditions or smaller trips but who have this passion that we have and that we are capable of communicating and then inspiring people it is a a little ambience also Panorama I think it came out a little in what did I say but try to inspire people to try bikepacking to get lost a little in our beautiful forest paths in our ZEC then uh that’s our bike ultimately That’s what concludes this video thank you very much for listening to the end let me know in the comments if this kind of video format interests you if you have ideas too inspirations where we go and knock on the door of other inspiring projects I want to shed light on many beautiful projects that are being done here in Quebec in short there are other filmings in progress there are other great projects coming up, I can’t wait to present it all to you on the channel, it’s nice to be back on the networks, see you soon for a next video Ciao!
