Noting that Slovenia emerged from the rubble is an understatement. There’s the devastating earthquakes of 1511, 1622, and 1895, the Balkan and Yugoslav wars, and oh did I mention that Slovenia is the only European country that has suffered fascism, Nazism and communism all in the 20th century?

Despite being a young and small country, Slovenia tries to be a big fish in a big pond. For instance, the Slovenia Navy has 3 ships guarding 49km of coastline.

Our view from bicycles led us through forests, lakes, caves, and waterfalls with the Julian and Carinthian Alps standing sentry. Monuments and relics from two World Wars remind us of how then and now we continue to battle for our borders. Slovenia only gained her independence from Yugoslavia in 1992.

With more than 100 mountain chalets, 200 plus waterfalls, peaks reaching nearly 3000 meters, and the deepest subterranean cave in the world. Slovenia certainly earns her bragging rights. And, oh did I mention the 2,666 kilometers of bike paths which means you could ride about 1656 miles without having to be on a highway.

Our Slovenian guides, Matija and Samo give us a taste of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria’s culture and their four languages. Along the way we sometimes wear many hats and wear big shoes. Other times we get our hands sticky or we ride with no hands. Some even ride the golden horn. Needless to say, a good time was had by all
