In this episode we practice for (almost) the long and ‘ undulating’ day two of our Edinburgh to Grantham ride. Almost 70 miles and 3,000 feet of climbing but without the luggage seemed like a good training ride. It was a beautiful day, if not chilly at times. Here we detail our itinerary. If you would like to check the route in more detail, with a view to meeting us en-route, these are the links:

for good morning it’s a beautiful sunny morning but there’s a quite a stiff headwind and it’s cold as Wendy’s finding out because she’s just decided to uh go SLE go Summer She’s decided it’s summer already yeah uh so will jacket go on again or not we’ll see oh possibly it’s all right going up H it’s downhill it’s freezing so what we’re doing today is trying to replicate what’s going to be our hardest day on our edin bar back to Grandam ride we’ve struggled a little bit with the route because obviously we’ve got to fit it around accommodation uh means the first day going to be slightly shorter it’s going to be just under 40 Mi uh but that makes the second day almost 70 M and 3,000 ft of climbing so it’s going to be a pretty hard day so today we’re riding round about the 65 70 Mi and it looks like we’re going to have about 3,000 ft of climbing what you kept that quiet Wendy said to me earlier it looks like we’ve got 1,800 ft of climbing today but I didn’t let on at the time but I no you did go quiet so yeah we’ve neither of us being feeling that fit to be honest with you I think it’s the after effects of these colds and not being able to get out quite as much and given what we’re planning it’s going to be quite challenging so we’ve got to get some training in make sure we’re up to it keep thinking I’ll get fitter as the week goes on that’s what they say on the tour to France isn’t it that did they yeah yeah the Riders get fitterers by the end of the first week so right that’s the theory so by the time we finished we’ll be we’ll be fitter we’ll be fitter so what we’re going to do today on this ride you know again we’ll show you our ride but we’re going to stop at some point and uh take you through the route plan where we’re going to be on individual days and so on wheny started to make preparation she started to lay all her kit out ready for packing L now obviously on today’s ride we’re not carrying the bags so we’ll have that extra weight but we have got this headwind that’s going to make up for the fact that we haven’t got bags because Wendy has said no no I was told by a cyclist that you were told by somebody in the pub who knew somebody else who saw it on the internet who says that in May the wind should be behind us the prevailing wind and it’s all downhill yeah don’t know why nobody believes us when we say that today we’re going to have two coffee stops because I think we need it well we need to replicate the ride oh that’ll be four then so the first stop we’re going to make is the dairy barn uh you’ve been on this route before with us it’s the one where we go through melt mbre and we have that gated Hill so we’re hoping that we’re going to have the gates open today and then the second stop we’re going to have will probably be at at the hilltop cluing the name The Hilltop Cafe at asford be that might be a bit early might it I think it might be actually where else is the we can go cck grave is anything in we yeah good point yeah we’re going through grave aren’t we so this is going to be the ride you’ve seen before but we’re tacking effectively another ride onto it to make the 70 mil quite a big [Music] church that’s what happens when you take your mud guards off early glad I’m in front oh all I can think about is that hill to come well you’ve got your new gears now I know doesn’t mean I’ve got new legs we couldn’t get Wendy the uh absolute black oval chain Rings they don’t make them for her FSA crank so what she’s uh done is she’s got 4630 standard round Rings what did I have before before she had 4832 yeah that’s but we we’ve now put them down to uh 4630 um not a huge difference but she is noticing a difference and here we are at the first coffee stop and it looks like there’s plenty of people here before us lies oh there’s the gates closed at the top oh that’s ruined it [Music] what [Music] [Music] you this is well POS is it look red orange green wo who knew straight on yeah oh that way yeah that’s somebody’s Gard I was going to somebody’s house thank thank you they’d never have noticed are you sure you you come first for sure thank you very much I could do with one of those reversing beefers I think I was going to have a rest then I see what you mean about us not going through the PA no I do pay attention it was only me that designed the route just like you to think that I know what I’m I do actually look at the rout yeah well it’s good job one of us does now we’ve got the wind behind us and I’m really hot now you should have got short sleev shouldn’t you that yeah be worth a bit of pain harden up hardening up ready for summer yeah obviously just a softy yeah least you’re taking your heated gloves off I might take these I’ve got my Ms underneath oh got went fingerless assume it’s the old man of house isn’t it I wonder what age that is the house number’s very French isn’t it yeah PL the White House is very white oh our favorite wall isn’t it stunning so pretty cold again now yeah get that jacket back right we’re about halfway through our ride now um doing all right I’m feeling okay Wendy are you yeah not too bad not too bad at all pretty good so we just about nailed down the uh Edinburgh trip um we travel up on the train uh on the 11th of May uh what time did we get there Wendy um oneish about oneish 11 is 11 we we’re planning to ride for 37 miles that day it was going to be more we wanted 50 that day but we had a problem finding a hotel wend is organized all the hotels so uh should be fun could be inace Faulty Towers we’re going to spend a bit of time in Edinburgh hopefully and have a little look around so it’ll be good not to do too much mileage that day it’s hilly Edinburgh edinb hilly but not a lot of climbing on that day and we’ll end up on that day hopefully in Dunbar where we’re stopping overnight uh but it does mean the second day we’ve got a lot more to do we’ve got almost 70 M and 3,000 ft of climbing on that second day so that’s going to be fairly fairly Hardo and that second day we end up in Beador the third day we’re heading from beel to Whitley Bay that’s 55 mil and 1700 ft of climbing so that’s not so bad but of course we’ll be 3 days in we’ll have been riding every day and on the 14th it’s Whitley Bay to Middlesboro that’s 55 mil and 1900 ft of climbing so again not too bad do we go in the tunnel we go under the under the time under the time I’m looking forward to that yeah then on the 15th it’s middlesbor to SK arra that’s 54 mil but we’ve got 3,400 ft of climbing that day then on the 16th we’re traveling from scarra to Beverly that’s 50 m and 800 ft of climbing and then from Beverly to home it’s a big day it’s 90 M and 2,600 ft of climbing I’ve worked on this route and tried to pair it down in terms of distance and in terms of climbing but yes I think we’re about where we need to be so if any of you are around on those days then please you know spend an hour with us have a ride with us and have a jck carry my bags or just meet us and have a coffee somewhere that would be great so hopefully uh yeah we’ll see some of you now the other treat you have in store is that uh because some of you like Wendy’s singing I I really don’t know why you do but some of you apparently do uh Wendy is going to choose use a different song and it will be Regional based when when we go through IDE it’s going to be the all mine and when we leave Scotland it’s going to beore bat no Scotland that’s yorkshare I’m going to walk 500 M that one was it 5,000 I don’t know how far he walks it’ll feel like 5,000 and then uh now Yorkshire it more about that and then when we get to scar scar are you going to scar and don’t know the rest no that’s it I only know one line right on that note we’re having too much fun we better get on with the rest of this ride don’t think I’ve been up here before no up is the word yeah for oh this is the Lefty bit that’s where we went on once I think psychopath closed ahead you read closed did it say yeah Wendy was out on her own uh about a week ago and she had a nasty noise and her back wheel started to wobble so she limped back home contacted David at no two cycles who immediately repaired it for her and it was a broken bearing and it was totally obliterated apparently yeah there was nothing left zil got on and you’ve said it’s a you’ve read that it’s a bit of a problem sometimes on the Liv devot is that right yeah yeah it do seem to be but you know I’ve heard a lot of people saying that they always put cheap bearings in because you can’t see them so right you know and some people say they changed the bearings immediately yeah yeah all yeah so I plann this to be around uh 75 77 miles I think it was but Wendy said she’d only signed up for 100k so yeah uh time’s getting on as well so we’re shortening it slightly so when you’ll get 100K I hope so yeah I certainly not I’ve got to go around again not all the way around it’s been uh a good day isn’t it it’s been lovely perfect cycling weather yeah we’ve surprised ourselves with our strength we seem to have recovered quite well definitely on the menend yeah of course the acid test would be could we do it all again tomorrow and I think that’s I think that’s sort of things in the mind when you know you haven’t got to do it you can just turn off yeah when you know you’ve got to do it then you will do it well once the big day is over and you know the next day is only a 50 you kind of can settle in can’t you a bit better yeah it’s ironic isn’t it that we’ll see 50 as a short day yes but we’ve uh paced ourselves pretty well today although I think we’ve been pretty fast yeah especially with that wind behind us it’s stamina isn’t it which yeah you know when you haven’t done 100K since I don’t know probably last October so we’ve got a few more training rides to get in before we do the Edinburgh trip hope so Wendy’s away next week but by the time you see this she’ll be back and uh hopefully we’ll have some more dates booked I’d like to say I’ll come back lighter and fitter but I’d be lying you told me you going to use the gym every day yeah g n actually actually you did say I’m going to use the gym it will be a tonic y wooo that’s the 100 well done is that the first one this year yeah great stuff I think I can’t remember last time I did one it’s wild it’s good and you still got more in you yeah is we’re doing a lot of climbing as well today so well it’s been a great day hasn’t it brilliant absolutely brilliant so Wendy’s just completed 100K I’ve probably got about another 8 miles to go I think I’m going to be what am I at the moment I’m on 62.8 so I’ll probably be around 70 71 miles that is none of these foreign measurements so as Wendy is nearly back yay we’ll say goodbye to you now and hopefully you’ll join us next time bye for now bye keep going oh well I’ll tell you what you’re doing amazing yeah feel

Hope you get some good weather for your trip, I'll be riding the Rebellion Way the same week.
I agree with Wendy (wouldn't dare do otherwise 😂) about getting fitter as the trip goes on, however I find day 3 is often a bit of a dip day.
Love the ‘struggle cam’ on the way up the hill Roy with Wendy zig zagging away behind you!
Looks a great route, I've always wanted to visit Lindisfarne, seen it plenty of times on the train up to Edinburgh, it's something I always look out for, as a landmark, have a great time.
Do you mean hill top farm
The profile of your view looks very challenging. Being the gentleman you are I'm almost certain you'll fit a front rack and take Wendy's panniers!
Fair notice of the upcoming ride, it does of course mean Wendy has plenty of time to learn more verses of those chosen songs.
Fingers crossed my wife's radiotherapy goes well and we'll be able to do our planned trip to St Malo later this year. We're planning around 40 miles each day and I have devised the flattest route I can. It may not sound a lot but we don't normally do this for 5 days. We've chickened out and will catch the train home though.😀
Nice ride and I really liked the wall covered with flowers.
Thanks for sharing your plans, hoping the weather will be kind to you.
Okay Roy, how hard did you have to twist Wendy's arm to get her agreement for this 'longest adventure ever'? 😁 I've done my share of long distance trips by bicycle and learned that it's not really for me. If I were in your neighborhood though, I would definitely meet up at one of your coffee stops. As it is, I'll be cheering for you and will enjoy the resulting video.
🎶…… Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine.🎶 The missing phrase. 😊👍
I'll put out a wish into the universe that you have wonderful weather, tailwinds, no mechanical difficulties or punctures.
If you're coming through Tyneside head up through south Shields coast stunning scenes, and there's a café on sea road called Michella's that's very popular with the local south shields vagabond cycling group, voted the best ice cream in Tyneside too, then from there further up the road there's a stunning lighthouse called Souter trust me if you look it up you will want to visit, good luck both of you on the trip 👍
Have you checked the tides for Lindisfarne, and I would suggest Wendy sings Fog on the Tyne at Lindisfarne as that was one of their biggest hits. Unless she knows Lady Eleanor
Nice looking route, looking forward to seeing the journey unfold . Wise choice to hug the coast, I used route 1 from Newcastle down and had a hard time on some of the NCN surfaces.
Hi Roy. Regarding your Day 4 route. It looks like you intended crossing the River Tees via the Transporter Bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge is out of action and will be for some time, so you won’t get across at that point. The alternative would be to follow the A1046 to Haverton Hill and follow the Haverton Hill Road to join the A1032 road and on to the Tees Newport Bridge, and cross there. Hope that helps.
That will be some cycle ,wish you all the best
Never take your mudgards off because it rains in summer in England and Ireland leave them on all year. good video.
Hi Roy and Wendy. Unfortunately, I’m away for your Dunbar to Beadnell leg, or I’d have loved to join you for a while, Belford being my home town.
A couple of things. Be aware of the tide times for your crossing to Lindisfarne. Also any puddles on the causeway are very salty seawater, so a wash off of your bikes at Beadnell would be recommended.
Can I also recommend the Guru Coffee Shop in the small village of Fenwick. It’s right on your route. Claire serves lovely coffee there and locally produced savouries and tray bakes.
Have a great ride and perpetual tailwinds.
There will be thousands of people lining the whole route, bands playing music flag waving. You will be so impressed the ride will be easy.
What a great challenge, I am originally from near Durham and spent many happy times on the Northumberland coast and at Whitley Bay our go to holiday when I was a toddler. Hope you are able to take in all the great scenery on your travel south, will look forward to seeing your video logs. Have a great time.
