hey ronal welcome to the Iron Man 70.3 North American championships race breakdown and Analysis for the third race of the Iron Man Pro Series where every second matters it was supposed to be a hot and windy day later on in the race getting up to 87° but early in the morning it was nice and chilly for these pren to dive into the waters there was 54 of them total with $75,000 in prize money and offer and four slots to the Iron Man 70.3 world championships in December it was also a gold tier race so some good PTO points on offer for these men to try and go up the rankings so they dove into the water at first light and as always it was a hectic and chaotic swim start it was so chaotic in fact that a lot of the athletes who started on the left- hand side seemed to go quite far off course immediately and they lost quite a bit of time to those who started on the right hand side after that the swim wasn’t too eventful or nothing that we could see in particular three men got away at the front and stayed there pretty much all the way to the end it was Magnus Manor Nicholas kette and Mark dubri as expected was a really fast swim it was almost a minute faster than last year where Mark dubri had the fast to split just before coming into transition Mark just lost touch with those guys but he came in just a few seconds behind and now 40 seconds down was maximilan spurl Anthony cus Justin Metzler and with another group a minute back containing the likes of Justin RI Mickey Tagle and Robert Baki then 2 minutes 46 seconds down was Jackson laundry this his eighth Time Racing here in St George he’d be doing a lot of arot testing coming into this one and he was one of the favorites to take the win here but probably the number one favorite was Sam long the defending Champion he came out of the water 3 minutes and 17 seconds down which is quite a bit it was actually 30 seconds slower than his last year split and he did say the first half of the swim was pretty tough felt like he was drowning at times but then the second half felt really easy so into transition and Nick kette was first out on the bike Mark dubri had a really fast T2 so he was second out however despite that fast T2 Mark lost a good bit of time at the start of the bike and within the first 5 miles he was already 50 seconds down from the front Max SPL and Anthony costus then were the two other fast movers at the front they flew all the way to join Nicholas kette and Magnus Manor and Anthony Costas was coming into this one as a bit of a dark hor he had a great race at 70.3 Valencia he had a crazy front end bike setup that I’ve never seen before that has collapsible front handlebars so that he can have the brakes in the TT position and fold them out when needed absolutely crazy seems a little sketchy to me let me know what you think but they were clearly working for him and then as expected behind Sam along was flying up he caught a lot of ground immediately with within 5 miles and was within ey shot of Jackson just 20 seconds ahead of him even though Jackson himself was gaining time to the front and had caught six positions himself B Hamilton was another fast mover he’s a 25-year-old New Zealand athlete he got third at Iron Man New Zealand a fantastic bike Runner and he was trying to stay with Sam long as well and then after 12 miles we had a clear front group of four with maximilan spurl now leading the way Magnus manner behind him Nicholas quette and Anthony cus and then a minute and 20 back was the likes of metler Gillespie dubri Mickey tackle and Justin R and then not too long after that Jackson laundry and Sam long joined their group and began picking off one by one as they work their way to the front this was extremely impressive as it meant that Sam long had caught the over three minutes gap down from the swim that he had to Mark dubri who had the fastest Spike split the weekend before at St Anthony’s in less than 15 miles and not too much later than that and Sam was off of that group and he was on his way to the front Group which he caught before long and the front group actually helped him catch them as they took an early right turn out of nowhere maximilan SPL was the one who led them astray but they got quickly back on the right track and going again and they made the right turn at the right time shortly after all of a sudden Sam was off the front of that group and on his way towards the infamous Snow Canyon climb where it was probably only going to get worse for his competitors maximilan spurl deciding he was going to join him just like he did in Oceanside you would have expected perhaps Justin R and Jackson laundry to have been able to go with Sam long just like they did in Oceanside as well but they weren’t able to for Jackson it was most likely because of a disaster that happened for him where his bip shifter fell off his bike and he couldn’t shift to the harder gears it meant he was stuck in the easier gears and he didn’t have a spare one on the base far but because of this he had to stop and it clearly meant he wasn’t going to be able to challenge for the win and it wasn’t long before spurl and long had their Gap at the front and began to head up Snow Canyon with a lead and this is when Sam long started yelling for Max Burl to take a turn at the front of the race now what do you think about this should Max absolutely take a turn here and not just sit in behind Sam and draft off him or do you think like I do it’s a race why would he help Sam long and give him a little bit of a rest sitting behind him clearly Sam’s the best biker so I asked this on Instagram and a lot of you agree like me that he shouldn’t listen to Sam and race his own race and interestingly enough I can see the pros responses to this in my Instagram and it was split pretty 50/50 amongst the pros who follow me either way they did stay together in the canyon and then Sam let it rip when he got up to the top of Snow Canyon and got a gap on Max spurl the cars were even even having a tough time keeping up with him now Jackson was hanging on behind even with his issues and thankfully was able to use his low gearing to go up the Snow Canyon climb really well however he had to get off his bike again at the top to put it in a high gear so he could descend faster and he would only come into T2 in 11th now Sam pulled into T2 with a sub two bike split it was the fastest St George ride ever on any of the courses except for gustof Eden at the 2021 70.3 Iron Man World Championships where he went a 158 and then Sam backed that up with the fastest T2 not putting on any socks getting a little bit more of a lead over Max Burl who was about a minute back and they both got on the Run further behind them was Nicholas quinette Anthony costess impressively Magnus Manor who managed to hold on to the front of this bike ride and then B Hamilton Justin medler Mark duri and Michael Vice were also there and onto the Run and clearly Sam was having a day here he was absolutely flying and it looked like that bike leg didn’t take anything out of him he was quickly gaining time on everybody behind him but other fast movers in the race were Ben Hamilton Jackson laundry and Mark dubri at first but they had a lot of work to do to catch Max SPL and Nicholas quette who is having a brilliant day he’s an academic accountant who’s actually chasing the Paris Olympics at the moment and he suffered heart issues in the in the past and it was looking like he would hold on for an impressive third here at about halfway through the run it looked like he might take second from Max SPL but Sam long was just so far up the road and looking stronger and stronger so there was going to be no catching him but then as the Run was winding down it started getting more and more dramatic as Nicholas quette would eventually take over Max SPL but unfortunately for him Ben Hamilton had made his way up and took second place instead of Nicholas kette and then to make matters worse for kette Anthony costus and Jackson laundry absolutely turned on the Jets in the second half of this run and it was going to be such a close finish for that last spot on the podium but back to Sam for a second because he was so far ahead he was able to stop and kiss his wife and see his son and he was basically sprinting this one home with an insane 110 run and then straight into an interview looking fine after he finished it was such a good show for his fifth race of the year and with so many races recently he is on fire he would then have to wait seven and a half minutes until Ben Hamilton would come over the Finish Line in second place and quette who he thought had definitely secured a Podium went from third with a half mile to go to fifth place because of Anthony Costas and Jackson laundry who were having their own battle for the podium and it was Anthony Casas who just held on head of laundry right at the end who looked like he had given everything what a brilliant race with Sam long winning by such a big margin that he hurts everyone else’s Pro Series points and one thing that you have to know is that even with Sam’s Amazing run here he actually didn’t have the fastest runs but Connor Weaver who actually finished in 15th Place ran the fastest ever run here in St George beating Yan ferino’s time of 109 from back in 2014 it’s not the exact same course but still if you compare the times from back then to today it is super interesting and to see that Sam out biked Yan by about 10 minutes is absolutely crazy and maybe that’s why he will be moving up into rank number one in the world in the PTO rankings according to Triathlon insights who ran the data that says after May 7th Christian blumell will lose his European open score and Sam will move to be the number one ranked Tri athlete in the world what do you think of that is he the best Tri athlete in the world right now love to hear your thoughts down 1. Anthony Coates has used that hyprid cockpit before COVID already… They are always sold out.. also Norseman winner has used them (can't recall name) but haven't seen it other than with those two

    2. The unwritten rule is to share the load in the leader group. Those who disagree are sad racers who are always far from the front group.

    3. Sam is definitely the top dog right now, mainly with his high level of constancy and ability to finish a race. The rankings will all depend on the performance at specific races though.
Can we talk about the rubbish performance by the IM broadcast? Literally dont know what’s going on during the race!!! Showing Lagerstrom during the swim, even though he wasn’t in the race, and commentating on where he’s at in the pack!? Then the run debacle with Ben! Geeeze 😅

    4. IMO only Marcus Ditlev and probably “newly born” Lionel can be a threat in both 70.3 and 140.6 at WC. No other guy can sustain this combo B+R.

    5. It's a no-draft race, 12 m minimum distance, yet, everyone rides in groups. I guess 12 m isn't long enough and it should be 20 m like PTO. Oh wait, they all ride in groups there, too. Hmmm, when I race time trials, no one drafts anyone, riders don't create groups. What's up with triathletes? It must be due to the length of the race (much longer than my 20 km and 40 km TTs) and that everyone is riding below threshold.

    6. Whatever Sam is doing to train the bike and run, he should keep doing it instead of pivoting to improve his swim! He’s on fire right now

    7. Great showing from Sam again. No chance for the rest. Everyone who has the chance to work together with him on the bike, should do so. Otherwise they'd have no chance in the race overall.
