along the sea, not very far from Marseille is the calanques national park it is a vertical universe with more than 5000 climbing routes it is a climbing paradise this limestone massif has been sculpted with an astonishing way with caves and somewhat steep passages I told myself that I was going to spend a week there far from the crowds, should I take you? hello today we are near Marseille there is some sun and the goal is to discover the calanques (creeks) we are heading towards Marseilleveyre and then we will go along the entire blue coast there it is April 1st and I am accompanied by Clément Hello Montagnons team! Here we go, Massilia he is coming with us on the first days in Marseille so we are going to enjoy this very nice sun This massif has a rather particular ecosystem, the soil is almost non-existent, the plants plunge their roots into the faults and cracks of the cliffs and scree the path to the summit is technical, despite its low altitude the characteristics of this massif make it a mountain terrain the summit culminates at 432 m you can see Marseille the sea and the creeks there is a cave there it goes nowhere Hi, I’m Pierre, 10 years of experience in caving and today I’m taking you to visit the Calanques of Marseille, we’ve just found the first traces of a Paleolithic game, a kind of tic-tac-toe what he was doing against the walls it’s quite impressive I invite you to come and see and now we are going to pass level 5 of our training so here I am going to present to you the standard equipment of any experienced speologist the Forclaz camera finally, Forclaz lamp with several lighting options which as you can see is no longer necessary in this place I am really happy to be accompanied by an expert in the matter (no) so like any limestone massif there is quite a bit caving which is also done in the Calanques of Marseille because the water has dug holes everywhere the calanques are particularly known for their beaches thousands of people pour into them every day in the summer the paths are marked by erosion the smooth roots and the polished rocks this massif is home to 83 plant species which are either protected or threatened the fauna is not left out with many seabirds and remarkable nesting birds the calanques are also several thousand hectares of marine area in this part of the park, 14 rare and fragile habitats are present there are astonishing species under the surface the cliffs form an immense canyon which plunges towards the abyss, more than 1500 m (5 000 ft) deep at the very south of Marseille, is Cap Croisette, here the land meets the sea, there are crosses erected in memory of the victims of the shipwrecks, we finish the day at Les Goudes, we took a nice little tour in the somewhat alpine heights which are a bit think of Corsica, a coast a little weathered by the passage and a beautiful cape at the bottom that’s the end of the first day it was very nice hop, second day today we’re going in the direction of the dead man’s plateau we’re going trying to do things that are a bit technical, tricky passages, that’s it yesterday we came by bike today we came by bus we test the different modes of mobility when they work well and this morning we’ve been talking about Sormiou for thousands of years this massive is full of history Here is the fountain of Voire, where when the Greeks arrived in Marseille they have negotiated food and drinks we go higher, in the heights here we arrived on the plateau of the Dead Man and we go towards the Valkyries valley at the end of the plateau there is the first delicate passage of the day symbolized by a triangle on the map – yes it’s stupid to play "no hands" – lost here is the descent of death which kills the passage the most triangle of all the triangles without the rope he is lost ah well there without the rope it’s more difficult there, you have to throw yourself to the side ah but are you really doing it on the rope?! a little more challenge! that’s it’s still not easy, it deserves the triangle of the plateau, we follow the coast descending towards the calanques a little lower, the path passes at the foot of the cliffs we continue to descend towards the more technical passages we are came back down from the heights of Marseilleveyre and there we continue in "edge of cliffs" mode with the aim of making triangles, delicate passages And there, pwa, it’s super nice triangle triangle triangle they made slippery rock so there we took a dotted path to go to the Escu cave so since a while ago we have been following the cliffs there are really a lot of climbing routes you should know that the three most practiced sports in the calanques historically and still today it is hiking, climbing and natural diving so the goal of the natural park is to try to preserve that and to keep these practices and to protect the park from other practices which could degrade the environment a little more on the other hand, that’s kind of the main characteristic of the calanques it’s hot! here we are at the beginning of April and my watch indicates 30°C and the feeling, it is not far There we arrived towards Sormiou and there is a small sign which says that there were men from Cro-magnon who lived 37 m below current sea level at the time when the sea was lower and we are going to go home and we will come back tomorrow for the rest Here, third day, direction the Sormiou cove – We are joined by Benjamin – Hello Today we are going towards Mont Puget passing through small calanques this will be the challenge of the day swimming in three coves we start with the most accessible and the most frequented the regulatory splash done, we leave there, we leave the Sormiou calanque, heading to Morgiou we have not finished the day – We are only at the beginning – Where is the Col de la Chandelle? Do you see the big bar of stones? And the little chimney on the left? – Is it between the two? – On the left Well, come on, challenge of the three calanques (splash) it is warmer than just now (11°C – 52°F ? 😁) here, the few strips of sand are saturated with people in the calanques, civilization strikes back we frolic to the next calanque one last splash, and we win the challenge there, we are above a calanque which is already full there are around fifty people in summer, at one time, there were 3000 people per day currently there is a 500 people limit but it’s already huge it must be packed in the summer we leave the calanques to find the heights of the massif The Col de la Chandelle offers a magnificent panorama the arrival at the top of Mount Puget gives us a superb 360° view I say goodbye to Clément and Benjamin who go down a chimney towards Luminy so I said goodbye to Clément and I’m heading to Cassis there is about 10 km (6 mi) it feels like it’s the calanques there I drank 3 liters of water today and I think I’m getting sunstroke I should have taken a cap, probably there it is, fourth day in the calanques I’m leaving there again today towards the ridges we return to Mount Puget and then we’ll go back down towards the cliffs and calanques still on the ridges, it will be very nice along the ridge path, many cliffs it is the ideal place for bird nests well I forgot to take lunch so I eat a little ratatouille from the local producer with a superb view there is not much shade in the calanques so it is a good idea to take a break in the shade at midday as in many limestone massifs the massif of calanques conceals magnificent arches those are hidden in the cliffs above the Calanques, a few eagles and a magnificent view there, end of the ridge path I ended up there above the calanque d’En-vau it’s quite interesting because above the calanque there were lots of birds of prey you should know that in the natural park there are about 40 eagles today, direction Cap Canaille for the last day in the Calanques of Marseille located between Cassie and La Ciotat , Cap Canaille is recognizable by by its ocher color its maritime cliffs are the highest in France and are among the highest in Europe the trail is located just above the 400 m (1300 ft) of void at the end of the Cap, a semaphore then, the descent towards the city there you go, I arrived at the end of Cap Canaille in a few minutes there I will arrive at La Ciotat So it was very nice the Calanques of Marseille very vertical, with a little air of Corsica very dry there the idea is to go towards the blue coast which is normally less busy we will check that the Blue Coast, located on the other side of Marseille also has calanques and cliffs voilà, two trains later, I am in Niolon it took two hours so we’re heading to the blue coast and more particularly the direction of the customs officers’ path which is also called the coastal path it is a path which dates from 1789 during the Revolution when it there were a lot of taxes on alcohol, tobacco etc. there was a lot of smuggling and therefore the creation of this trail the entire coast is served by the train well originally I wanted to leave from Niolon, but there was the waiter at the bar "La canne bamboo" who told me that it was really worth it to go to l’Estaque so I’m going to do the little round trip there, it looks nice and then we go back in the other direction, towards Martigues, great, we already have the atmosphere of the coastline a bit there in fact we move away very quickly from the city we take a few steps and we are already in somewhat wild places the coastline is dotted with defensive devices from different eras the path is punctuated with arches of the railway line, calanques, and caves well I arrived at l’Estaque it’s funny because there are lots of tunnels like that and if I continue further below, there are plenty of them there others I don’t know when it dates from but in any case it’s made of reinforced concrete so there I return to Niolon, I went as far as Estaques it’s very nice this little path one or two technical passages but that there you go so I’m leaving again from Niolon and then we go along the coast, again and again with always the arches there, along today there are really hundreds of people it’s impossible to relax every 30 seconds it there is a group of 20-30 people passing by and it is April month, we are not in the middle of summer I think that what made me feel alone in the Calanques of Marseille is that I went there in the middle of the week (outside holidays) but clearly the weekend is not frequentable, in order to relax at least There you go, arrived at the end of the Côte Bleue so I have done almost all of the wild calanques from La Ciotat to La Redonne, so very nice, very vertical universe, very hot also here we are in April it would be 30°C with very humid heat so it’s a great place that I recommend outside season, outside of holidays rather winter, or spring in any case superb discovery I strongly not recommend it for the summer and all busy periods these are places which suffer a little from all these massive crowds and then, we are looking for peacful moments too when you go into nature and that’s not the place for that I think, even if it’s very pretty what else can I say.. I hope you enjoyed it if you liked it, feel free to press the like button to subscribe, if you want to see other videos in the same style see you soon and mountain well, bye!
