This was as lucky as it was unexpected. I had no idea these two were in town. I was cycling out to Sighthill along the canal towpath. At Slateford viaduct I got off and walked. Some folk do cycle it but I didn’t fancy an early bath in the canal.

About a third of the way along I heard the unmistakable sound of a steam train and had plenty time to get the phone out.

This is the only point in the route where the canal is both in line with and higher than the railway. If I had been literally anywhere else on the route I’d have seen either nothing or a glimpse through the trees.

Train was The Great Britain XVI which was travelling the length and breadth of the UK between Saturday 13th April and Sunday 21st April
