Great Yarmouth – Used to be my favourite place to visit, BUT WHAT HAS HAPPENED, let’s take a look.

Like many coastal towns, Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, has spent decades fighting deprivation. Issues such as high unemployment, below-average salaries and poor education attainment have passed through multiple generations, particularly since the 1980s when traditional seaside holidays started to decline.

GOOD POINTS: The Sea Front is looking good.

hi everybody and welcome back to another video yesterday we’re in Norfolk and it’s Great Yarmouth so i’ I was here last year great armouth and it was actually chucking down with rain but the sun shines out a little bit now and uh yeah the weather’s good so what we’re going to do today I’m going to go around Great Yarmouth and see if there’s any changes so I’ve been going to Great Yarmouth for years and years and years with my Mom and Dad we used to stay just down the road at box or Caravan site and uh we used to walk all the way in all the way into town all the way down to the beach nearly Every Blooming night and it was a long way that was when you got little legs butth so today I thought I’d come back and have a good look around to see what’s actually happening I was here last year if you can see if you’ve seen the video I say I got soaking went through and even me umbrella turned inside out it was terrible but today I can go around filming and not bother about the raid there’s quite a few people about and I can see there’s a few changes but uh is it as bad as what people say now Great Yarmouth as it gone really downhill cuz people are saying it is one of the worst places to actually visit great armys now uh it’s horrible there nothing to do the shops are closed it’s dirty so let’s check it out for ourselves see if it has changed since last year on the years before when I uh where Marketplace car Parks I’m not sure when the Market’s actually on here now used to be a massive Market here and uh yeah we used to come around when we was younger buying all the stuff and that but but uh just looking around uh this building here is all new now so and it looks really good so there was just actually doing this last year it was all closed off but it’s all up and running now all open so there’s like takeaways and stuff like that there’s not a lot of them open at the moment so they’re probably only open till about 4:00 and also when the Market’s on I’m not sure if they actually open at night some of them as well cuz the we always used to stop off with fishing chips at night uh at one of the bars what they used to be here so yeah can remember what it used to look like years ago yeah so what we’re going to do we’re going to walk from this Market bit and I’m going to walk right down the center of great y right down to brania pier and yeah let’s see if there’s any changes that’s actually happening what was different in great yor and uh if you used to come here a long time ago and you haven’t been for a while and uh you want to see what it looks like yeah well keep tuned in cuz uh you know I haven’t been for a year and uh things do look a bit different and there’s a lot of people about as well cuz it is the school holidays as well so there’s a lot of families here so a lot of the campsites are actually open so there’ be a lot of people staying at like Vox all and whatever so yeah let’s go see what’s happening right so we still got the shopping center just over the way there say yeah so Market gate but uh we’ve just come through it there’s a lot of shops actually still closed in there so I’m not going to bother going back in there with the camera showing you it cuz it’s it’s really really quiet so what we’ll do we’ll go down this way and then when make a left and that takes you right down to the Sea front but uh not overly impressed in what’s happening to great armor like every other place seesi place it’s uh looking to be a little bit run down for what I’ve seen up to now but it is a shame cuz it never used to be like this but uh some people love coming to great armor so some people will never come back but uh yeah let’s keep going and uh let’s see what we can see and what’s actually happening see if there’s anything new in it out it does look down in the seafront yeah so we’re we’re just going to nip across to the Victoria arcade cuz this used to be a lovely arcade this did with loads of nice little shops so I wonder if there’s a they’re still in there like they used to be so let’s just going to have a look does look a bit grubby outside to what it used to look yeah this is the Victoria arcade so a lot of the shop seems to be closed today so it is a Tuesday so do they close early on a Tuesday bit strange really but uh for them all to be short it must be uh yeah because it’s it’s a Tuesday through Wednesday I’m I’m lost with my days today yeah there’s not a lot happening at all down here anymore that’s a shame is it cuz yeah all these shops used to be full right yeah so that’s a bit of a damn shame of the Victoria shopping arcade there I wish I’d have got some old photos that can actually show you uh from like the early ’90s or what it used to look like when we used to go through we we did have some photos over the kids going through there with like little their little roller skates on and stuff like that you know the shops used to be full and it used to be really clean and tidy but that’s really run down now that such a shame so yeah what’s happening Great Yarmouth what is happening so across the way there so yeah you got Market Gate Shopping Center uh Burger King and stuff at the end and that’s been there a while can actually come in to one side and down the escalator but I say there’s a lot of places actually closing there so it’s not even worth bothering going through it’s a damn shame that is as well so I can remember when that first opened years [Music] ago right so what we’re going to do make a way down towards the seafront so yeah britania Pier straight in front of us this looks like it’s uh quite a few shops down here that’s actually open few closed but uh there still a lot of people about which is a good thing I know it’s the uh it’s the holidays at least it’s sunshin and it’s not raining but things do look like they’re actually closing earlier people are putting the shutters down on that so it’s not even oh yeah it’s just half 4 at the moment so when I came down here last year I was talking to you about the wax works that used to be here so can you remember the wax works that used to be across there so the House of Wax so uh wonder what happened to all the wax works it was in there us have some right good fun in there when we was kids yeah that’s no longer there and also I can remember as well the Year this place actually burnt down so this is all uh changed now it’s all nice and new it just looks like some nice shops in there as well yeah it was a bit late getting here so I am a bit disappointed that a lot of the shops aren’t actually open I mean it’s only half 4 you thought they’d be open till at least 5 6:00 being the holidays but yeah a lot of them are shoting say if you’ve been been here for years you can always remember seeing this joke shop this is a really good joke shop and uh this guy being sick in the booket so check him out he but yeah it’s great to actually come to the seaside and get all your jokes as well to take back for the kids the kids love love it going in there say that Shop’s been there for years they got uh Potter’s Rock Factory so yeah we used to watch them doing the rocking there I don’t know if they’re doing any at the moment used to be good to watch them they look like they are now so yeah they used to roll the Rock in there and turn into the sticks there’s people everywhere guess you can see so a lot of people on holiday but they’re shutting the shops early very strange right so we’re filming in the Easter holidays so yeah it’s the Tuesday bank holiday Monday yesterday so if you’re on a holiday area at the moment and uh watching this put it in the message in the comments below to say that you was actually in y armouth while we was filming so you can see BR B Pier straight in front of you so that was uh into some really good shows in that we have so I’ve seen uh little large in there um Cannon and ball yeah all sorts of shows we’ve actually seen in there that looks no not seen that before we got like a grill upstairs so you got nice views of everybody walking past so we we’ll have a look see if the uh Fairground is actually open the little children’s like Fairground Joy land but this was a lot better doing it all pedestrian eyes here as well I can remember it was just the cars going up and down but yeah if you watch my video from last year it was chucking it down with rain so we got the uh Cinema across the way there as well there loads of hotels as well down that way and they’ve even got the little sand train out as well yeah to take you down to the pleasure Park which is all the way down there so it is quite a fairway down there right so we’re at britania Pier look at the ax that’s actually on so we’ve got to Supreme Queen totally tener Jim Davidson so Jim Davidson I think comes back here every year same as Jimmy Carr does as well Jimmy car’s always there and we’ve always always got chubby Brown as well but yeah lots of stuff going on all all through the year so yeah tickets £ 3750 see Jimmy car and 26 50 to uh see Jim Davidson but I’d actually pay more to see Jim Davidson than Jimmy car believe it or not I think Jimmy Davidson’s loads better but yeah shwy Wy there but half of them are not here no more I think there’s only one of them that’s still actually here right so this is the way to britania pier in here so last year I actually did a fish and chip shop review so I had fishing chips in this place last year it looks like it’s been done up a little bit looks a little bit different to what it used to look like looks really nice in there now so yeah did a review in there if you’ve not seen it yet go back to last year and have a look right we even got the donkeys on the beach today this is Great Yarmouth Beach and also we got the Arabian Night races look the yeah it’s turned a beautiful day again today got joy Land There we got the big wheel halfway down there used to be a like a um star flyer as well not sure if that’s here like it used to be then further right down is where the pleasure Beach is if you’ve never been before but yeah just check out the [Music] [Music] donkeys right so we got the fun fair at the end of the paer for the kids there’s also DOD gums as well like a little pirate ship that looks good got a thought that was real [Music] then yes they’re having fun on the dods look great stuff so yeah this is right at the end of the pier so you used to be able to walk down to the bottom of this pier a little bit but yeah it’s still closed off they haven’t done anything with it so over the years the Sea’s taken it away but it’s lovely and calm out there with there is it yeah the end of the pier so there’s even people in the sea down there so there’s no big waves it’s nice and calm it’s good to go in the sea into yeah in the F Well beginning of April yeah second of April today yeah lovely Beach is it yeah so he’s plenty of room then you got the sand dunes further down a bit further down that way is actually cased on sea where we’re actually staying so if if you haven’t seen that yet we’re doing a hotel review in casus want to check that out it’s the old Hall uh Spar Hotel uh with a swimming pool check that one out right so uh in the ’90s we all sat on here with my family with my mom and dad all having an ice cream and uh yeah I’ve got it on photo I think it’s on photo or video but I might try and dig it out once again and uh show you what it was like I hope I can find it so yeah my dad r so brings back a lot of memories sitting here eating ice cream with the family yeah so we got joy Landing here so I’m not going to go in film CU there’s a lot of kids in there on the stuff they have the snails and stuff like that there I tell you what we will go in and we’ll show you the uh the spinning tubs yeah this has been here for years so this is the spinning tub where we was kids we used to come on this and had loads of fun so I don’t think it was open last year when I came G but it is now and everybody’s having a great time on it can you remember oh it’s the tub twist can you remember when you was kids put it in the comments below if you can remember coming on these years and years ago right so we’ve got a couple of tokens and we’re going to go on the tubs so hopefully he’ll let us film on them as well join me on the tubs right so we’re on the tobs so God I used to come on these in the 80s so yeah mom and dad used to bring us on these a long long time ago oh cranking me that jerking a bit is it so these have been here for years and years they must have opened like in the is it the 50s I’m not too sure but you can remember when they actually opened oh my God I just had an ice cream as well so I’m not going to be sick oh I’m going a bit dizzy oh my God so we with at the moment say say it’s for kids it’s not for kids is it but what a great ride eh my God he’s never ended oh my god oh flipping Nora I’m not going to be able to walk in a minute I’m going to be I’m not going to be sick oh my God this has been a long long time ago since I was on it oh my God I can’t remember it’s spinning that fast before Oh I can’t bloody see a thing now I’m spinning too much much yeah so this end of Great Yarmouth seems to be a lot better than the town end so down here it’s it hasn’t changed a lot new quite a few new things down here and it does look a lot better it’s a shame the town has gone downhill so much up there but uh yeah you if you come to Great AR you probably actually stay down here most of the time cuz there’s low to do all the hotels are down here as well and uh yeah there’s lot of places to eat and stuff and the kids love it down I mean yeah God them them spinning tubs there oh my God and I just had an ice cream as well so I was lucky I didn’t lose that ice cream I know yeah it’s all looking good down here so uh I’m not disappointed down here I was disappointed like I say further up and uh it’s a shame really the town’s gone downhill a little bit but it’s like everywhere you go in it around the country all the towns are just disappearing aren’t they so I’m not sure if they still do but we used to have um they used to have the awesome carts as well so like they have at blackpole they used to have them at great yor so we they probably still do have them here and you know they’ve got like these places for them actually to be but they’ll probably come out to to uh in the year later on in the year they’ll probably still come out and uh you can actually go on the all the got the Empire across the way there so I can remember when there’s actually shows on at the Empire I think it’s like a crazy golf in there now like used to be it live music I think it changes that many times when you come but yeah loads of movement arcades down here so yeah we’ll wander I think we might even wander towards the uh fun fair so uh see as it’s all open down here I thought it might a lot I thought a lot of the places might have been shut down here today but now it’s all open all good yeah check out the Crazy Golf there that looks good doesn’t it I think there was actually doing that up last time I come down here but yeah it’s all open hope Bo’s having fun blackpool’s got the tower so it was great yor so you used to be able to go up that Tower but uh last time I came it was actually like a nightclub so I’m not sure if anybody actually uses the tower anymore but I I have been up there uh before up the lift years and years ago and so you get a good view of everywhere but if you want the views get yourselves on that big wheel eh straight in front of us so we’ve got the uh Gold Rush and Caesar’s Palace Amusement arcade but just check out the architecture above though look at I don’t if you can just say it but the Sun’s shining this way but yeah the britania lady there look and you know they’ve still kept it looking oldy World they how it used to looking years and years ago but they’ve actually spoiled it put in the amusement AR kades underneath though aren’t they yeah so yes looking really good over there still but at least they’re keeping it nice and tidy yes there’s quite a few uh like the fish and chip shops here and the uh the ice creams and stuff it’s pretty new uh you know when I came last year there W A lot of that actually open yeah we’ve got the circus across the way so the hippo Drome over there a lot just behind the movement arcade I went there years ago as well at night this looks absolutely stunning at night like the Golden nuget Nugget and night look like Las Vegas they come down here at night see all these flashing lights going yeah it looks totally different but there is a lot more stuff down here than what they used to be it used to be like a bit of a gap every now and again but they seem to have filled it now with lots of different stuff so you’ve got Harry Ramon’s over there look world famous fishing Chi shop but next door to it it was the old windmill theater and it looks like it’s actually closed down which is a damn shame is it eh looks all run down it used to be a great place that day at night all used to be lit up and the windmill used to be going around lit up as well I know uh my brother’s been to few shows there over the years but yeah it looks like it’s all run down now but they’ve got a big wheel there massive big wheel I’m not sure if that’s open at the moment there’s nobody on it at the moment haven’t seen it turning the lights are on probably a bit later on you’ll get a few people on there but yeah it’s quite a big big wheel a’t it yeah so if it’s raining uh you’ve got the sea life center there look so yeah it’s quite a big sea life center that is in there been in there a few times as well so yeah sea life center a great Yar Earth yeah we picked the right day today it’s uh it’s not raining for a change so last time I was there I got absolutely soaking wet through but this is a shame is it how this building’s gone down a little bit down hill so one day somebody will come along and uh actually uh renovate it or make it look nice again so the Winter Gardens used some really good acts in there over the years but they actually put Wellington Pier at the side of it as well so that got modernized a few years ago that did a lot of people like going in there as well to play on all the slots and stuff not sure but they might even have shows at the end of here now at Wellington Pier not too sure I know there’s a bowling alley in there anyway it looks really nice and clean is it down here compared to the other end of Great Yarmouth and I was really shocked when I actually uh walked into the uh the like the market area in that I didn’t think it would be as bad as it was a real big damn shame that is right so great y we’ still got a model Village show you outside we’re not going to go in but uh look at check out these circus you just see the little hours through there as well in the bars a little bit so let’s see how much it is to get in the model Village so under three is are free children Age 3 years to 12 years 5.99 adults $9.99 the prices for the model Village that’s not quite yeah that’s not open at the moment so I’m not sure if that’s closed uh today if it’s been open earlier we’ve walked down to the fair as you can see it’s up and running I’m not sure the prices on how much actually getting and how much the rides are but I think it’s actually closing in a bit so we’re not going to go in today but yeah maybe come back another day and go on it but look at these guys having fun on that yeah and then the wooden roller coaster so this roller coaster is absolutely brilliant so there’s actually a little guy in the middle a little guy a guy in The Middle on the brakes so we’ve been going on that roller coaster for years and years and yeah I will come back one day and go on it again right can actually see the roller coaster going up there at the moment so yeah can see the bre man in the middle there look how strange is that having a bre man in the middle has right fun on that all day long they yeah a few of them screaming on there yes it’s a good job we didn’t actually pay to go in I mean it’s what time is it now it’s quter to 6 so and it actually does shut at 6:00 we’ve just announced it but yeah we will come back one day and have a go on all the rides this is great yarm of pleasure Beach so there you go then that’s our take on Great Yarmouth and uh bit disappointed in that town uh you know when we us like I said earlier when we used to come years ago it used to be lovely up that town and it’s really gone downhill but the rest of it down here on the sea front is looking really good since I came before there’s actually quite a few new things actually open I mean we midweek uh in April uh a lot of the things do actually close early in the week L like the fun fair shots at 6:00 but and I think Joy land as well that shot early as well but the mement arcades are open and you can get stuff to eat and stuff like that as well but yeah lovely day lovely time and I’ve enjoyed coming back and every time I come back to Y it does bring back a lot of memories when we used to come in mom and dad
