The Salzkammergut is a stunningly beautiful region in Austria with pristine blue lakes encircled by the Dachstein Mountains – the foothills of the Alps. We traveled by train from Munich to Salzburg and then on to our hotel in Abersee. We cycled mostly on quiet bike paths away from the traffic.

Out tour itinerary included cycling along Lake Wolfgangsee to St. Gilgen where Mozart’s mother was born,

Lake Mondsee where we visited the wedding church from the Sound of Music movie,

On to Lake Attersee, the largest lake in the region -where we overnighted in Ebensee,

Cycled along the Dachstein foothills to the beautiful town of Gmunden on Lake Traunsee where we stopped for lunch and walked along the beautiful esplanade,

From there, we biked along Lake Traunsee down to Traunkirken where we visited the beautiful church where with the majestic Fisherman’s Pulpit made entirely of gold and silver! We over-nighted in Traunkirken,

We followed the River Traun to the former imperial city of Bad Ischl – the summer residence of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph,

Then cycled along wooded bike paths to Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Region, with it’s historic salt mines, picturesque village and and dramatic mountain viewsl We spent 2 nights in Hallstatt, visiting the salt mines and doing a 25K ride around Lake Hallstattersee,

Next day, headed back to Bad Ischl along the Brine Pipeline trail. then followed the former Roman Road to Strobl where we stopped for ice cream. Finally, we took the bike trail back to the village of Abersee. A great time was had by all!

Many thanks go out to our great tour guide, Ilse from BestSeller Reisen Tours. She was the best!
