During this cycling trip, I wanted to discover one of the main rivers of the South-West of France: The Tarn This river meanders through five departments in the middle of landscapes marked by its passage. From the source at Mont-Lozère to the confluence with the Garonne, I suggest you discover this river by bike. A six-day trip, 520km, on roads and paths. Here we go ! Let’s go discover the Tarn together, in my own way… I start here in Mende, in Lozère At the beginning of June, in Mende, it’s not yet very hot in the morning. It’s 6:30 a.m., it’s 6°C. and I’m in shorts! I’ll warm up quickly. because here I go up the Lot towards Bleymard and from there, I will begin the ascent of the Col de Finiels, (Finiels Pass) to go to the source of the Tarn. and that should warm me up! The first kilometers are through the Lot Valley. As the sun comes out, the profile of the road gradually rises. This climb to the Col de Finiels (Finiels pass) is not that hard. The slopes are reasonable: between 6, 7, 8% max It’s quite regular. And then, speed is not important, as long as you get to the top! As we approached the summit, the landscape changed completely. I am above 1500m altitude and the flora is that of the mid-mountains. Here I am at the top of the Col de Finiels.(Finiels pass) But for all that, I am not yet at the source of the Tarn. To get there, I have to leave the road and cycle several kilometers on this path. Nothing is indicated, but I had spotted all this before leaving. Here, it is time for me to leave the bike and walk. That’s it, I’m there ! After going up this stream, I arrived here, and it is under piles of stones that the source of the Tarn is located. It is here that the water gushes out which will form this small stream then this large river. You can probably hear the water running behind me. It’s a magical moment. It’s crazy to be here, we’re really in the middle of nothing in this valley. There is absolutely no one there obviously. It’s a very, very nice moment of this trip. After the climb of this first part of the day, a very long descent begins here. As you can see behind me, I am in a transition phase, since I have completed the descent of the Col de Finiels, (Finials pass) and there I enter the Gorges du Tarn. They slowly begin to take shape behind me. And tomorrow, when I head towards Ste Enimie, it will truly be the heart of the Gorges du Tarn. The Tarn was just a stream a while ago. After this long descent, he has already changed a lot. Look, it’s now a small river. And this small river has carved out impressive Gorges here! The road winds along the cliff sides, I now arrive at one of the most beautiful villages in France: Ste Enimie. Even if it climbs as it should, it is good to walk the old cobblestone streets of the Tarn. The medieval village of Ste Enimie is truly a jewel of the Gorges du Tarn. This village of Ste Enimie is truly superb. The medieval village side, the little streets… It’s very, very nice. The bridge over the Tarn… Plus, they had privatized the village just for me! There was no one ! It was fantastic. There the sun is about to rise… which means that there are still some mists up on the plateau. But little by little it is becoming clearer. it’s going to be perfect. There I attack the ascent of the Col de Coperlac. So I’m going up there! (at the top of the Gorges) The more I advance in the climb, the more I see the superb panorama that awaits me at the summit. The climb itself is already very nice with its beautiful road. That’s it, I’m reaching the top. What a view of the Gorges and St Chély du Tarn!!! I am here at the top of the Causse, and I must now go back down to the very bottom of the Gorges. And for that, why not leave the road to get off the beaten track a little… There, I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into! I think I was too confident at the time! I had seen a path on a map to go back down to St Chély instead of taking the same route in the opposite direction, that is to say returning to Ste Enimie, then taking the road which runs along the Tarn. I said to myself that this would be nicer that way… The path is not very passable by bike (and with panniers) Here I am only at the beginning, and we have to go back down to the bottom, it will be long. Come on, I’ll try! After this descent towards St Chély, a path really reserved for experienced mountain bikers, it was actually a rocks area. I’m happy to be back on the road! The road here is magnificent. It is dug into the rock in places, and the ocher colors offer pretty reflections in the sun. After changing department, and entering in Aveyron, I arrive in Millau. The contrast here is astonishing. The modernity of the viaduct in the background contrasts with the old bridge and its mill in the city center. Over the centuries, the influence of the water of the Tarn River has marked the city through two activities: Pottery, and tanning, that is to say the work of skins. This also allowed the development of glove making, elevating Millau to the rank of capital of gloves and leather. But for me, it’s impossible to pass through Millau without taking a detour via the viaduct. I am at the viewpoint of the A75 motorway area of the Millau Viaduct, and this Millau Viaduct that we see behind me is really impressive! Its dimensions are dizzying! 2,400km long… and it is really very, very high, you can’t even see the Tarn passing below! And we must also recognize that this Millau Viaduct still looks great! Aesthetically speaking, they didn’t fail, I really find it very beautiful. And seen from here, the view is just magnificent. I confirm that seen from below, it is just as impressive! It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like during construction, because it’s really super high!
