Round 14 of the 1990 FIM 500 cc World Road Racing Championships took place at the Hungaroring near Budapest. The famous ‘fast four’ of Eddie Lawson (Yamaha), Wayne Gardner (Honda), Kevin Schwantz (Suzuki) and Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) were threatened by a young Australian called Mick Doohan (Rothmans Honda).

    Riding faster and faster, the determined Aussie roared his way towards the big time to take his first win in the Championship series.

    Gardner and Duan are up there Christian Saro and Alexandra baros around that left-hander and uh Randy mola’s in trouble mamola hits the back of another machine and goes careering off the track into the sand trap and Randy mola’s Hungarian Grand Prix well and truly Over Wayne Rainey is still out front ahe of Eddie Lawson but Kevin Schwans is coming under intense pressure now for that third place it seems only a matter of time before schwanz succumbs to the power of the Honda the Honda goes right away around the outside and Kevin schwanz can’t believe his eyes a superb maneuver puts mcdan up a place and into third position and now will he be able to pick off the two Yamahas ahead of him Eddie Lawson on the number one bike and he’s right on Lawson’s tail now and there’s no doubt about it mcdan wants to win this race he wants to get past Eddie Lawson that’s the battle for second place and a fast and furious battle it is too rainy’s out front and he’s opened up quite a gap but Lawson’s about to fall to the Relentless progress of mcdan and Duan takes second place but can Lawson grab it back on the corner no he can’t he goes wide it looks like he made a mistake there and it’s still rainy from Doan and you get the impression that it’s only a matter of time before the Australian goes through to take the lead in this Hungarian Grand Prix he’s the fastest man out on the track without any shadow of a doubt now can he slipstream the Yamaha down the straight that’s exactly what he tries to do he pulls alongside and there’s a new race leader in the shape of mcdan the Australian leads for rothman’s Honda the American relegated to second place for the malber Yamaha team mcdan leads the Hungarian Grand Prix the penultimate Grand Prix of the 1990 season now can he cling on until the checker flag to notch up his first ever Grand Prix Victory this is Wayne Gardner in fifth position oh and Gardner goes absolutely sideways oh and out of the race is gone Wayne Rainey the world champion the new world title holder is cruising out of the Hungarian Grand Prix and that is a sensation because it’s the first first time this year that team Roberts have had any trouble with their Machinery but it’s a magnificent victory for mcdan and the Australian will have a grin from ear to ear as he heads towards the checkered flag to be declared the winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix the first 500cc winner of a Grand Prix in Hungary Lawson takes second place some 25 seconds back it’s an absolutely delighted mcdan who wins his first ever Grand Prix race [Music]
