Today we’re going to talk about insects and specifically ants, Bernard Werber’s Ants, you heard that right! This new game really has the potential to leave us speechless as it’s a 100% next-generation game of action and strategy, leveraging our famous Unreal Engine 5, of course! I’m sure you’re gonna love this game because it’s gonna be revolutionary! Let me explain why! Empire of the Ants was successfully led by a 100% French team! Based in La Rochelle, the small team of 30 developers and artists from Tower Five is committed to delivering an immersive and visually stunning experience, with breathtaking photorealistic rendering. The idea of turning Bernard Werber’s Ants trilogy into a video game was the result of careful consideration. With technological advancements in the video game industry, especially with Unreal Engine 5, it became possible to faithfully recreate the universe of ants with an insane level of detail and realism. In this game, you play as the heroic ant from the novel, determined to guide her community to new horizons. Bernard Werber, the author, who is also a fan of strategy games, provided several feedback throughout the development, particularly on the design of the ant you embody, which will bear scars reflecting her actions and journey throughout the game. They will contribute to giving depth to the character and enhancing immersion in the game world. The first impact is undeniably visual right from the menu. The visual quality and realism of "Empire of the Ants" are so impressive that one could easily mistake the game for a documentary. Meticulous details, immersive environments, and realistic animations contribute to creating a striking visual experience that faithfully captures the very essence of ant life in nature. Sunlight and temperature will have a significant impact on gameplay. These environmental factors will influence the vigor of ant legions, as well as their ability to move, search for food, and defend against predators. For example, a sunny and warm day could make ants more active and efficient in their tasks, while a rainy or cold day could slow them down or weaken them. Players will need to take these weather variations into account and adapt their strategy accordingly to ensure the success of their colony. The PS5 was initially chosen to develop and truly test the game, notably because of its proven capabilities during the release of the Unreal Engine 5 preview with the Matrix demo, which showcased the new revolutionary processes Nanite and Lumen. Technically speaking, Tower Five heavily relied on these technologies to enhance this photorealistic quality. Indeed, we are talking about a macro universe, with a lot of details and a huge number of meshes displayed in real-time. Nanite perfectly covers this issue, as well as Virtual Textures, which allow displaying insane texture resolutions, with intelligent stream management. It’s great to finally see the full potential of Unreal Engine 5 and its incredible features in a next-gen video game!! The key to the game lies in the graphic quality. The developers made an artistic choice by focusing on the quality of pixels rather than frame rate, which reflects their artistic vision. It’s likely that the frame rate will be lower in quality mode to prioritize pixel quality and lighting. Indeed, I think for this kind of game, it’s preferable to prioritize richness of details and lighting quality as these elements are essential for creating a captivating experience. The game becomes more engaging and allows players to fully immerse themselves in the world of ants. The gameplay of "Empire of the Ants" stands out from classic strategy games by allowing us to embody a single character with third-person control, which is quite rare in this genre of game. While walking, our character clings to all elements of the environment, but running can compromise this grip. Additionally, it’s possible to jump to propel oneself. The goal of the game is to control territory by capturing areas and building nests. Night will also fall in the main campaign, adding an additional dimension to the experience. Although most maps take place outdoors, some passages will take place inside anthills, offering very different atmospheres. Dynamic global illumination, thanks to Lumen in particular, will make all the difference here! There will also be hidden elements and nods to human presence, perceptible but not necessarily visible directly. For example, one might notice small cookies or rocks placed in certain settings, left by humans and used by developers to create interesting game elements. This attention to detail adds a unique charm to the experience, reinforcing the feeling of a forest teeming with life. I hope these little ants manage to escape the traps that other insects and spiders of all kinds will lay for them. You’ll just have to try out this beautiful French exclusive that will be released soon in 2024, and see you very soon! Ciao
