[Music] this is my house and this is me outside my [Music] house life here is fine so why am I thinking about doing something odd odd is the wrong word I’m trying not to scare myself the right word would be scary why am I thinking about doing something scary something that would risk [Music] this but the one thing I’ve learned about filming is that when you’re scared just film anyway because if it turns out all right you’d be glad you did and if it doesn’t turn out all right filming is probably the least of your worries [Music] I think they’re building an Athletics track here I’ve lived here years and now they decid to build one 2 minutes from my house great timing so today I’m going to ride my bike past every house I’ve ever lived in 50 years of Home dwelling in one big old loop we’re getting close to my first house now this out here is where I’d come and play when I was a kid with my brother just beyond the trees it’s all houses now when I was a kid you could just walk for Miles we’d be out here all day and you just go home when you’re hungry if you showed 1980s 7year old me just what’s left I’d have cried hey I want to cry do you cry in 1980 because of a field you’re going to have a tough time at [Music] school so my first 19 years were across the road here one of the houses over there me my brother my parents it was a regular house but it had a huge huge Garden I couldn’t throw a ball from one end to the other I could now because they knocked a house down a few years after my parents moved away they went in and then built on all the gardens so there there is no Garden anymore we used to play rugby on this bit of grass in front of me all the kids from this side of the road versus all the kids from my side of the road just playing rugby up and down this Main Road ball bouncing in front of the cars no health and safety no one got run over no one from my side of the road got run over some kids got run over it’s a busy [Music] road so I moved out of home because my girlfriend was pregnant so I moved in with her parents and her obviously not just her parents that be weird and it was Handley cuz they lived right around the corner from the little swimming pool that I worked at as a lifeguard in this beautiful old building that had been there for over 100 years the sign still says swimming bars but they’ve turned it into it’s a block of flats that’s a little hatch we used to pay to go you swim is nothing sacred cemetry Junction it’s famous for y Bam Bam ye kebabs and uh Ricky jaas 2010 film and [Music] me okay interesting movie trivia C Junction the movie wasn’t always called that Ricky Jas wanted to call it marathan the PR but the credential Assurance company told him no he wanted to call it that because at one point in the 70s and the 80s everybody in Reading worked for the pr my mates did my girlfriend did I never did I tried to work for the pr to sell life assurance and I failed the psychometric test how is that possible have you seen for Wall Street how do you fail to work in that industry morei APR close to Windsor but the property is less it keeps the businesses of Britain great it’s got Europe’s biggest trading estate it doesn’t matter where you’re from you want to work then come along so the first house I actually bought is just around the corner I would have been maybe 21 22 and I was only able to buy it because a different life insurance company not the credential did give me a job bonus only no basic salary and I was rubbish but that didn’t matter because back then you just put no income declared on your mortgage application and they gave you the money anyway those were the days jumpers for gold poost so once I got the hang of selling life insurance I did quite well suck on that credential and bought a bigger house moved to this one just behind those trees and this was cool here backed onto these fields and when I started to get in shape eventually I’d come straight out the gate and I just run here mostly walked but did some running here this was cool fields there’s a river here about 10 years two dogs four kids it’s good didn’t want to leave here but life is complicated and do you know what else is complicated divorce so uh I moved into that little block of flats there not stopping at that one when I was at that little place over the road I was 39 and the mess I thought life was over and I’d come here every Saturday morning and do park run every Saturday didn’t always get faster but I got better here so once my divorce was sorted I rented a place just down there it was all right it was bigger have my kids and I was there about a year before I met Jen it’s the first place that we liveed together to be honest the house is horrible but uh right people anywhere can be [Music] okay and so after that one 8 years go now I moved to where I am now home for now all of the houses I’ve ever lived at have all been just a couple of minutes away been getting on the M4 and this is pretty [Applause] quiet I spent most of my life being able to hear the [Applause] M4 I hate it and the motorway runs by your door and you know just where you’re heading it’s equid distance between London and R 50 years just over 21 mil around reading might be time for something else which is where this all gets a bit scary because something else will something else be better what is better last year my fitness got better I was Stronger and faster I was better but I ended the year not feeling any better I know on social media that better normally just means lifting more or running quicker or being bigger but life is way more complex than that imagine I’ve just watched Top Gun three times in a row watching Iron Eagle next would be better than watching Top Gun again it would be close but it would be better Iron Eagle isn’t better it’s just better for me then I think when it comes to living in Reading I might just be ready to watch Iron Eagle and I can’t believe I’m even saying that let’s go for a walk [Music] if I was 10 years younger I’d move to a house that was a bit older and a bit more rural play it safe and then 10 years later go for it somewhere off grid somewhere scary do it a step at a [Music] time I don’t have time for steps I’m 50 do you know how I remember that I’m 50 apart from a mirror I sit on the bike in the office I sit on it in the office close my eyes and instantly I’m 19 years old I’m in the secondhand bike shop that bike would have been about 5 years old Top Gun would have been about 3 years old and I’m telling myself one day one day maybe 35 years it’s took took to get that bike 35 years life is short I don’t have time for one day may I don’t have time for anything so we’ve been looking at houses that are scary the Drone shots that the estate agent sends they’re epic but the houses are scary but then what’s scary people told me that traveling around Africa on my own was scary but was it really what’s the worst case break down I have to wait a couple of days for someone to come and get me quit my job for YouTube was that scary what was scary was staying another day in financial services that would been horrific you can’t put your butt in the camera that’s just offensive but this house move and it going wrong that is proper scary I will be old and broke probably divorced again in a house with Rising damp and bats in a 300y old attic so do I wait I can’t wait I can’t wait because because another 35 years will go and I’m not moving to a house with damp and bat at 85 life is like a theme park when you’re young it’s 9:00 a.m. and the place is just open and you can do what you want you got all day and then before you know it it’s half hour before the place closes and you have to really pick what you’re going to do next cuz you don’t got time for many more rides and when this place closes it doesn’t reopen and when I make a video there’s normally a message although I don’t always know if it’s for me or for an audience talking to audience wouldn’t it be cool to make content Fitness content out in the middle of nowhere where I can’t throw a ball off my land what’s the message I don’t know life is short do scary things do odd things take your pick [Music] yeah yeah yeah we would like to put an offering on it yep yeah yeah they told us about the bats [Music]

    1. My husband and I quit our secure teaching jobs in London, tried to sell our house and took our child out of school to have a year out in the south of France. Everyone told us that was scary! It was ducking incredible! Then we bought a 1850s house in North Yorkshire. Found an amazing place with a holiday let for some income on our land! Best thing ever. We now live within the boundary of the dales national park. You can imagine how stunning it is up here. We are hundreds of miles away from our families. People told
Is that was scary. It’s amazing and now we see our friends and family more because they all want to actually visit us here!!! We’ve had some dark days when the sale
On our house fell through several times while we were in France and when we were in the depths of winter in North Yorkshire renting somewhere waiting to buy our house. Oh and although the holiday let was ready to go our home needs work and it’s been tough to get used to but it’s just incredible up here and the outdoor life is amazing!! BTW my husband just turned 60 and I’m in my 40s. There is no time to waste. Also what kind of life did we want for our daughter!? She doesn’t have time to waste either and she was only 4 when we went to France! I’m not even going to wish you luck because it’s not luck it’s bravery you need to just go for it. It’s not the end of the world if everything goes to shit. Nothing is surmountable. There is always a way you just have to find it!

    2. I am a serial re inventor. Grew up an Essex girl (which was epic fun) moved to Oxford to get married and turned into a rural village lady who volunteers, had a son, ran a preschool, moved into an ancient cottage with bats, made a cottage garden in two acres. Then we moved to Singapore and lived the city life for nine years. I adored it.

Now we are back with the bats. But going back feels wrong. Time for more adventure. I am 71. I don’t want to settle down. Keep moving and they won’t find you, as a dodgy friend says.

A word of advice though. Rural living is pretty damn awful all through the winter. There is f all to do and you live indoors for months. Having lived in a proper city I am converted. Being able to walk to a shopping mall, the MRT which links to glamour, shopping, great food, wonderful nature parks and world class attractions like Gardens by the Bay all accessible inside 30 minutes was so enriching. We still had nature and the sea on our doorstep.

I am thinking Thailand next, the minute my husband retires.

    3. Do it. I made a super scary house move during Covid, turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. If you’re thinking about it, you’ve already made the decision, the rest is just acclimatising to that decision.

    4. This is a basic principle of Stoicism. Introduce discomfort into your life. Too much comfort and pleasure creates soft people. Hard times help us build resilience and inner strength. Important for weathering the, inevitably, tough times ahead. See discomfort as an antidote to easy living.

    5. Im 46, I do something like this every now and then. Cycle about 20miles to where grew up. Let the memories wash over me. Get home and see how far I have come. I was divorced at 40. I started crossfit, and I am now in the best shape of my life. Im doing Hyrox this weekend. I do get the feeling I need to do this sort of thing while I still can.

    7. How does the saying go? "Moving 3 times equals a house burning down?" Or as an architect told me: "One builds his first home for his enemy, the second one for his friend and the third one for himself." I hope you will find what you are looking for in that house. And sure, you have materials to make youtube videos for years to come. Maybe you turn from fitness influencer/comedian to D.I.Y. comedian, bio gardener. Looking forward to it.

    8. Mark, I've got to be honest, when I saw the title I thought 'mmm I might leave this one". But as I watch all your videos and it popped up again a few days later I just clicked on it. Glad I did as it's such an honest and heartfelt quick story of your life. There is definitely a different side to you here. Great! But don't stop the humour 😁

    9. always knew from your videos that we live fairly close together but this vid really made me realise how close!! the place you worked as a life guard was the same place my school, in Wargrave, used to take us swimming, albeit many years after your life guarding career ended! Love the vid!

    10. I love your videos Mark, weird, never met you, but you feel a bit like a mate.

This one really hit. I lost my grandad last week. When I say lost, I don’t mean I left him somewhere and can’t find him, he passed away. I’m 44 years old, and it feels like the first really significant loss that I’m old enough to understand.

When the big things happen, birthday milestones, break ups, health. You do inevitably reflect on things. I wish you all the luck in the world mate if this comes off for you. You really seem like a superb fella.

    11. Lovely video at a relaxing pace and nice to see some of the places i also grew up in. @marklewisfitness what would be the chances of getting a digital still image of that drone shot lookin over cemetery junction. Many thanks.

    12. This might be my favorite video. I’m changing careers so I can learn a trade with the goal of building our next house in the middle of nowhere off grid. Where I live now is so crowded. Must have seen 12 cars on my 7 mile jog yesterday. Still too many people.

    13. I'm 74 years old. Time goes so fast, and I wish a younger me would have realized it. Now I'm too old. Do it now, Mark, because you too will be 74 before you know it.

    14. Cool video mate. Dead on. You never know what’s around the corner too.

Re bats in the belfry, bats are protected so maybe check what you need to do to move them on (I’m sure you already have but just in case!) 😊

    15. You’re becoming the British Beau Miles brotha. I believe that to be a huge compliment! Keep on telling these great stories my friend.
