Welcome to part 3 of our 1500 km Camino along the Via Podiensis — from Le Puy-en-Velay, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In this episode we explore the perfect villages of Espalion and Estaing on the Lot River and then descend to Conques for a grand pilgrim arrival.

We started the Via Podiensis (Le Puy Camino or Chemin du Puy) on August 7, 2023, spending 28 days walking in France, arriving at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on September 3rd. From there, we continued on the Camino Frances, arriving in Santiago on September 29th.

This is our first time walking the Via Podiensis and our second time on the Camino Frances. We have hiked several other Camino routes in Spain including the Camino Primitivo (May 2023), Camino de Invierno (March 2023), the Camino del Norte (July 2019), and the Camino Frances (September 2017). We packed ultralight bags for all of our journeys.

my he’s got him we’re following the red and white blazes on the Via podiensis walking through stunning and iconic villages on this historical Pilgrim Road I’m Laney and I’m Sean and this is days we [Music] spent [Music] what do you guys decide um I’m going to grab some green beans cuz they’re kind of light won’t get super smashed for dinner tonight that was a [Music] poem we are pastried up we got some free snacks we’ve had big breakfast at the Jeet the Jeet owner said goodbye to us and now we say goodbye to Claus and [Music] go don’t die you don’t get to go in anymore [Music] buddy slow and steady like a s [Music] mostly this morning has been a really nice walk in the woods but also real steep the climb out of town was just oh killing me most that’s just cuz the heat the humidity I mean these views are just amazing yeah like Cal down right there yeah come the olds right [Music] there wow [Music] we’re walking to a STA and you go up this super straight uphill for like a while it’s about 30° right now it’s pretty hot but it’s really muggy so it’s just a very sweaty day lany’s kind of struggling having a hard time cooling off had to take more breaks had to make sure she’s not overheating there’s humidity got to make sure you past yourself [Music] oh it’s hot that’s a lot of straight hot walking here we [Music] go [Music] John said look like you’re cooking this is how I [Music] cook [Music] our night in estong was great our Jeet had air conditioning and now that we’ve had our very typical French breakfast of toast and coffee and jam it is time for us to have a semi-short day to leier but it’s kind of a short day because there’s Con coming up which is a big place for pilgrims so we wanted a short day into conch we’re getting a really early start on our 21 km today because it was so hot yesterday I thought I [Music] died it’s Sean’s turn to get fun with the poles oo oh that was some tall flag nailed it [Music] so I think my biggest takeaway after the first week on the shaman D takeway number one is jeets don’t usually have soap at all even in the bathrooms like there’s not even hand soap second takeaway almost everyone does the dinner and breakfast at the Jeet Demi p the Demi pension yeah almost everyone does that it’s just easy delicious and fairly affordable compared to eating out at a restaurant unless you’re doing like a picnic then your picnic prices are definitely cheaper the last thing the weirdest one instead of drinking coffee out of a mug people drink coffee out of these giant bowls look at the these giant bowls of coffee giant bowls coffee lot of coffee giant bowls of coffee I hate long hair you’re so sweaty I don’t know why it’s so long I’m so sweaty it’s like 8:40 in the morning yeah that’s perfect h no we took a variant today right after aong you can choose to take the gr6 or the gr65 the gr65 is the official like via podiensis but most of it in this area really hugs the gr6 as well our guide book the cicone guide book recommended to take the gr6 route because it’s more Scenic The Climb is a little less Steep and there’s a little less asphalt I mean I’m walking on now right now but we’ve seen fewer hikers and we’re really enjoying the gr6 this morning you can tell that people don’t take this route because the cows are like who is that we on the alra plateau the cows don’t give a crap about you yeah so when you exit his song you can just look for those signs for the gr6 and take that instead to the left right when you go over the pretty pretty Bridge you go left straight away so normally I hate hiking in the Heat and summer but the one thing that is the best part about it is it’s Blackberry season they’re just starting to come ripe like some of them are sour today [Music] perfect we’re here in some Thunder we’re trying to stay ahead of this cloud formation qu pretty windy so we probably won’t use this video [Music] I it’s hot we’re looking for a lunch spot a picnic Place [Music] good so it’s 2:15 and we are almost at our which is Le it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere not in a town because conch is such an important place it kind of makes this section like a little choke point you either have to do one really big day or you do two smaller days when I booked our itinerary I chose to do this is two smaller days because the terrain is really really hilly and you can’t hear this cuz it’s [Music] windy puyy puy lean into the [Music] bed [Music] it just started raining really really hard that’s the sound of rain good thing we hadn’t left yet because it just looks like a passing storm and I don’t want to get wet last night was very very buggy we were eating outside which was great but it also meant tons of mosquitoes we had our bug spray on we still got bit this place is very sweet and very nice there was a really long talk where everyone shared information about themselves after dinner and because I don’t speak any french I had no idea what was going on I think Sean got something out of it cuz he got to practice his French and he was doing all [Music] right [Music] the last climb before Kong after this climb it’s just Cruis into the downhill note to self eat more nectarines no to Sean unsalted almonds are fine not good not bad [Music] [Music] fine hi buddy hey bud you want to pet him a fall I think he’s I think he’s happy oh yeah oh he loves it the little B little B just stay away from his [Music] no he’s got him got it you want me to try to Pat it good other you are a crazy we should have given him our pear the funniest thing these last couple kilometers into conch is just a really steep descent yeah we’re taking it really slowly for our knees but we’ll still be in Conch for lunchtime it’s really nice hoay [Applause] [Music] hooray so excited toy tastes like cream [Music] hi ber we’re staying in the Abby and con which is kind of like the famous place to stay here this this beautiful interesting historical building a lot of amenities for the pilgrims we’ve been on the communo for a week we’re settling in with our bodies settling into the rhythm of being in France instead of Spain yeah it’s a really different feeling the shaman versus the Camino so we’re going to be getting ready for the pilgrim blessings and all of the fun things they do at the Cathedral tonight we really can’t wait to see all that that’s like the big thing to do here in Conch that kind of puts a little period at the end of the sentence of most people’s pilgrimages as they go from lip to co yeah so phase one done I’m so tired I don’t know why we barely watch walk [Music] [Music] today [Music] RAC any

    1. So love your vids!!! Ive two weeks next year to walk. This first section of le puy looks amazing. I have not done the camino Frances before, just a section of the Portuguese. I was thinking either the primitivo or part of the via francigena in Tuscany. What would you suggest? I have average fitness for a 52 year old!
