This is a chapter for an open course on Modern American History, talking about the economic and political events leading up to the Second World War, and, along the way, we’re going to talk about impossible workers’ utopias, a man named “Joe Steel,” fighting in the streets, the most beautiful, depressing musical ever written, and a single, lonely voice of reason and dissent.
