On April 8, 2024, the Moon’s shadow will fall on Earth, creating a total solar eclipse across North America. If you have the chance to see it, you don’t want to miss it. It’s an amazing coincidence that total eclipses happen at all — and that we’re alive at a time when we can see and predict them. We made this video so you can learn how to watch an eclipse safely, what to look for during an eclipse, why eclipses happen, and how eclipses have helped advance scientific research.

    1. 14:28 huh? The moon is leaving us and you just rush pass that tiny little detail. Where is it going and what will replace it? We kinda need the moon. No?

    2. The Antikythera Mechanism, an analog gear computer from the Greeks 2000 years ago supposedly was able to predict lunar and solar eclipses as well as other astronomical events. It's not a scam or Ancient Aliens crap either i promise! Anyway, great video!

    3. I"m from Toronto ON so I couldn't miss the opportunity to see this eclipse in my own backyard, Niagara Falls. We drove there and unfortunately it was cloudy all day and we only saw the eclipse through our glasses for only few seconds. However when totality came it was like twilight darkness.. and I was completely amazed and in AWE! 🫢😃 Afterward the clouds clear and we saw the eclipse again for little while..The next total eclipse in this area is in 2150 or something?! It was well worth the trip!!!

    4. As a science-y guy I was way out of the loop on this. I knew maybe a month before. The eclipse was over my area totality about 1 1/2 drive but I had sold my car a few years ago. I probably could have made more effort and really I should have. Here in PEI Canada I was in the 99.54% coverage zone which I though was OK but looking at pictures of people here the 100% was far better. It was pretty wild it got dark here and I made a pinhole camera and say the eclipse. It was a spooky type of light nothing like twilight I think because of the 360 degree light effect.

    5. I watched this video a few days before the April 8 eclipse, and am rewatching it now, and I was truthfully brought to tears watching the footage. I'm feeling very thankful to have witnessed such a marvelous event, and to have understood what was happening before my eyes. Thank you, Joe, for making groundbreaking information accessible!

    6. Had a chance to see the eclipse over in Mena Arkansas. It was such a great event with family and friends there to see it. I counted 5 generations and folks from 7 states at the event. A really nice lady opened up her home n yard for the event n I thought that was just an amazing thing to do 🙂

But yeh, we had clear skies and saw the 2 diamond rings, quite the show. Food drink telescopes cameras and glasses for all to use and enjoy.

Hope others had a great time from their corner of the U.S, Mexico, n Canada. Let’s do it again in 20 or so years hahaha.

Thanks Joe for keeping us inspired and staying curious!
