Have we finally found the first carbon fibre monocoque UCI-banned superbike which can topple the time of a modern road bike? The Hotta has Tour de France Prologue Victories and Olympic Medals to its name and we’ve got not just one, but two of these very special machines to pit against a brand-new Canyon Aeroad. But there’s a twist, one of the Hotta’s is kitted out in full retro-guise, but the other, is a modern take, assembled with cutting-edge components to blend the two worlds into one. Could this create the ultimate mix of modern efficiency with old-school aerodynamic madness? There’s only one way to find out!

The UCI should allow all designs without any restriction. Including Star Wars Crash Helmets and carbon Art-Deco Y-Bike Frames. It is not about the rider. It is about the technology Your Opinion?
I have 2 of these and a lotus 110, i love my hotta thats set up for track! Still great to ride nowadays
Riding a red devon more or less…
No hard edges on the Canyon? How about the balooning tyres near the rims?
Beautiful modern upgrade, e stay frames have a special look for me.
bp stealth
bt super bike
zipp 2001 / 3001
trimble tt
and….c4 frames
Imagine riding that bike in the rain
15:08 I don't know if you'd make this video or if you've already done it but can you make a video where you get a very fast and sporty bike and a cheap bike and swap the parts between both of them so you'll be using the parts of the good bike on the cheap frame and the other way around for the other bike ?
I think that would be a fun experiment
Would love to see a new version with modern production possibilities and parts. Or a new Trek Y Foil
More please- get Obree on the channel
My brompton is year 1994. I don't think it was antique
I love these comparison videos, keep them coming. Ventum's new One (?) has the same shape as the Hotta, you guys reckon you can get your ones on one of those? Maybe the GTN folks have already tested it and I'm missing that. Bring it to GCN!!!
(you chum (retro/relics or not) make a lovely presenting duo as well)
Old frame with modern components and fit ideology 👍. Love it! More, please!
my spinergy wheels had braces between the carbon spokes to provide stiffness that seem to be missing on these, not surprised they were flexing like crazy
The flex on that front wheel! 😮🤦🏼♂️
Love seeing these old carbon bikes from my youth. The best bike I have ever owned was in my mid 20's. Polished clear coated Vitus 979 aluminum. It had a Shimano 105 group set with a beautiful perforated leather, titanium rail Selle Italia Flite seat. Loved that bike. Nothing I have had since compares. Would love to build one with a modern groupset and wider tires.
Oh and a waxed chain 😊
Somebody once turned up at a 50 on one of those Lotus monocoque frames. Mahogany legs, all the gear.
I passed him at about mile 30 and then put another two minutes into him.
All the gear…
Sorry but who was the random at 9 mins??🤷🏻
It doesn’t matter the bike, Ollie will get dropped.
The Hotta could be seen under triathletes (those that could afford one) for many years as well.
So, wider tires and narrower bars give 30 years of improvements.
I never get tired of Si's Bovine Phobia
Easily the modernized Hotta. You have to realize just how awful super-narrow tires were/are. 18's were standard tube clinchers for a while, and I was in traction heaven when 23s came along. Wide tires have revolutionized the ride as well as the speed.
This looks like a retro-futuristic bike from the 60’s. I must confess it’s quite ugly objectively, but you have to appreciate it nevertheless.
Still have my 1998 Hotta and Spinergy wheels.
I hope u guys can get the time trial bike that huffy made. The one with the front wheel on rollers.
It's slightly unfair on the old bikes you're not practising on/getting a feel for them first.
I have not ridden a modern Superbike, I would never spend 8 to $10k for a bicycle. But regardless, it seems to me that modern road superbike frames are incredibly similar to TT frames I was riding 10-12 years ago.
The Hotta frame looks tiny! Not sure if different sizes were actually produced or whether it was a kind of one size fits all but it just looks so small!
Looks a lot like Corima Fox.
Yes, my 2019 Cannondale Systemsix Hi-mod is faster than my 2008 Giant TT bike. Amazing how far we have come in 10 years.
Please please stop the beeps…. Was funny when Matt did it, now it’s cringe 😬
Wouldn’t trust that Spinnergy wheel.
