Flensburg is located only 5 kilometers from the border with Denmark, representatives of the Danish minority of Germany live and work here side by side with Germans. The Danish language is often heard here, the Danish “Flensborg Avis” is requested as often as German newspapers in the newsstands, and the central cafe “Holm” serves Danish coffee with “Copenhagen cookies”.

In the 16th century, Flensburg was part of the Danish kingdom, and it was at this time that the city flourished. Thanks to its favorable geographical location – Flensburg is located in a 35-kilometer fjord – the city became one of the most important trading ports of that time.

During the period of Danish domination and the heyday of trade, when ships returning from distant lands brought valuable overseas goods to the port, in Flensburg they began to build merchant yards that later became characteristic of the city. Many years later, merchant yards were restored one by one, and their purpose changed: now they house artists’ workshops, beer, flower or wine shops.
