58 Grafton Way residence of Francisco de Miranda (1750-1816).
It was in this very house in London that Miranda designed the Venezuelan flag.
In 1810, Miranda welcomed: Simón Bolívar, Andrés Bello and Luis López Méndez, the three Venezuelan commissioners that integrated the first Latin American diplomatic mission ever to be officially received by a European authority. After Miranda’s death, the house was still inhabited by his wife, Sara Andrews, and her two sons.
This house served as headquarters and recruiting centre, from which English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh legionaries enlisted to fight for the freedom of Latin America.

The British contingent at the Battle of Carabobo Venezuela was about the 6000 British soldiers who took part in the battle on June 24, 1821 a victory won by South American patriots over Spanish royalists.The Government of Venezuela acquired the house and adjacent properties in 1978,
in order to convert the complex into an active cultural centre at the service of the highest interest of Venezuela and Latin America.

Andrés Bello (1781 –1865) was a Venezuelan humanist, diplomat, poet, legislator, philosopher, educator and philologist, whose political and literary works constitute an important part of Spanish American culture.

Along with Bello, Bolivar and López also became friends with Miranda and used their opportunity to become known thanks to Miranda’s accomplishments.

He was a Venezuelan patriot, general and traveler considered the “Precursor” to Simon Bolivar’s “Liberator.”

He led a remarkable life which saw him fight in thhe French Revolution (for which his name appears on the Arc de Triomphe).
