In the city of Bristol, can be found an encampment of around 800 homeless, destitute and displaced individuals dubbed ‘Caravan City’ by the national tabloids and mainstream media. Was this caused by the massive ongoing UK Housing Crisis and Cost of Living Crisis? I spent 24 hours in Caravan City to find out what it’s like to live in one of the UK’s biggest homeless camps. Unfortunately many of these people have little to no choice about their situation, finding themselves in a desperate and depressive situation where living in Caravan City or the streets is the only choice. Living amongst piles of rubbish and abandoned caravans at every turn, what I found in Bristol City Centre was shocking, I could not believe the numbers of deprived and poverty stricken homeless to be found across Bristol! Amongst the Homeless and poverty stricken people were a small group of Full Time ‘Van Lifers’, people who live in camper vans or motorhomes travelling around the UK living a nomadic lifestyle. There are clearly people living in poverty amongst the encampment, but also free people choosing to live this way… What I found in Caravan City shocked and saddened me.

    1. The council needs to pull there socks up , I live on n a rat infested estate in central London unfortunately, they've dug up every tiny plot around the estate to build more "affordable homes" yet there are properties that have been empty for years ,we also have a big fly tipping issue because the council partnered up with a well known recycling company and they now charge for taking bulk refuse. We have communal heating and hot water that is supplied by a recycling centre that's incinerating our recycling and feeding the heat back to us , in effect we're paying twice to three times, the products we put in our recycling we've paid for them we pay them to collect it and then we pay again to get them to pump it back to us in the form of heat and hot water. These charges Go up near on every year without fail . Our service charges are now half the amount of what our rent is .

    2. It's sad we have so many homeless my daughter live with me with her 2 children we are in small apartment. She can not afford a rental, my heart does go out to all homeless. But keep your area clean. I am glad they have a place to lay their heads. It's just upsetting that uk do nothing. We are headed back to victorian times

    3. I never thought I'd see the day where UK streets became like a scene from America. Its so sad to see and I have empathy for both sides. I've worked all my life, now in my fifties and I'm treading water monthly like so many others when the wages hit my bank. Its a struggle to pay my rent which is nothing compared to recent rent rises so I can only imagine how tough it is for people paying today's prices. I only hope that they find a solution to the caravans and vans that is beneficial to their owners before this mirrors the huge issue in the USA but sadly I doubt it. Thank you for taking the time to stay there overnight and give a full picture rather than brief interviews swayed to one party or another I've seen. I'm a van lifer through choice, there's a huge difference between choosing or being forced into the lifestyle 😢

    4. Its Bad and sad, however many of these people support 'Refuges welcome', and other open boarder NGO'S
So its a bit like turkeys voting for Xmas, this is what happens

    5. Ngl watching these videos are genuinely terrifying, way more than any horror film. What’s it gonna be like in 10 years? The scene with the homeless people in tents surrounded by a sea of trash and graffiti and hyperdermic needles and things. I’d rather starve myself to death. F. That. I was thinking it wouldn’t get like this in until about 50 years, but it seems to be accelerating.

    6. Enjoyed your video, you have a lovely manner, very polite, inquisitive with people and understanding, some great skills there. But, false grass in a van.. thats a new one…. Thank you. You've earned a subscriber.

    7. So should I start a Go Fund Me? How much ? £10K,£20K ? Would I get support? Food parcels,
      counselling,
warmth materials? Would I gather volunteers? If this is possible then this could be the first of many.
      Leaving out councils,
politicians etc people community can create help.Think this we as people can do.Thoughts?

    8. Those caravans mean a million pounds to their owners. If you think that having cash in the bank gives you the right to not have to look at people who don't have cash in the bank then your thinking is damaged beyond repair.

If you are such a valuable person then why did you walk on past that litter? If you are so "higher than thou" you would contribute to society and pick it up.

    9. Some of them are poor and cant afford greedy rents, some have jobs and cant afford greedy rents, some are dodging expenses or saving their money, some have homes and charge greedy rents,, some are not poor and have very expensive caravans and converted trucks, some actually just like to travel while others dont move until forced, some spend all their money on drugs, some like the lifestyle and social scene and crusty fashions..all sorts of reasons for living on the side of the roads in groups..travellers and gypsies used to do it whilst moving and now a rapidly growing number of non travellers do it.for some its a choice.. for others a necessity. Sadly, more and more will come and make it unmanagable rather than keeping in seperate managable groups like real travellers perhaps due to lack of experience and consideration to locals and other van dwellers. There is no need for some to have so little respect to leave rubbish everywhere or potentially shit everywhere on the downs or walk around on horse tranquilizer intimidating locals or banging out techno. A bit of respect goes a long way… But rather than take responsibility for themselves like adults and minimising negative impact i expect some will slowly ruin it for everyone including themselves mainly due to selfishness and the safety/ hygiene risks they create. Perhaps if they could manage their community it could be a viable solution to landlord greed and housing crisis. Underfunded councils sold their land so unlikely to be providing sites for a rapidly expanding number of vandwellers.

    10. Dear Joe, what another great video and revelation of how the other half lives in these traumatic and economic times. What was not mentioned is the sanition with these people and campers also water suppy. Any waste in black bags would be a high sanitory risk and great encouragement for rats and vermin. There appeared not to be even a portaloo for their convenience. With summer en route there may be worse health hazzards yet to come. You do a great job with your research. Beneath that long hair and beard there is a very handsome guy liked by all. I am a Dorset man living in Luton and worth a visit from you as it is low in the ranks of popularity. Every Monday evening in the centre is a mobile soup kitchen and you can queue for some tasty soup snd fresh bread. However, if you let me know in advance of your arrival to this drab loathsome and inhospitable town with miserable folk who appear to have downs syndrome most of the time I would prefer to take you to the Wetherspoons locally for a pint, excellent meal and conversation. By the way did you rent your bike or do you own it ?? Also keep it safe and secure from undesirables.
Warm regards also you make so many people happy and I always look forward to your new videos. Peter Luton UK
