The Royal Jewels – EP2 – Although many of the monarchies of Europe and Russia no longer exist–or exist in a much more ceremonial capacity–their astonishing jewelry still remains and is still worn by the remaining royal families.

    The Royal Jewels (2013)
    Director: Anna von Lowzow
    Stars: David Bateson
    Genre: Documentary
    Language: English

    Synopsis:
This is the story of an historic ruby parure worn by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. It was made for Napoleon’s magnificent coronation in 1804 when an incredible amount is spent on attire as all eyes focus on France.

When most monarchies only use their symbols of royal power when lying in state, it is also the story of the most visible sign of royal dignity, legitimacy, when these impressive gems are worn at banquets and State visits. But few know that some of the world’s most fascinating jewels are often linked to high points in royal history.

Napoleon’s first fiancée Désirée, the Marseille silk trader’s daughter, attends the coronation wearing beautiful rubies and diamonds. Later she brings the parure with her when she becomes Queen of Sweden.

The Swedish royal family inherits magnificent jewels from the French family. Many remain in Sweden but some come to Denmark in 1869 when Désirée’s great-granddaughter Princess Lovisa marries the heir to the Danish throne. Crown Prince Frederik later inherits the rubies and his wife Crown Princess Mary wears the historic parure for the first time at her wedding in 2004.

Members of the Danish and Swedish Royal families tell the fascinating story of the Royal jewels and the human destinies behind the gems. The history of the Royal Jewels, the Royal Houses and the art history of the gems has been never told before.

A fascinating world few know – but many would like to know more about.

    1. I feel a strange irony watching these magnificent creations shown off in various palaces/museums. Much was looted from colonized or attacked/conquered countries. Or bought with wealth stolen or earned from these colonies. Displayed and flaunted with great pride, shameless, in my opinion! The truth of all royal treasures is that it is either robbed or acquired with revenue sucked out from their own people through unjust or brutal means. Unlike we who toil, save money, and then buy such things. I'm sorry for raining on anyone's parade by thinking out loud! I too adore these beauties;, my compliments and praise go to the artisans creating such beauty. As a jewelry designer, I'm euphoric to study these designs. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever" though its history may be mired in blood and gore. Sad….😭

    2. And here i am, debating whether i could afford to spend $19 for a complete outfit at Walmart. I had been feeling guilty that i shouldn't have bought it.

    3. I'm glad you have opened the Tiara Collection and the stories of them .The Opal Tiara of Queen Elizabeth 11 has been shown by herself .Sherlock Holmes the speckle band in the story it mentions the Opal Tiara.

    4. I really enjoyed this video, I absolutely love jewels and jewellery and to see so much if it lost I have always love the tiara the late queen wore it makes it so much more precious knowing it’s history.
I hated that they took out the stones from the items especially since they disregarded the smaller stones which I think to use would be anything over 3 carats up to 10 so you can only imagine the size of those they kept.
I can totally understand why the people rose up, to walk around totally disregarding the suffering of the Russians suffering was so hard to watch and how they couldn’t see this goes to show the disregard they had for the human life of their lower class, ‘nothing was said of the “peasants”

    5. Such a Historical tragedy……..all gone into private collections rather than being admired as the Historical treasures they are ! Russia has destroyed its own heritage & has lost more than it can Politically replace!.

    6. If I could print money, I'd be a "fabulous spender" too.
After robbing graves of ancient relics.. claiming Tiffany's existed in 18th century is hilarious.
Your modern experts cannot recreate Buckingham Palace, or the jewels that exist in your video.
Keep deluding yourself that great great grand mama was special and magic happened back then, not glorified grave robbers on the write side of history. Good Luck

    7. While these jewels are incredibly beautiful and rare, it seems a waste. Maybe I'm too practical. I can see why the peasants revolted., they were starving and freezing and the royalty was living in excessive luxury.

    8. I had the pleasure of seeing the collection at the brooklyn museum in the early 90s. Why it was there, i dont understand why this exhibit didnt wind up at the met. We went on a tuesday morning and the place was close to empty so we had the run of the place not being pressured to "move on" because of large crowds. It was just fantastic to witness. There were estimated prices next to each piece but the stand out was a very long triple pearl necklace that took 22 years to complete. It was listed as "priceless". And there werent just jewels, there were his uniforms, and suits. Dresses and gowns 😮worn by the czarina and the grand ducheses. Solid gold priests vestments. Bibles covered in gold and precious gems. There were personal letters and stationary accessories by faberge. There were 5 faberge eggs. Loose stones the size of walnuts were just kind of thrown on a game board used as "betting chips" for what ever game was being played. The luxury and extravagance they lived is unsurpassed.

    9. Unfortunately, you're wrong the Queen's grandmother Queen Mary of Teck had a copy made of what was called the lover's knot tiara, it has never been on the head of a Russian member of the royal family her admiration for the tiara led to Queen Mary doing a copy she did buy many jewels from it is unknown what happened to original. Some people believe the main jewels themselves are fakes and are no longer in Russia, the queen gave the copy to Princess Diana as a wedding gift and gave it back after the divorce

    10. Absolutely stunning! I could only imagine how hard it was for each of them in such a level of position. ❤ Best wishes and blessings. Nielson/CV

    11. So decadent! The jewels were stunning though. I feel any jewels, trinkets etc that were recovered should have gone to the heirs. Those items did belong to their family.
