In today’s Hungary travel vlog, we discuss 5 Things You Should NEVER Do in Hungary and Don’t Do This in Budapest.
There are a few other posts about Hungary: 25 Things to do in Budapest, Hungary Travel Guide, DO’S AND DONβT IN HUNGARY, Visit Budapest – Five Things You Will Love & Hate about Budapest, Hungary, and 3 Crazy Things About BUDAPEST. But none really touch on the things you should never do in Hungary. So I decided to make this travel vlog!
This isn’t a complete list of what not to do in Hungary , just some things I observed from my recent trip to Budapest, Hungary. If you are Hungarian, a Hungarian expat, or living in Hungary and you have any other suggestions of things related to the topic of don’t do this in Hungary , make sure you comment below. Make sure you also try Palinka! Palinka is a fruit brandy! If offered Palinka it is rude to turn it down.
Hungary tourism is a big driver of the Hungarian economy, so they do overlook somethings that tourist do, but try to respect the cultural differences when you travel Hungary.
Hopefully you can use this to supplement your Hungary travel guide advice and not be viewed as a rude tourist.
I love Hungary – don’t let the rules or culture differences keep you from visiting. Just be mindful of those cultural differences and enjoy this awesome country.
5 Things You Should Never Do In Hungary
Let me start off by saying, if I had to recommend just one city in Europe to visit it would probably be Budapest. Itβs got everything, old world charm but in a modern city, the architecture is amazing and exactly what you think of when you think European city, itβs very safe, the food is amazing and itβs soooo affordable compared to comparable cities.
1 – Never clink glasses or bottles together. There was a revolution in Hungary in 1848 that was defeated. Legend has it that Austrians celebrated in Vienna by toasting and clinking their glasses. Hungarians vowed not to cheers with glasses for 150 years. While that time frame ended in 1998 – many Hungarians still do not cheers! It was actually against the law until the mid 1990s!
2 – Never make the Hungry Hungary joke to a Hungarian. Itβs one of those things that non Hungarians say to Hungarians and wellβ¦.itβs just not funny. Donβt do that!!!!
3 – Never forget to tip. After spending 8 months in countries where tipping isnβt customary and sometimes considered offensive, I often forget to tip! In Budapest and Hungary in general tipping is customary. The acceptable tipping rate is around 15%. Side note: Donβt say thank you until youβve paid your tab. Saying thank you when you pay your tab lets the server know youβre done and you donβt expect any change. So make sure you donβt do that if you want change back.
4 – Never refuse Palinka. Palinka is a fruit brandy that is a favorite with Hungarians. Hungarians like to say Palinka in small amounts is medicine, in large amounts a remedy! You donβt drink Palinka alone – itβs a drink Hungarians have with friends. Itβs is a big no-no to turn down Palinka if itβs offered to you.
5 – Never say Buda-PEST. Thatβs the quickest way to get on a Hungarianβs bad side. Itβs Buddah – PESHT. Side note: DONT CALL IT Bucharest! Thatβs in Romania! I made that mistakeβ¦didnβt turn out well for me! In my defense I had one to many Palinka!!!!
Also, never miss a chance to hang out at one of the Budapest ruin bars.

About the tips… check if the bill already includes the service fee. In that case, most people don't tip.
Excellent content and very true π
Finally somebody who explains the proper way to pronounce the capital! If you want the S sound then you need to have SZ together. But since it's a singular S then is makes the SH sound.
Thank you for the thank you tip . Also in my language we pronounce it exactly like you said so I just say it like I always.
Is Bukarest capital of Hungary ? Today i meet some stupid hungarian teenagers on ship in Greece to Skatios.. they were big jerks.. i know now how could i troll them heheo
Not too bad I remembered these and yes some locals did offer me Palinka π Hungary is a very nice country.
4:03 like Michael Jackson did on his tour to Romania :)) its also applied to Bucharest and romanians too
Not even as a pregnant woman are you allowed to turn down a shot of polinka!
I think these tips are not as useful, as:
DONT ROAR ON THE STREETS
GIVE PLACE ON THE SIDEWALK
STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ESCALATOR
DO NOT DAMAGE ANYTHING IN THE CITY
HAVE A NICE DAY ππ
I never cline beer glasses in the US, no reason just don't. MagyarorszΓ‘g is Hungary not Atilla the Hun. Basically is an insult. Polinka yummy and Budapest like you said. My Mom was born in Pest. I can add a few more to that. Hug Mugyars kiss them on the cheek. Ervin Cserni
NEVER REFUSE PΓLINKA!
wow i am Hungarian but i live in Los Angeles 25 years now i loved your video and i can say that you are right about everything you said
As a solo female traveler, if someone offers me a drink then Iβm going to turn it downβ¦ not to be rude but to be safe.
Dude, Latin America always tip what you talking about?
dude your saying it wrong it's Pronounced PΓ‘linka ( Palinka ) is a traditional fruit spirit (or fruit brandy) with origins in the Carpathian Mountains I wasn't born there but my mom and Dad are from there and growing up in Southern Cali and speaking Hungarian in the house hold was cool and when I was old enough to travel there I lived there many times
im hungarian but i wont tip if its realy expensive
I live in Budapest and when we are celebrating whe clinc our beers
6. if you forget all those 5 Things , cancel your trip to Hungary π π
nah joke sorry , i like yer video ,i am traveling to Budapest for 120 years Harley Davidson on June 2023, thanks for the tips.
Dude dont clink beer together thing I have never ever heard… and I have lived here for 21 years.
About the clinking beer glasses – we don't care actually and the whole myth was debunked some time ago. We do clink them everytime we drink with my friends, so no worries. Historians said the Austrian generals probably clinked champaigne glasses anyway. Some of my friends in the military tend to smash the bottom of the beer jug onto the table after clinking, which is kind of related to this custom, but nobody will call you out for this. Have fun here and thanks for making this video!
Im hungarian and its not a problem if you clinck a bottle
…and do not forget to validate your public transport ticket before boarding. Public Transport officers are bullies in uniform.
For my family if you clicking beer means nothing.
Oh thank you for sharing and tips about buda pesh π hopefully to visit Hungary soon hopefully this year βοΈπ€π€
Awesome tips and very well done video, thanks a lot!
exclude hungary from NATO also the EU the notorious traitors are not to be given more chances. history speaks for itself hungary notoriously betrayed it's historical allies, what always resulted in mass loss of human lives of those who trusted hungarians, the latest and very prominent betrayal was when hungary joined nazis during the second world war not only joined but increased trade and fought alongside nazis until 1943 when they betrayed nazis again and made a peace deal with the US and the UK. sneaky traitors DO NOT TRUST hungarians NEVER!
You are traitors to Europe, you support criminal Russia against Ukraine, you should be expelled from the European Union!!!!!
GIDEON GREIF INSTITUT FOR HOLOCAUST Jasenovac First death camp FOR kids VATICAN Magnum Crimen
You got scammed I live in hungary I never tipped in my life there is not EU country where you have to tip
Im a Hungarian and YOU CAN CLINK BEERS TOGETHER
Complete bullshit, you dont know what you are talking about
We Hungarians really like it when a foreigner knows at least a few sentences in Hungarian.
As a hungarian, i can prove that everything that you said( except for the beer clink) is right. And in my opinion, budapest is beautiful, but it is way too expensive compared to other places. Yes, I definetly recommend to visit, but not every single time ( if you go multiple times to hungary). There are much cleaner, and better places in hungary that you can visit with your siblings. anyways thank you for this well-made video! Greetings!
1. And the 3. Is fake. And if u dont want to drink then u dont need to drink pΓ‘linka but peoples gona think that u are p*sy
My dad loved doing Hungary/Hungry AND he's a Hungarian immigrant. Albeit it's funnier in America than over there, I assume. Lmao
And he clinked beers because he never cared about some war that happened 100 years before he was born. He was laid back and didn't get offended much by that culture stuff.
He was a 44 years sober and HAD TO refuse Palinka. π
Also my mom said to mention Palinka is pronounced "Pie-Ink-a"
1., Clinking beer is not a problem. Most of us does it. 2., Tip is true. If you do not give tip it means you hated te food or the service. 3., We do not care how you pronounce Budapest π We know that our language is difficult for most of foraigners. 4., Calling BudapestBukarest doesn't make us angry but we will think that you are stupid π
lm Hungarian and l hated it when people would say something stupid like Gee you must be hungry if l got a dollar for every time l heard that ld be rich and yes, we get mad very quickly when we are insulted
Never refuse palinka π π
Hmmmm I just saw a Budapest video from a local here on Youtube that refutes clinking glasses and refusing that drink. I know it's hard to come up with YouTube content tho.
