Tuesday 2nd April 2024:

Taking the train from Hereford, I changed at Droitwich Spa for the short journey on to nearby Kidderminster Station. Next to this modern looking building is the older station of the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) – where you can ride a steam train up to Bridgnorth. I’ll definitely come back here one day to do a video of the SVR!

About a mile’s walk from the station, I reached the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, which stretches 46 miles from Stourport on Severn to Great Haywood Junction where it joins the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Today, I walked the 3 miles down to Stourport, to see where the canal starts from the Severn, at a set of both wide and narrow locks. It’s a very pretty canal and surprisingly wide for most of the 3 miles that I walked. A couple of locks and numerous old bridges – so there was plenty to see along the way.

The towpath was variable – nice hard path sometimes, but the almost inevitable (this time of year at least), muddy sections too. I’ll return to the canal soon, to explore it going North from Kidderminster. Definitely a canal I’d love to cruise down with Gladys – when she’s finally completed!

    Hope you enjoy the video,

    Jeff
