Born in 1894 as the oldest son of George, Duke of York, Edward became heir to the throne when his father was crowned King George V in May 1910 and was formally invested as Prince of Wales the following summer.

As feared by royal aides, Edward showed little interest in any sort of day-to-day governorship. He was mainly preoccupied with marrying Wallis Simpson, and from her husband, at least, there was no pushback, as the businessman agreed to let the King have his way.

After ruling for less than one year, Edward VIII became the first British monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne.

He made this choice after the British government and the Church of England condemned his decision to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

On the evening of December 11th, 1936, Edward gave a radio address to the public, in which he explained his reasoning for leaving behind the throne. The broadcast was expected but still shocking.

    1. I guess a channel called Royalty TV has to give the fairytale version rather than the historical one. It's a little sensationalized in a different direction, but see The Traitor King documentary for a little context — particularly on how Edward managed to burn bridges so much he was never trusted with official duties after the war.

    2. Here in 2024, it may seem strange that he couldn’t mary Wallis because of her two divorces. Considering that King Charles and Queen Camilla have both been divorced. I read a book about her and her first husband was abusive, don’t know what was the reason for the second, probably got in over her head. Edward (David) was the best looking in the physical sense, but George (Berti) was better suited to be the King of England, not only in personality but in duty. George and Elizabeth gave England wonderful Queen and now a King. If Edward had remained on the throne and married Wallis, the House of Windsor would have ended as Wallis couldn’t have children. That is unless it would have gone to Elizabeth II.
Their story seems like a precursor to the debacle of Harry and Meagan. So very glad William stands between Harry and the throne. Edward and Wallis is a sad love story.

    3. Why was King Charles able to marry a divorce and become king and Edward was not able to marry a divorced woman?Did they change the rules to fit Charles if so why didn’t they do that for Edward. Sound like Edwards personality and behavior is similar to Harry.

    4. 1986 was 50 years, and Mrs Simpson died that year, and there was the big auction of her jewels. I was a boy, but I recall that coverage on the BBC crystal clear. Sadly, Harry seems hell bent on repeating this fiasco. Thank you so much for posting this in 2024. God save the King.

    5. I still think he pushed to marry Wallace because that was his way out of being King … he never wanted to be King just free to do as he wished. In the end it was best he abdicated to his brother.

    6. I don't think she was truly happy the whole time. On a documentary that his great nephew Edward made it was said there would be times when he would wait at the bottom of the stairs, and she never come down and he cry. How happy is that

    7. I don't see why queen Elizabeth II let charles marry Camilla. Princess Margaret wasnt able to marry pete Townsend. And let harry marry Megan.

    8. Edward was thoroughly unsuited to be King. After his Succession he thought he could carry on his previous life of drinking and partying. He was a security risk, leaving state papers on his desk and his staff were right to be concerned about passing secret state papers on to him. His brother wasn’t born to be King but King George VI proved to be far more suited to the role than Edward. Edward was given an official role attached to the military during WW2 and during the evacuation from France he deserted his post and fled to Spain with Wallis. He had continued to have Nazi associations and was a huge security risk. Even when they were sent to the Bahamas where Edward became Governor General he was caught up in various scandals and including some very questionable financial dealings. It was hardly surprising that after the war he wasn’t trusted with any official role.
They were not married by a “Royal Chaplain” but rather an ordinary Church of England Vicar who defied the church to perform the ceremony in France.

    9. Elizabeth l Elizabeth ll Wallis Simpson and others betrayal are working behind the closed as they take charge of the male royal members of the family it's not nice at all same thing happened to King Charles on his marriage choice same as William on wrong choice of marriage

    10. I don't consider it a voluntary abdication. The government and church weren't going to rest until he was off the throne. I feel bad for his brother Albert who took the crown and his neice Elizabeth 2nd who's lives were totally changed. Willis was probably the most victimized woman of the 20th century who had no control over her situation her life was totally chosen for her by men. She should be given her HTH titls even though she's dead.

    11. I am glad that David stepped down from the with more than a man than he would ever be. He was a weak nazi loving.
Horrible. It Queen Elizabeth did an amazing job.Her father would be so proud

    12. When he married that Simpson woman, all spontaneity and self-will disappeared from Edward's life. He became Mrs Simpson's lap dog. Harry has exactly the same fate with Mrs Markle.

    13. Divorce, scandal, affairs, he said she said, secrets & lies, stiff upper lips… nothings changed, then what's up? Nothing new, same family, different era, same old…. yawn 🥱

    14. The UK and the British people dodged a bullet when that loser abdicated!
I understand WHY George VI and Elizabeth II would not allow his pro-Hitler self and his Nazi-loving wife to return to the UK to live!

    15. His relationship with his father was more complex than this sketch suggests. When George died V, Edward was one of the family members gathered around his bedside. He collapsed completely in tears, and fell into the arms of his mother Queen Mary. She seemed shocked and uncomfortable with his behavior, which was quite unexpected. After his father;s death, he freqently complained to his friends that his father's death was still a terible blow to him, because George was the only person he could rely on to give him truly honest advice.
