Back in the late 1980's there used to be a peace camp on a crossroads at a corner of the edge of the base.

(Yes im being serious!!). While that base is protected by MOD police, the majority of the staff are American andwork for the NSA. The main reason the security were a bit aloof is because theres nothing sensitive on the surface, everything is deep underground and if you think it seems a big site outside its absolutely MASSIVE inside, also the reason why the housing estate looks abandoned is because it IS, much of the place has been demolished, housing, school, shopping all being flattened and 100's of staff sent back home to the States as the site is being operated remotely so no need to have so many people on site anymore
