    Helmut Kämpfe was German Waffen-SS Major (Sturmbannführer).
    He joined the German army (Heer) in 1934.
    In 1939 he joined the SS and was transferred to the Waffen-SS. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched an invasion of the Soviet Union (Eastern Front), codenamed Operation Barbarossa. Kämpfe was sent on the Eastern Front in Russia. Kämpfe was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and the Close Combat Clasp in gold for his bravery. Dozens of German soldiers were killed by the French resistance Maquis. Kämpfe was ordered to begin operations against the French resistance Maquis. On June 9, 1944, Kämpfe was captured and was executed. A close friend of Kämpfe, Adolf Diekmann, the commander of the 1st Battalion, Diekmann’s battalion sealed off Oradour-sur-Glane French village and massacre whole village. In total 642 men, women and children were killed in Oradour-sur-Glane by Waffen-SS Adolf Diekmann company. Helmut Kämpfe was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

    1. Especially when France had signed an armistice with Germany in 1940, acts of resistance should have been limited to spying/gathering information for Allied command. Killing German soldiers in occupied France inevitably attracted acts of retaliation from the Germans. Oradour was one of these.
