The Hidden Gem of the undiscovered heart of Germany: Wernigerode. Wernigerode is a town in the “Harz” mountain district of Saxony Anhalt in Germany. It is also called the “Colourful Town of the Harz Mountains”. Get a glimpse into medieval times with a Castle on a hill.

A stunning city hall, unique architecture and all the charms of a small mountain town. The Harz mountains is an area steeped in lore about witches. There are hundreds of legends and stories telling of the devilish powers of the witches in the Harz mountains.

The Harz Witches’ Trail is a varied 94 kilometre route through Harz National Park. Images of witches are throughout the region, as mascot almost. Wernigerode is first mentioned in documents dating from 1121. It has a rich past as a member of the Hanseatic League.

Nicknamed “The Colourful Town of the Harz Mountains,” Wernigerode is famous for its vibrantly painted half-timbered houses lining the streets. Each house seems to tell a story through its unique colors and architectural details. Wernigerode holds the distinction of having the “Kleinstes Haus” (Smallest House), built in 1792.

This tiny wonder, squeezed between two regular houses, is only 13.8 feet tall and was once home to 11 people! Today, it houses a folklore museum. It is located on the famous Kochstrasse. Westerntorturm As the name suggests, this tower is in the western part of the historic old town.

This is only150 meters from the central market square. It is the only surviving tower: there used to be three towers. This one served as a punishment tower in medieval times. Citizens who did not pay their debts on time, were punished here. Breite

This is the main shopping street in Wernigerode. The Café Wien is in one of the older half-timbered houses here. It was built in 1583. St. Sylvestri Church The St. Sylvestri Church stands on the oldest part of Wernigerode. The name of the oldest part is the “Klint”.

The church’s community center is next to the church in the “Haus Gadenstedt”. It is located at Oberpfarrkirchhof 13 on one of the oldest settlements in the city.  The nobles and the knights used this for meetings in the middle ages. The Crooked House. Adding to its quirky charm, Wernigerode has the “Schiefes Haus” (Crooked House).

Built in the 17th century, the house has gradually tilted due to unstable ground. This gave it a characterful, leaning appearance. Wernigerode is a small town of about 33,000 citizens. A famous neighbour is Quedlinburg: sometimes called the birthplace of Germany.

A stroll through the idyllic and narrow alleyways gives visitors a flavour of the Middle Ages that is typical of Wernigerode. The famous Wernigerode town hall in particular is a marvellous example of medieval architecture. The town hall is open to locals, holidaymakers and tourists for both guided tours and visits.

The town of Wernigerode lies on the German-Dutch holiday road known as the Orange Route. Other towns on that road: Amsterdam, The Hague, Freudenberg, Wernigerode, Nassau, Potsdam, Schwerin. Enjoy Wernigerode.
