With Summer 2024 set to see the 150th Anniversary of Eastbourne’s hidden gem The Devonshire Park, now world-renowned for hosting the pre-Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, Eastbourne Society trustee, retired architect and Victorian enthusiast Richard Crook gives this presentation to take us on a journey of the evolution of the Park.

Given to members of the Eastbourne Society (www.eastbournesociety.co.uk) at their February 2024 monthly meeting, Richard’s presentation is enlightening and enthralling.

Key to celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Devonshire Park is the project to recreate the Baldequin ‘miniature temple’. The Baldequin was originally built to celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the park.

You can learn about – and hopefully be inspired to support – The Burlington Bower project towards the end of the video. To learn directly of this project see our earlier video here:

It’s mentioned that ‘Reflets dans l’eau’ by Claude Debussy was composed in this very Park, and you can hear this piece, as played by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, in this presentation.
